In September 2014, I messed up my right hamstring during a freak water skiing accident over Labor Day weekend. After several weeks of trying to fix it on my own, I gave up and went to see a physical therapist, Nicole Haas. When I went to see Nicole, I was very frustrated with my situation, depressed with not being able to do anything active, and feeling very vulnerable as I had never experienced a major injury like this. During the initial meeting, Nicole took the time to listen to my frustrations, asked a ton of questions, and really took empathy for me. Most importantly, I felt like she understood me as "a runner/athlete" and could relate to an athlete's fear of being injured/inactive, as she is a stellar athlete herself. At that point, I trusted her and gave her full control of my treatment as we laid out a treatment plan based on my short-term and long-term goals. She coordinated everything from an MRI with a sports specialist (to confirm I tore my hamstring), to regular massages to break out the scar tissue, to evaluating/monitoring my running gait herself. After 3 months of in-office PT sessions twice a week and at-home exercises the other days I was able to be active again. Based on my goals we decided to start back by skiing first. After 3 more months, I was able to run again. In May of 2014 (8 months after severely tearing my hamstring), I was able to join my friends in running the Grand Canyon. Though I couldn't run the full Rim-2-Rim-2-Rim (based more on condition), I was able to do 32 miles of it and didn't have to miss out on a bucket list adventure. I strongly believe that would NOT have happened without Nicole. Since then, I have been able to complete several ultra-marathons and am back to playing tennis/basketball/backpacking/skiing, etc. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Nicole Haas for any runners struggling with an injury and have referred my friends to her. Nicole's thoughtful and straightforward approach helped me remain healthy and injury free for the entirety of 2018. I first met with her in early 2018 complaining of minor injuries and muscle imbalances that had prevented me from completing a 100 mile race in 2017. She was able to immediately identify what was going on and provide me with different solutions on how to treat some muscle imbalances and weaknesses that I had. I saw almost immediate improvement. I also had a running gait analysis which confirmed a few things that I was already aware of. Nicole was great though in teaching me ways to identify proper form and cadence versus incorrect. I appreciated her approach of always being available but not having unnecessary appointments. Dedicating time to athletic and fitness related pursuits has and always will be a priority of mine. Over the years, I've learned the best way to "use your fitness" and continue the grind to further improve is by being injury free. Nicole has become my go to for quick and no nonsense approaches to helping me stay injury free. If I injure something, she figures out both how to improve my symptoms in the short term and helps develop options for continuing workouts without slowing impeding recovering. I injured my IT band hiking Patagonia last year. Went to a local PT who helped somewhat, but I still couldn't return to hiking. I then had an unrelated shin soft tissue injury and the IT band flared big time. My masseuse recommended Nicole who got me in right away, observed my gate and movements, and immediately identified the problem. She explained the mechanics of the injuries, how they affected each other, and taught me exercises that not only healed the injuries but strengthened my leg to prevent similar future injuries. Finally able to get back to hiking, I was a bit apprehensive as I planned a 60 mile, 8,000' aggregate elevation climb in the Wind River. Nicole prepared me, teaching me simple stretches to do during the hike. It was perfect, I've done more backpacking since without any problems and I can't thank Nicole enough. After months of searching for a PT who would help me reach my running goals I found Nicole. Other PTs were happy with "good enough", after foot surgery my new normal was to be running a few miles everyday. That didn't sit well with me. I went to Nicole back in March 2015 for an ongoing shin pain that I thought was a stress fracture. After talking to Nicole and telling her my symptoms, I ended up having MTSS/ posterior tibialis tendonitis. Nicole was able to simplify what was happening with my shin (I don't know anatomy too well!) and show me what exercise will help--along with exercise for long-term running health. After our appointment, Nicole sent me a list of videos, research documents, stretching and strengthening pictures to help with doing PT on my own. Nicole is quick to follow-up and check in which I think is a great quality. I just wish I saw her earlier! Since seeing her, I've learned how important hip strength is and proper running form. Nicole is an expert at what she does. From my intense sciatica and barely walking on our first appointment to being fully functional (and having a home program to continue strengthening) by our fourth appointment, I cannot speak highly enough of Nicole and her expertise and passion for her work. Even with my back seized, she could see through it to pinpoint the issues and get me back up and running. She genuinely cares for her patients; her impressive amount of expertise and knowledge is apparent the second you start working with her. I've worked with Nicole a couple of times, and can't recommend her enough. She's careful, patient, hugely knowledgeable. I worked with Nicole to prepare for a surgical procedure, and because of the prep work she and I did, I was able to come out of surgery and be back in the CrossFit gym within days, back to full workouts in a few short weeks. And recently, bothered with some nagging knee pain, I went to see Nicole again. She gave me some simple exercises to do to take care of the knee, and within a day or two, the pain was gone and hasn't come back. She's a wizard. I absolutely love working with Nicole! I had some IT band issues and she really took the time to analyze the root of my issue and teach me the exercises I needed to get back on track. Nicole really provides the whole picture of care and is realistic about goals for rehab for both the patient and what she can do. I also always felt very mentally supported by her. Dr. Haas (Nicole) helped me recover from nerve issues related to a torn labrum. I am a Crossfitter, and one day started getting nerve pain in my hip. Nicole diagnosed the issue, conservatively treated the issue until more extensive intervention was needed, and then helped me during my recovery. She gave me the tools I needed to recover and to sustain my health. She is an excellent doctor who not only treats her patients, but teaches them so they can prevent future injury. Nicole is a phenomenal therapist! I've seen her on a few occasions, primarily for running ailments but also for a strained shoulder. She is truly remarkable in her ability to diagnose the underlying issue, and provide treatment that remedies it. As a physician myself, I may be a relatively harsh judge when it comes to medical providers. Nicole is outstanding.
