There are signs all over the place reminding you that if you break something you buy it....that there are cameras watching...and not to touch this or that. It's not the most welcoming environment-I get the feeling that I'm being watched suspiciously from the moment I enter the door. Plus, the giant pictures of previous shoplifters posted up on the wall make me think they have a history of unsavory folks. That's too bad, ruins it for the rest of us.

I last visited Benedict's 10 years ago when the entrance way was decorated with taxidermy and the fresh veggie and prepared food offerings were slim. On this occasion I went in just hoping for some canned soup and tuna, and I was very pleasantly surprised by their renovations and much updated offerings! I especially loved their fresh vegetable and fruit section which also had prepared salads and fruit cups. I was able to stock up on single-serving size items that were fresh (and not covered in plastic!), and was also impressed by the variety of artisanal and organic products throughout the market. What a transformation! I will definitely give Benedict's more business on future trips!
