The Hungry Duck - Lovely waitress

I was having trouble choosing as the waitress brought the breakfast AND the lunch menus so was torn between things like English breakfast and eggs benny, or the burgers and salads etc. In the end I asked the waitress and she recommended the fish finger sandwich if I was looking for something filling. It was incredible- the fish was incredibly fresh from the market and battered. The bun was light, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It came with a potato salad and a side salad with Dijon mustard dressing. Great choice and just what I needed. It cost me £11.30 for that and a chamomile tea, not particularly cheap but worth it. The service was excellent and the girl was very chatty as this is such a small community. In the evenings this place turns into more of a fine dining restaurant- I've seen pictures on the Internet and the food looks really nice so I'll have to come back for a meal sometime. The interior is quite simple cafe style with wooden tables, it doesn't hold that many so I can imagine it would get pretty full! It was certainly filling up when I left at lunchtime.

With the breakfast you could have a choice of eggs to how you like - I went for classic fried eggs. My breakfast was cooked to perfection and my favourite part was their homemade spicy baked beans. There was also two slices of generously buttered doorstop toast to mop up all the sauces too! We also ordered a French toast which was served with bacon and poached eggs too! We were impressed with the teas and coffees too. The interior was clean, modern and well lit. Definitely a lovely spot for weekend brunch or tea and cake in the afternoons!

A tesco value Miller and Carter, but hugely over priced I…read morethought we would give the Firepit a second try, after trying it on Fathers day and being pretty disappointed From first setting foot in this restaurant, we were aquatinted with a barrage of flies. As we sat down, we made our choices, and was expecting to be served, so we could order drinks/starters. But even though there were less than 3 tables in service, I had to go and find a server so I could order our drinks and meals. This could be forgiven if it were busy, but it was not, and there were plenty of staff just gazing into the void. When I managed to collar someone to make the order, we had to wait an extended length of time, for the over priced, poorly cooked food. When the mains arrived, probably 40 mins after ordering, both the burger, and the steak were EXTREMELY salty, and zero flavour depth. It was so salty, my mouth is still dry and burning as I write this review. You would normally expect, to be asked how the food is, during your meal. And genuinely wanting feedback, to add to value added work, to keep the business continually improving. But in the Firepit, it seems, nobody cares how your food is. We spent the whole meal, batting away flies, and choking on enough salt, to put us in perpetual hypertensive crisis. I mentioned to 2 staff members, how terrible the experience was, but nothing was mentioned to management, and to be quite honest, they didn't seem like they cared. In the restaurant business, you have to be monitoring customer experience closely, as you're only as good as your last weeks customers, so if this isn't actioned upon, I can see this space up for rent, very soon. At the Fire Pit, you pay city premiums, for terrible service/food/experience. This really is a pretentious venue, with zero quality control, or customer service. Experience is everything, and I can say wholeheartedly, they have missed the mark. Make sure you get the steak on a stone the first time. The sharer stone is great for couples. All the staff are great and the bar upstairs is really relaxed. Even the starters are great and the puddings make for a great way to end the night. Fairly expensive so go for a special occasion but you will not be disappointed. With the steak, the teriyaki dip is divine - definitely a must. Make sure you book a table and go hungry!

TL;DR - Nice food, but a slightly sterile venue…read more We came here for a birthday meal on a windswept and rainy night. Finding the venue is pretty challenging in the dark, as you have to drive down very narrow and bumpy unlit lanes. We had an email from the restaurant beforehand advising us that one of the two roads on the approach were flooded, which was useful advice to know in advance! The building itself is a mixture of old and new - built in the 90s, but from local stone it gives the impression of a barn conversion. The interior is warm and welcoming, but clean and modern. We were greeted at the bar and quickly seated at our table in the dining room. I understand that the huge windows at the end of the room offer amazing views, but as it was dark when we were there we were unable to see this. The menu is what you'd probably describe as British classics. I had black pudding and chorizo to start which was nice, but the black pudding wasn't the tastiest I've ever had. Mark had deep friend prawns and calamari which he enjoyed. For our mains, Mark had a steak and onion pie and I went for the steak pudding. Both were nice, but I couldn't help but feel that the presentation of the pudding was underwhelming. It was just slapped on the plate with a sea of mushy peas and chips. And the chips themselves were fine - nice, but nothing to write home about. Dessert was amazing though - I had sticky date pudding which was out of this world, and Mark had the waffles and ice cream which was enormous! This was a really nice way to round out the meal. Overall we enjoyed the meal, but after having heard people rave about this place I came away a little underwhelmed. The dining room is nice but just feels a little soulless - a big empty space with tables and chairs put in it. It didn't help that the bad weather had put a lot of people off attending - as such the enormous dining room felt pretty empty.

Looking for somewhere special for our wedding anniversary meal, I hadn't heard of The Fishermans…read moreRetreat in Bury, but when it was recommended I gave it a look online and definitely liked the sound of it. Despite the name, it isn't a seafood restaurant but a restaurant showing off British quality cuisine, nestled in the rolling hills of Ramsbottom, where you keep thinking you're getting lost until you see the occasional sign popping out of the bushes telling you that you're nearly there. As you park up, you see the wonderful surroundings of the place and hear the rush of a nearby strong stream. Very pleasant. You walk into the front doors and the first thing you see is a nice bit of provenance, showing the construction of the restaurant in 1992. I love things like this, it's nice to see people being proud of something they've put their passion into. You then pass by a large whisky bottle shop. Surprising, but a nice touch of class! Greeted at the bar, we give our names as we made a reservation and we are taken through to the next room, which is a real dramatic first impression. You walk though a small arch and into an extremely large room with a gigantic window at the far end, looking out onto the rolling moors. It's definitely a "wow" moment. The room is quite modern and a touch on the stark side, but the view makes up for it. The furniture is large chunky modern wood, and generously seated so everyone has room. We're seated and given our menu along with the day's specials. We order a couple of Diet Pepsi's, and have a nosy at the menu. The drinks take a while to appear, but I'm happy to say that two different members of staff came to update us about the situation (a problem with the pump), and gave us some water in the meantime. Service like this is what makes a potentially poor situation well handled and happily received. We start by ordering the garlic bread, described as oven baked focaccia brushed with garlic butter and served with aged balsamic and duo of pesto. I'll get this part out of the way because this was the only underwhelming part of the experience. When it came out we were quite surprised at how small the garlic bread was considering it was listed as "to share" and was £8.00, and despite being a nice piece of bread, we couldn't actually taste much garlic or seasoning at all, which was a shame. However the pesto and balsamic worked perfectly with it and saved it a little. For our mains, I ordered the beef wellington. I've never had beef wellington in a restaurant before and it seemed the perfect "special" choice. My partner ordered the steak and mushroom pie. Both arrived very pleasantly presented. The quality here was superb. The pie was bursting with flavour, and the pastry was perfect. The chips were also just as crunchy and satisfying as you'd hope! The beef wellington was stunning. I was asked if I wanted it pink or cooked through... it's nice to be asked but if you're ordering beef wellington cooked through you might as well order a burger. The beef was pink and juicy, the mushrooms superbly flavourful, and although the pastry was a touch soft, it was still delicious. The part I actually enjoyed most however was the dauphinois potatoes, which was a brick of beautifully flavoured and seasoned layers. I enjoyed every last mouthful of it, and the dish as a whole was really excellent! We were really impressed by the food, and so just had to order dessert! My partner opted for the sticky date pudding, and I opoted for the Baileys and white chocolate cheesecake, which they kindly allowed me to substitute chocolate ice cream for their cookies and cream ice cream as I'm not a big fan of chocolate ice cream. Both came nicely presented but the cheesecake really did look special! The date pudding was rich and comforting, and the perfect way to round off the meal. The cheesecake was deceptively sized! It looked little but was a big portion, and was superbly creamy and tasty indeed, but the cookies and cream ice cream was actually superb, I really enjoyed it and could easily just have got three scoops of that! The one detail I found odd with the venue was that the ladies toilets were a door just off the main room, but the gents are actually out of the room, through the bar, down a corridor, and by the front door... very odd! More than once we saw blokes going to what they assumed was the gents toilet in the next door along, only to wander into a cloakroom and be quickly chased by a member of staff directing them the right way. The service is friendly and professional, but we did on occasion find it hard to get the attention of some of the staff, despite there being quite a few around, but when we did, they were happy to help and very professional. Will definitely return!
