Not only did I enjoy a great coffee and cake here one afternoon in Lübeck, but i also spent way too much money on that oh-so-sweet marzipan. This place is a must-see when exploring the old town of Lübeck. Located right across the street from the Rathaus with a constant stream of people moving in and out, it's hard to miss. I made this my last stop before leaving the city on a Saturday afternoon, and my visit was anything from disappointing. The cafe upstairs is very clean and welcoming. After a Long day of walking the city, it was nice to sit and be waited on. My waiter was very polite and recommended their famous marzipan cake to pair with my cafe creme. It was divine. I inhaled Not only the cake but my beverage (which was very smooth and came with the most adorable little shortbread). It was a very satisfying afternoon snack, and made me wish I had come hungrier so I could've tried more. After enjoying the cafe on the second floor, I moved back to the ground floor to stop by the shop. They have many different products and gift sets, and I ended spending a decent sum on myself and gifts. Like I said before, this place is a great stop when visiting Lübeck. The museum on the third floor is very cool and doesn't not take much time to look through (it's about the history of marzipan). The cafe on the second floor has many options for any occasion, like breakfast, lunch, coffee break, ice cream, etc.... So much marzipan! When in Lübeck, one must visit Niederegger, since the town is known for marzipan. The store is huge and offers all sorts of marzipan goodies. There are 2 cafes in the store, upstairs and downstairs. The upstairs cafe was full service; at the center of it is a circular display counter of all the amazing cakes and other baked goods. We went to the downstairs cafe which was smaller and self service (order at the counter and pick up your order when it's ready). We ordered the Neideregger Nusstorte, which was very yummy with our latte macchiato. The tort is covered in a thin layer of marzipan and the inside was layers of cake, creme and a crispy bottom. We didn't buy anything since we can easily get Niederegger marzipan in Hamburg, but I would definitely would go back to eat at the cafe. read more

After a dinner of Labskaus and Schweinebraten, we decided to try the traditional Niederegger Marzipan Nusstorte, a marzipan nut tart. Though mostly creme with small pieces of nuts, the tart is covered in a layer of marzipan with a crumbly crust. It was pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but worth trying, as this is regarded as the best marzipan in Germany... MAYBE THE WOLRD! I also got the Niederegger Marzipan Cappuccino, which I thought was delicious, but my wife's plain Cappuccino was way too milky and not so great. Also copped some marzipan nibbles on the way out. If you're in Lübeck and you don't come here for a slice of Marzipan Nusstorte, I feel that's a fail. read more

After browsing all the marzipan creations on the ground floor, I went upstairs to the cafe, which is much larger and was a lot less busy than the downstairs sitting area. I had the classic Marzipan Torte, which has a marzipan topping and a creamy nut filling. It was good, but didn't taste enough like marzipan for a fan like me (although it might be perfect for someone who doesn't love marzipan that much). I had marzipan milk coffee with it, and found it a bit disappointing... just milk coffee with almond flavoring. Service was efficient and friendly enough. Be sure to go on to the top floor to see the small marzipan museum. The highlight for me were the life-size historic figures made of marzipan. I also bought some Marzipan Weissbrot (white bread), which is just a loaf of plain marzipan with no chocolate covering. Super rich and delicious, and relatively inexpensive at 5.30 euros for a medium-sized loaf. read more

In my opinion niederegger use to be the best marzipan available in the united states, but recently they changed their recipe and now their marzipan contains new ingredients... one being artificial rose water. No real artisan gourmet company would add anything artificial to their products. After the I read the new ingredients list I was shocked and I didn't want to buy it anymore, but I did anyway just to check and see if the flavor was the same... I doubted it would be. I purchased the dark chocolate marzipan bar and the flavor was different and bad compared to how good it used to be. The marzipan had very little almond flavor and aroma. It had an almost burnt sugar aftertaste. The chocolate doesn't taste the same either. Also, there is less marzipan in the bar now. I wonder if this recipe change is only for marzipan sold in the united states. I asked them, but they avoided the question. This is very sad to me as I loved their marzipan, but I will never buy it again and will just make my own from now on. read more

The shop itself has quite a long history and it's location just made it great place to hang around with friends or family. The view from the shop is also really nice. Nice place to have a break. The shopping street just next by, after a cake or two, just go to do some shopping. Well, because of popularity of this place. During oir visited, even we got a table for ourselves, it took really long time to get service. And the service wasn't perticularly nice. That's the part that we all didn't like from this place. I also tried there their special marzipan milk coffee, it was a bit too sweet for me as a coffee. And let's say I have different expectation when I made the order. The Homeland of Marzipan.. this is where it's made people! This is the flagship store where you get it all and there is a cafe upstairs. I have to admit the cafe is pricy but it's SO worth it. Nusstorte (100% true marzipan cake) with a cup of coffee and you're set. I hate imitation marzipan - I can tell when someone gives me the fake almond paste... gross! It's this stuff or the highway for me :) They have opened a patio setting in the Rathaus square in the summer to accomidate the people that want to soak in the rays. I had a version in my head of what marzipan was from the faces of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore when their parents bring them marzipan from cloistered nuns... and it wasn't good. Then there was a dark-chocolate coated marzipan bite on the pillow in my hotel in Lübeck, and I realized that it's actually quite good when done by Niederegger. I stopped into this shop twice to get souvenirs. I walked by the windows to admire the scenes and figures crafted in marzipan as well. It was Christmas market season, so everything was festive and crowded. The staff was friendly and helpful, keeping the lines moving, keeping the shelves stocked, and wrapping packages for presents at the register. If you want something made out of marzipan and you can't find it here, then you really don't need it. They've also got a cafe with amazing cakes and pastries. read more

Insanely good, the best Marzipan in the World. The selection of cakes in the Café is amazing, as are their taste...especially the Nusstorte! We tried the Marzipan flavored coffee which was good, but I think I'll stick to regular coffee in the future. The service in the beyond crowded café was efficient though rushed, how they can remain sane with all those masses of people demanding immediate Marzipan satisfaction is beyond me. I used to think i hated marzipan. Many times that ive had lousy examples of them. Not until the last few years have i tried more artisan, good products. When my wife and I were dating and she said she was from Lübeck, I knew nothing about it other than tales of the Hanseatic League from high school history. Then we went there to visit her parents, and I went to Niederegger. Like Paul on the road to Damascus, my eyes were opened (but to marzipan, not God, just to be clear). It was there that she introduced me to the most delicious thing made by humans: nusstorte. A base layer of moist cake topped with a delicious whipped cream, wrapped in a layer of Niederegger's wonderful marzipan. Then, as we were planning our wedding, my wife told me that nusstorte is traditional for wedding cakes in Lübeck. I was sold-- we made one whole layer a nusstorte. In addition to marzipan and nusstorte, Niederegger makes a variety of equally tempting desserts. Go to the cafe on the second floor and you can choose what you want by pointing to it in their giant display case of cake (could there be a better kind of display case???). Then head to the shop and pick up some delicious candy to take with you. Some of the prices are a bit high, but remember, this is some of the highest quality marzipan you can buy anywhere. You get what you pay for. Niederegger is synonymous with Lübeck. Do not go to this wonderful city without stopping here. read more

This is another world institution. If you come to Luebeck, it would be churlish not to come here. Niederegger makes the world's finest marzipan and inside you can have it in any shape your heart desires...old fashioned fruit and veg, a German good-luck pig, animals...you name it, at some stage they've made it. If your tastes are still more sophisticated, please treat yourself to one of the (expensive) boxes of marzipan chocolates. They are exquisite. The tiles on the wall are worth looking at...they are very old and very fine. It's a memory I've kept since childhood, so it must be special :) read more

Not only is Niederegger's original downtown Lübeck location the central temple of Marzipan in the world, but its café does serve some seriously good cakes - even if you are less into Marzipan. (Unfortunately they started to marzipan-flavour coffee, ice cream, waffles etc. too, but those you should probably avoid.) The rest - coffees, hot chocolates, cakes and tarts is seriously good, light, homemade. And "Nuss Torte" is the original Marzipan cake. Which you should try once in your life. BEWARE: RACIST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! After I complained about a racist incident I witnessed at their cafe and didn't even get a response or acknowledgment from Niederegger, I hope that this review will change your decision about going to this cafe. I'm a Canadian expat who had been going to Niederegger since 2003. The service was never great (unless you look monied, they don't serve you with respect) and even though they get a lot of international customers, the servers nor salespeople in the store don't speak ANY English. Sometime last year while I was waiting in line, there was a spanish customer who could not speak German who was making an extensive order. Since the Niederegger lady behind the counter couldn't understand her well, she and a fellow German customer started making fun of her. They made fun of her in German in front of the entire store, thinking it was okay since the customer couldn't understand a word they were saying. I DID, however and complained immediately. Instead of an apology, the Niederegger salesperson said I was a spoil sport. If you think it's NOT okay to make fun of non-German speaking customers in public (especially when they have no idea that they are being made fun of), then don't go to this cafe. They are "legendary" because they are the oldest, but nowadays, there are better cafes in Lübeck where you can spend your money. read more

a trip to the niederegger café is an absolute must if you love marzipan as much as i do. the café itself is cute & has an elegant, somewhat retro vibe. the marzipan coffee was to die for & the slice of cake i had was decadent, yet light & creamy, decked out with a chocolate shell, marzipan crust, & a candied walnut. my generously sized cup of coffee was €3,90 & a slice of cake will set you back about €3,50. a bit pricy but worth it! read more

Went here twice, first time for afternoon coffee and cake and than again for a long breakfast. The Marzipan Torte I had was to die for, and the lavish breakfast was served with a smile. I sat right at the window in the cafe and had the best view of the town hall. Don't forget to take Marzipan back home with you, there is a Marzipan supermarket downstairs. Heaven. read more
