Sometimes you'll get some courtesy bar snacks with your drink, sometimes not. You can also grab a beer from the back and get the top knocked off - only paying take-away price for the privilege. The sort of place where you're actually not sure if they're licensed to serve you there, but you ask no questions because you're glad that they do!

Wine is mostly at the moderate to well price end- you can find most stock ranging between $20-40, and then of course you have your other higher and lower price brackets. What i can strongly suggest, after personal years in the hospitality trade, years of buying and tasting wine, is that you want to go with the aforementioned $20- $40 pricing range. Yes, you spent a little more money, but the qaulity is far superior, and of course, this will reflect in the product itself. You can knock someone's or even your own socks off with just about any bottle in this store as such, I would highly recommend some tight fitting socks! Pay attention all, this is wine, this is good wine, this is where it's at. Fresh, clean, spacious and modern layout, with products that excel. Not in the mood for wine? You will be! But if absconding from such excellent alcoholic grape products, they have here a great range of non-commercial (i can buy that anywhere) ciders, such as the Harcourt apple and pear ciders in that cute labels and packaging. Great boutique beers that you mostly can't find anywhere else; and again, this stuff is better drinking qaulity. Finally, Melbourne wine store is located in that cool little pocket, of St Kilda Road near Royce hotel, Cafe Vue and other rad businesses. This is on the outbound side, between Domain and Toorak roads, in that funny little patch of greatness, "the only part of st Kilda road that isn't daggy, dated, boring, run of the mill, nothing special, bland, boring, insipid and really crappy."

What I love about it is the availability of Victorian made products with a smattering of interesting overseas offerings. And their table wine is pretty reasonable too. It's always a pleasure talking to the staff as we learn something new each time. Sometimes I feel as though we are following their brew adventures as they hunt down new stock. The pride in and knowledge of their stock makes me feel that Dave, the guy who runs it, is more of a curator than a shopkeeper. There are regular tastings and at Christmas they made up some microbrew mixed six packs so we could introduce these lovely drops to others. Awesome. Now, if only their stall was a bit bigger ;)

The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable about all things hoppy and boozy - they'll point you in the direction of something new and interesting and send you on your merry way with a mixed selection of things to try. One of the girls who works here, Lucy, applies a similar language to beer as one would with wine and it's an absolute treat to have her serve you if you want to geek out. On my most recent visit I went home with three new ciders - an interesting cloudy pear version (Perry), a regular clear apple cider from the Adelaide Hills and a little Victorian number which all went down a treat at an outdoor BBQ.
