Pleasantly surprised with the yummy food. Chicken satays are great. Modern decor. Haphazard service. No parking except for paid meter parking. Staff won't allow happy hour specials at discounted price despite being in happy hour time frame. Hoang long is a modern clean space with bamboo accents and a newly renovated area. There is a large patio out front for summer. But it being closed off made the entrance kinda blending in. I was looking for the entrance and walked right by it. Trying to figure out how you get in is a slight challenge. As the door blends in so well and it appears it's just the patio. But that's the entrance. I visited quite early during happy hour at around 6pm. The place was entirely empty except for staff which was slightly disheartening. But I'm sure this place is bustling during the lunch hours. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. Looking through the menu was overwhelming but at least there is something for everyone. We decided on trying the chicken satays with peanut sauce. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. I was walking by and didn't have lunch but saw the sign for half price combos from 2-4PM. It was a little after 2 so I went in to check it out. Inside there was just one table occupied but there is a decent amount of seating for the lunch time crowd. It seemed cleaned. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. For a fast lunch option in the downtown core, this place is really quite excellent! The portions are substantial (be prepared for a huge bowl of food if you're ordering stuff to stay! I must say the caramel chai tea latte I had to accompany my meal was sweet and delicious and I rather liked the fact that they served it in a mason jar mug. Eating lunch at a quick place with real dishes rather than disposables is a nice touch too. Value for money is good and the food is flavourful. I would certainly return. I was perhaps a bit overstuffed after my meal but it carried me through the rest of my workday. I really liked the smile of the employees there while I ordered my food. It was good to get that kind of customer service. I try not to eat out terribly often during my workdays but with an experience like this one, I'm likely to go out of my way to return here again if the experience continues to be as positive as it was during my first visit to this particular location. It was date night, and we had a Groupon to use. Win win! We started with the Mixed Rolls Platter - first of all, let me start by saying you should definitely try this! The green papaya salad that comes with the spring rolls and salad rolls is so good! There's such a mix of flavours, it's awesome. Our entrees were vermicelli bowls, which were again, very tasty. The peanut and sweet chili sauces complimented the ingredients of the bowls nicely - definitely one of the better tasting bowls I've had. We'll definitely be back! I live downtown Jasper and have been wondering about pho places that are close by. I've always walked down Jasper and realizes that they opened a Hoang Long on Jasper. Which is pretty awesome and walking distance from work and home for me! So of course I had to try this one out! The definitely is not your sit down restaurant... Basically because it is located downtown where the hustle and bustle is, there's a process to line up, order your food... get a little buzzer in which they call you up to get your food. So it's fast if you're on the go. No waiters bringing you food to your table here. Which I guess makes it more efficient since its like self serve where you grab your food when your buzzer goes off. There are tables to sit down and quite a alot of room but you still have to grab your buzzer first then a table, if you decide to stay. This place is good for a quick pho fix. read more

Tl;dr: while the atmosphere is nice and roomy, the food is racially eclectic and overpriced and my beef balls tasted strange so I hope I don't get sick. Normally I avoid restaurants that don't specialize but the awning stated that it was a Vietnamese and Thai restaurant and that's why I came in. That being said, after walking in I noticed everything from French desserts to Japanese cuisine. I ordered the pho (beef noodle soup) and I am Vietnamese and Laotian so I can safely say I know the food. They only give ONE meat with the pho for $12, which is downtown over pricing at its finest. Normally, pho should be packed with meat with a good noodle to broth ratio. I also noticed that the beef balls in the soup had a strange funky flavour. I'm hoping I don't get ill! Otherwise, the broth was flavorful and they gave me more than enough noodles to suffice (not sure if that's actually a positive). On the flip side, the atmosphere is beautiful and roomy (good for big groups or meetings) and is probably a good place for those who are not terribly adventurous or who care about the authenticity of a restaurant. They do offer celiac friendly dishes and it seems they have a good variety of drinks. Finally the service was minimal. You order at the desk, and even though I am only one of two people here, he didn't bother to serve me. Whatever though. No service, no need to tip! read more

Was brought here after purchasing a Groupon deal. (and very annoyed regarding their strict Groupon conditions, but that's a story for another day) Maybe it was because the Groupon was expiring soon, but the place was pretty busy on the Wednesday night that we went. Service was horrible; there was only one server working the entire place, and he could not keep up. We waited a long time for our menus... then for our drinks... then for him to take our order... and it was an even longer wait for our food. I was already not impressed that menu items that were no longer offered were still left on the menu, making me wonder if they just aren't offered to discount/Groupon customers. When we got our food, we realized he had made a mistake on our order, but we weren't keen on waiting again for them to redo our meal, so we just sucked it up and ate it anyway. We had noticed the kitchen staff cooking up more rice, so we weren't too surprised to see the meager portions of rice we got. I assume they were not expecting this many customers at dinner on a weekday, but it was jut another item I added to my growing list of "Reasons why I will not return to Hoang Long". The food was just ok, nothing spectacular, although the portion sizes seem kind of small for the price you are paying. My parents found the rice too hard, or as they referred to it as "uncooked". The curry they ordered was thought to be too sweet, and pretty cheap on the meat. The area where you get beansprouts, cutlery, etc was in dire need of replenishing, but because of the lack of available staff, we gave up any hope for beansprouts in our pho. I went to look at the desserts they had on display, and I think they should just stop selling desserts if the demand isn't there. Their lemon tarts had dried out so much, that they had shrunk within their tart shell. Although it's downtown, and there isn't any designated parking for the restaurant, there is free street parking after meter hours. Free wifi available. My recommendation? If you want pho or pad thai, venture into Chinatown and get some real noodle dishes for less than what you'd pay at Hoang Long. Not only will it taste better, at least you won't be hungry again in a couple of hours. read more

My bf and I walked in here, stood there for at least 5-10 minutes waiting to be helped while the gentleman at the counter simply stood there not acknowledging us and not occupied with anything else. There were a couple of workers in the back arranging food and preparing but they did not acknowledge us either. I spent $17 and all I got was a bottle of water and an interaction with a lying thief who fancies himself a business man. This restaurant has the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. This is the first time, I have ever felt strongly enough to even to write a review. Here was my experience: I arrived to have lunch with some friends, I stood in a short line up that seemed to take FOREVER. Why? Because the man at the till moved slower than molasses in January. When I finally got to the front of the line he spent a few more moments fiddling with his cash drawer before looking up. Finally, he notices me. No hello, no smile, no nod, nothing. So I tell this slow moving man I would like a rice plate with brown rice and shrimp and a bottle of water. He then asks me if I would like spring rolls, I say, "oh sure, why not". I notice the spring rolls are a $2 extra. Ok, fine, I don't eat out much, so this is a treat. He gives me an electronic device that notifies me when my food is done, and I go join my friends while I wait. Close to 10 minutes later, my device starts beeping and flashing, so I go collect my food. When I get back to my table and take a bite, I realize I have been given coconut rice and the spring rolls are missing. So I go up to the counter to have my order corrected and he tells me I never asked him for spring rolls. What? Remember, this guy up-sold the damn things to me, so I KNOW I ordered them. I tell him, no and remind him he charged me $2 extra for them. He clearly doesn't believe me, and reluctantly goes to get me the spring rolls, he comes back with them and tries to put them on my plate. I look at him, and say, "but this should be brown rice too". He says, no, you didn't tell me that. I disagree, and he says "well I guess I didn't hear you then", and keeps trying to put the spring rolls on the plate. To which, I say, "no, this isn't what I ordered, you need to give me the brown rice". This argument continues and he is clearly not going to correct my order. So I go back to my table to get the receipt. I come back, and show him "see, you charged me for the spring rolls, which you just said I didn't order, so isn't it possible, that you made a mistake on the rice as well?" He says "well, I dunnno, I guess I didn't hear you, I can give you the spring roles ok?" I say, "no, I would prefer if you just made and gave me what I ordered". He says "no". Just no. He goes on about how I didn't pay extra for the brown rice, and so he can't give it to me. I'm shocked at the nonsense at this point, and just ask for my money back. This is where it get's just down right bizarre. He tells me "no, I can't do that". I'm sure, I've misunderstood, so I clarify: "So, you won't give me what I ordered, and you won't give me my money back either?" He confirms that is correct. Have you ever even heard of such a ridiculous thing? I tell him, he can keep his crappy food and walked away in total shock. This man is a crook. He is ignorant and ridiculously argumentative and can not admit when he is wrong. And he was very, very wrong. So if you enjoy spending an unreasonable amount of money for pedestrian food you didn't ask for or want, go ahead, I wouldn't. Never again. I should also note, one of the folks I was eating with told me, she had just finished arguing with him about the peanut sauce he gave her that was NOT peanut sauce. Alas, he insisted he was right. He was not. It wasn't peanut sauce anymore than I am an astronaut just back from the moon. Save your money and self respect. This guy is a loser. read more

I tried this place because of the Groupon I found & I am soooo happy I did! I haven't been able to stop thinking about the huge variety of dishes that you can have here & I've been back weekly since!! It's a pretty big restaurant located on Jasper Ave & I've seen the long lineups at lunch, so get try to get here before noon! Also open for dinner. They are very fast either way & give you a beeper when you order & it'll go off when your food is ready. The kitchen is open & everyone can see how clean it is. Ice cold pitchers of water available at your leisure, you can help yourself. They also have some cute desserts like macaroons and assortment of drinks including bubble tea! A really beautiful space with bamboo accents. I love the intersecting drink display with colourful sodas from Mexico and other bottled pops and water. I was here on a Saturday afternoon and was the only one there, so it looked really huge and the service was just fine since I had no competition, but I can imagine it fills up on a weekday. The desserts looked really tempting, but I stuck with my plan of having soup. I am familiar with Hoang Long's food from its other locations, and tried the Beef Satay Soup for the first time. I've never had beef satay soup before, so I can honestly say this is the best I have ever had, but it truly was great. The broth was rich and flavourful without being too spicy. There was an abundance of beef, noodles, and cooked carrots, topped with lettuce, red cabbage, and peanuts. Really great flavour. Slightly pricier than other Vietnamese places I frequent, but this place was definitely much fancier. I will be back. read more

I arrived here a bit earlier, just to beat the lunch rush on a Friday afternoon. Upon my arrival, the restaurant was empty, Great! I order a lunch special with soup. This is where it gets bad. I waited nearly 15 minutes for my food and I saw people that come after me get their food before me! So i went up to the employees and asked what was going on? THEY GAVE MY ORDER TO SOMEONE ELSE.. This happens, Im fine. But to rectify the situation, the employee then goes over to the gentleman sitting with my meal, replaces his with the correct order. Takes my order and throws that into a box and gives it to me like i didn't register what just happened.. I saw the entire thing and then i complained. But she didn't speak english. Great. This isn't Vietnam, there are sanitary procedures. I will be following up with AHS on the safety that goes around here. read more

Terrible food & terrible service. I tried this place for the first time today and was extremely disappointed. I ordered their veggies, vegetarian noodles and vegetarian soup. The vegetables were half cold, noodles were barely warm and the soup was lukewarm. The vegetables did not taste fresh and were drenched in sauce and the soup was overly sweet. I also asked for viet coffee and mentioned that I was very cold, the owner brought me iced viet coffee and I told her I was expecting hot coffee - she just said you can get it next time and rudely left (not to mention the coffee was $5 which I could have gotten anywhere else). The food tasted so terrible that I just left it there and had to go buy lunch elsewhere (spent $18 plus tip). I do not recommend going to Hoang Long Fresh Market. read more

This is my new go to place in the city. The food is so fresh and tastes amazing. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable. I would recommend the Vietnamese iced coffee, traditional Bánh mì sandwiches and of course the steaming hot soups. You should really drop by and have a try! read more

We just recently started ordering from Hoang Long through uber eats and of the 5 or so times we've had it, it's been fantastic every time. Super fresh, high quality ingredients (their salad trio is SUBLIME) and their satays and salad rolls are perfect. While our favourite to go to is Pagolac, Hoang Long is our newest favourite order-in option. Would very highly recommend. Get the salad trio. read more
