Quaint and simple craft coffee bar in one of the coolest parts of the Boston area. I'm lucky to live a few minute's walk from Nine Bar and I do find myself here pretty often. There are a number of other great coffee shops in walking distance, but when I'm looking for a quick in-and-out coffee stop, this is where I always gravitate. When it comes to my order, I'm a creature of habit and I usually find myself walking out with a nitro cold brew. Their regular iced coffee is also fantastic. I'm admittedly a bit of a coffee snob, so it is a high compliment for me to say I would never dream of adding any kind of creamer or sweetener to the coffee here. The inside is pretty tiny, so don't expect to sit and hang unless you get really lucky. The menu is also fairly minimal, but the craftsmanship and level of detail in everything they do here is much higher than standard, so coffee lovers won't have an issue finding something they're happy with. They also have a short but overall solid tea selection if you find yourself here with a non-coffee drinker. I have never had food here, but they have a moderately-sized selection of pastries and based on visual assessment alone, everything I have seen looks quality. If you're used to upscale, artisanal espresso bars, this is the place for you. read more

This is the place I miss the most after moving away from Davis Square. They make the platonic ideal of a cortado. Always so smooth, so bright and rich in flavor, served piping hot in a whisky glass with a perfect leaf. I'd come several times a week during graduate school for it. Now that I'm in the Midwest, I have to arm wrestle with baristas ("just a little more milk, no a little less") to get a shadow of the thing. read more

Not a bad place to stop in for coffee while perusing Davis Square. I used Yelp to locate the nearest coffee place that wasn't Starbucks, and came up with Nine Bar Expresso. Excellent customer service, pretty good coffee & snacks, as well as a decent amount of outdoor seating. The venue is setup to cater to more of the crowd that gets coffee to go. This was evident in seeing the limited amount of interior seating (about 5-6 chairs), plus a smaller bar area that is without chairs. The barista indicated that there isn't any WiFi here, so you'll have to suck it up and use a substitute if you think that you'll get any online work done here. I'm certain that this is by design in order to keep patrons steadily moving in & out of the coffee shop without getting too comfortable. Not a bad place when in Davis Square. read more

We stayed in Cambridge for a week close to Davis Square and found this amazing gem right across the T. The coffee and pastries are amazing and the place is very cozy inside with some outdoor seating as well. I like the nitro cold brew and appreciate that they use and sell Gracenote coffee. The morning glory muffin and bread are tasty, and the lemon pound cake is very nice and moist. I wish there was a coffee shop like this close to home back in the bay area. There's also a star rewards program so after 5 visits, you can get $1 off. Nice perk! The only weird thing to me is that soy milk is cheaper than almond milk. Why not charge the same price? It can't be that much of a difference... and providing both options at the same price would help those of us who can't have milk feel better. What if someone is allergic to both soy and regular milk? Then they have to pay a small premium for almond milk? Seems weird. read more

Nine Bar is an excellent, small espresso bar. They also have a nice selection of teas, cold brew, and hot drip coffee. There's a good selection of baked goods, but the espresso - the focus - is delicious and the space is attractive and understated. Bagels with cream cheese come in several combinations, and the presentation of the food is better than any of the neighborhood cafes. There are more advanced breakfast/snack options - whipped ricotta toast, avocado toast, and yogurt parfaits. The breakfast sandwich - tomato, avocado, cheese, brioche and, essentially, a mini omelet - is amazing. The in-house pastries are beautiful and creative. The staff is friendly and helpful. Lots of natural light, distressed wood, and charm is packed into a tight space. I stop here quite often. read more

Small storefront with lots of natural light. The pastries looked delicious but I was searching for caffeine only. I ordered a shot on ice--they pull two shots at once so that's what I got instead. My husband chose a iced americano. Since I'm used to just one shot on ice with half and half, it was a bit too strong for me (my problem, not theirs). I ended up switching with my husband and drank some of his iced americano--good flavor and not bitter. There were a few tables outside to sit but this is not a place to come work unless you like feeling squished in. No idea why this place is so highly rated. To start with, it's very small and there's extremely limited seating. Oh, and it doesn't help that the staff seem to hate their lives... But you go to a coffee place for good coffee, right? Well, the coffee is horrible. Granted, this is a subjective thing and I prefer the coffee at Diesel cafe, which uses Itelligentsia coffee; it blows this stuff out of the water. The espresso is undrinkable and the cappuccino had a weak foam that quickly dissipated into a milky mess which quickly overpowered any remaining coffee flavor. God, it make me miss Italy...sigh Personally I'd walk to 3 Little Figs up on Highland or go to Diesel before I'd drink this stuff again. read more

Located a stone's throw from the center of Davis Square and across the street from the entry to the subway station, this quaint coffee shop didn't disappoint. I was torn about which breakfast item to order from their bevy of baked goods (see photo), so I went "mainstream" and got what appeared to be a housemade blueberry muffin with crumblies on top (see photo). It was moist and delicious. What did I see out to the corner of my eye but a new form of chocolate being used for my drink - instead of powder or syrup a scoop of semi-solid chocolate was used. While many take foam art for granted, I appreciated that the barista made a heart in the froth (see photo). So why only a four-star rating if I seemed to have loved everything about this place? Coffee strength, I would've had to get an extra shot of espresso in my cafe mocha to elevate it to five-star status. read more

The food is good; the coffee top notch. Why the low rating? I went in this afternoon and attempted to order the ricotta jam toast. The blond guy with glasses behind the counter refused to place my order. There was nothing on the menu that said this was only available in the morning. He said I could have a bagel. I asked if I could get the ricotta jam spread on the bagel. He refused. If you only offer that before noon, that's fine--you need to put that on the menus. Otherwise, you look like one of your employees has an attitude problem and refuses to do the work. read more

Limited seating and hours (at least for any big coffee shoppers), but the coffee is awesome! I really like both their iced and hot lattes, those are definitely my go-to. They have some delicious looking pastries that I've yet to try, so they do have food if you're hungry. No public bathroom or WiFi, but there are outlets and outdoor tables. It's modern but comfy, I sometimes spend hours here working on my laptop. This is my favorite coffee spot not only in Davis Square, but the whole Cambridge / Somerville scene, don't hesitate to swing by if you're in the area! The coffee here is great. It's one of the best spots in the area to get a really nice espresso drink. However, EVERYTIME I get a bagel the thing is burnt. Especially with take-out only, it's really frustrating to pay like $4 for a bagel with cream cheese only to get home to find it burnt. Please lower the setting on your toaster! read more

I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and a iced coffee. The lid on the coffee was defective and lead to spilling down my jacket, not once but with two different lids. Also I got back to my car and noticed the bagel was burned, blackened, under the cream cheese? They not only had to have notice after it came out of the toaster but covered it up with cream cheese. read more

I wanted to try a new coffee place and yelped in the area. I found this a good rated one. I had cappuccino ($4) and ginger apricot scone (~$3). Cappuccino had good bitterness and intensity. It was really good. The scone was also perfect. Ginger was not strong and apricot was unexpectedly fit with scone. There are not many seats, but there is a bar section where you can have coffee with standing. It reminded me of coffee bars in Italy. I like that style. I will definitely come back here. read more

This is THE spot to get classic, good coffee in Davis Square: nitro cold brew, every variation of espresso beverages, dozens of teas, rotating drip coffee beans, more types of coffee I can't think of right now.... They don't do anything TOO crazy (a la iced matcha tea at Diesel around the corner) but for coffee drinker staples, Nine Bar is my go-to. That said, if you're looking for food with your drink I'd suggest elsewhere. They have a pretty small menu and it's breakfast only and isn't served in the afternoons. They have a selection of pastries as well, but the food is definitely an afterthought. This place is about caffeine. It's a very small little shop, but they have some seating inside as well as a few small tables on the sidewalk. I love that they have real coffee mugs if you're sticking around. I hate meeting someone for a coffee at Starbucks and drinking out of cardboard (if you're within a mile of an independent coffee shop, what are you doing at Starbucks anyways?!!). Prices aren't cheap but are on par with other Davis area establishments, if more costly then elsewhere in Somerville. Considering they're directly across the street from the Davis T entrance (one of them at least), the price reflects the extremely convenient location. $4 for a cappuccino isn't unreasonable, and they're not small either. They also have a rewards program that is connected to your phone number (no card to carry around) to earn free drinks. read more

Only downside is that the space is tiny so if I wanted to sit down with my cup of coffee, the two or three booth chairs are taken over by people studying/hogging for hours. Love this place! Great location directly across form the Holland Street T station and bike path. The sidewalk tables are a plus in the summer, perfect for people watching. It's a small spot inside and can get a line at commuting time. The staff is always very helpful and friendly. I judge coffee establishments based on Mocha quality. They excel at both hot and iced. The classic hot mocha has a slight bitter cocoa taste complimenting the expresso and perfectly foamed milk. The iced version some how it ends up with chocolaty flakes that melt in as you drink. So good. They feature great pastries (seem like iggy's and I've seen a sign for Danish Pasty shop featured items), bagels, and on weekends breakfast sandwiches. They also have a great tea selection and my coworkers love their cold brew. Glad to have Nine Bar in the Davis Square neighborhood! read more

Disclaimer: this review may be coloured by this being my first meal and coffee after a red eye in which I slept 2 hours tops. But the cortado I got here was excellent, and the ricotta jam toast was incredible!! Perfect balance of ricotta and jam and the jam was not too sweet. Nice hearty bread too. After 3 visits it has become my favorite coffee shop in the area. I wasn't expecting much from a quick morning bite, yet their breakfast food never failed to surprise me. Both the ricotta toast and the yogurt parfait are freshly served with a delicate and fine texture which far exceeded my expectations. I only wished they have a bigger food menu. Updates: - dont like the granola that comes with the yogurt cuz its too dry and the their textures dont rly go well tgt. but luckily they are separate in the container - tried the avocado toast which was decent but not as good as ricotta imo + the staff was rly nice and friendly and i love the atmosphere and location Overall still a great place for breakfast! read more

It is small and quaint, with only about 5 seats and a standing bar. If it is anything like Simon's in Porter, the scones (Lemon ginger @!@) and sandwiches will be great as well. Cold brew - I think a little more bitter than your average cold brew, but it was still excellent. Also had an iced honey (chai? vanilla?) latte drink which was good, but nothing I would think about in my free time. read more

On the outside, it looks like a pretentious, overpriced, all white establishment that stinks of bad coffee, cultural appropriation and hipsterdom. HOWEVER, when you go in - you feel like people actually like you. Like, they perk up and talk to you. None of this silent but unaffected treatment that you encounter in these type of "trendy" places. If they were to remake a cheers type of tv show, this is where you would film it (but please no, don't.). Great service. And you know that is more important than the product to me. If you chilling with bad company but have great food, that's still a bad experience. But the coffee taste really good. Right amount of bitterness and so good. Only con is that there is limited seating, but for the area, I think that's a good thing - too many of us (students) around and we would eventually ruin the service. read more

I love living in Davis Square, but I've had trouble finding cafes and eateries that provide consistent excellence in what they're selling and in attitude while they're selling it. This spot is so new and already at the top of my list! I've been here 4 times in the past few weeks. Coffee, latte, pastry, sandwich. They've gotten it right every time- everything has tasted delicious. Service has been quick. Servers are F-R-I-E-N-D-L-Y. Sometimes you almost forget that that's part of the whole experience... these folks are smiley, conversational but not chatty, and helpful. I'm hooked. Very strong start for this place. Great place! It's awesome to have another option for coffee in Davis, and they're doing a great job. Delicious coffee, made with care, with friendly service and a bright, cozy atmosphere. They have that new fangled nitro-push cold brew on tap, and it's smooth and tasty, and the pastries are also delicious, made by the Danish Pastry House up in Medford as of this writing. My only complaint is that their drip coffee is so fresh and moderately acidic, that, depending on the day and the brew and the state of the cream, it can actually curdle the cream in the coffee. Harmless, but a little annoying--the coffee is great anyway, so I recommend you just drink it black. Overall, great place to start your day. read more

I sometimes leave for work early specifically so I can stop in here, 'cause Nine Bar makes a really frickin' good latte. They use Gracenote beans, which definitely helps, but that's only half the battle. Their staff are nice, and there's one guy in particular who always looks so serene it's like he's found coffee nirvana. Their pastries and snacks are also good; the apple almond square is my fave. It's kinda greasy, but it's so tasty I don't even care. They're not up their own asses about their coffee, either. Like, it's one of those upscale coffee places for sure, but nobody's looking down their nose at you. read more
