One of two NK locations, which stands for Nordiska Kompaniet - NK is a huge, grand, old department store in the centre of Stockholm - it opened in 1902, 38 years after the only other NK store which is also in Sweden, in Gothenburg. The store has so many areas specialising in different things from food to beauty - many of which have their own names, making a mini shopping mall with different parts of the store having their own Yelp listings - it would have been nice to see a technology section here similar to modern department stores, however. The store is step-free, apart from the grand main entrance which has steps going both up and down. This store is even worth visiting just for the grand nature and beautiful architecture which is remarkable and surely stands out in its' location, close to tram/bus services and T-Centralian. There wasn't a great deal of staff around the floor, other than those who might work for the individual stands within NK rather than the mall its-self and the store can be a little difficult to navigate at times due to its size- surprising for a high-end department store that employs 1200+. A remarkable, impressive department store just to walk around for the look and feel of the store alone - bare in mind it is pretty high-end and affluent, like a Swedish Selfridges. 4* read more

There's nothing quite like the NK (Nordiska Kompaniet) in the US anymore. The NK is to Sweden what Stockmann is to Finland, sitting self-confidently at the top of the national retail market. The NK has top local and international brands. With a selection unrivaled in Sweden and impeccable customer service, the store attracts a decidedly upper-scale urban local segment. It claims 12M visitors p.a., including the random foreign business traveler like me. Joseph Sachs' founding vision was to make NK 'commercial and cultural theater.' The vibe at the NK is what I imagine Saks was like in '50s New York. Let's call it earnest coolness. There's more of an emphasis on quality workmanship and active curation of wearable fashion (rather than couture) brands like Peak Performance, Ralph Lauren and Gant. Ok, I like this Swedish department store for totally different reasons than you will, Yelpers. * * * The Yelp Review For Everybody Else. One. This is a beautiful place. The store was built in 1915 by a Swedish art nouveau architect and he did a wonderful job. The store is build around a four story atrium with galleries on all four sides with wrought iron balconies. There are all sorts of places to sit in those galleries where you can look down on the courtyard below. We spent much of our afternoon doing just that. Two. One third of the floor space of NK is given over to restaurants and cafes. You are never more than ten yards away from something lovely to eat and drink. (Yeah, my barista who couldn't have been more than nineteen years old put old milk into my otherwise well made latte. However, the mint cookie that came with it was delightful. I am writing off the old milk as a fluke.) Three. NK is alive and thriving - unlike American downtown department stores. People pour into NK and are buying things in every department. Visiting Macy's or Marshall Fields can feel like visiting your grandmother in the nursing home. I suspect having a local government that makes things hard on competitors like Walmart has much to do with the vigor of Stockholm downtown department stores. * * * Now, heh heh, the Yelp Review for Me. Samuel C. is a classical music fiend. Better yet, he likes all the niches of classical music including many forms that are disdained by American classical music lovers. The classical music niche that is dying the fastest in the U.S. is leider and art songs. One of the areas of the world whose classical music is generally disdained in the U.S. is Scandinavia. Sweden distinguished itself both in art song and producing amazing singers for the operatic and lieder repertoires. In America, it is hard to find an art song recital, or find lieder cds that are not Schubert or Wolf. NK's book and music department has the best selection of classical cd's in Stockholm and arguably in Sweden. It is very strong on all classical genres including massive selections of two good budget labels, Naxos and Brilliant, and very strong coverage on a variety of labels of every composer you can think of. They are excellent on Swedish composers - composers whose work you can hardly find anywhere else. Better yet - they are AMAZINGLY strong on all forms of vocal classical music: opera, choral and art song alike. They have huge selections for every famous opera or lieder singer you can think of, and many you have never heard of. They have a deep stock of recordings of the best choirs from all over the world, with Sweden well represented in the pack. They have tons of repertoire I have never seen anywhere else ... and I have shopped in classical music stores all over Europe including ones that promote the local national tradition. (It does not hurt that they also have good selections of the Swedish traditional folk songs and folk fiddling. These were the musical roots that led to the Swedish classical music tradition in the first place.) The wife and I left the store with bags full of goodies. We also had huge grins on our faces as we went home to count up the swag. * * * You, fellow Yelper, may not be as excited about Swedish art songs as we are. But they have a lot of different departments at NK. One of those departments may have something that appeals to your secret id as well. And if you can't find anything you like, no big deal. Also has a cafe, grocery store, wine/cheese bar, chocolate/tea/cigar speciality shops, and a restaurant. Spacious, classic, high end department store in a central location. Kind of like a Swedish Selfridges. Clothes, home decor, accessories, cafe, restaurant etc across multiple floors. Known for its Christmas window displays. You can also meet Santa here, but the fact that he is dressed in all white clothing without the slightest hint of red color is just wrong. NK which stands for *Nordiska Kompaniet' is the classical large luxurious department store. They offer high quality (or at least well-know brands) products but prices are seldom low. I do however often come here since they have many parts of the store I do like. A pretty good grocery store as well as good chocolate department. The book store is not the biggest but nice to browse in. For men's clothes they carry many brands I like and the service is usually knowledgeable and professional. All in all a pleasant place to wander around and do some shopping in. read more

Beautiful mall. Many high end designer shops for people of all ages. I would do all of my shopping here if I could afford it. They even have a grocery store in the basement with a few coffee shops. Way cool classic department store. Lots of variety and virtually anything you need you can find it here. Christmas is amazing in the store, the lobby is breathtaking. Love the grocery store and the food and chocolate selected in one of the best one-stop-shops in town! If you're looking for modern housewares and something uniquely Swedish in design to take to friends locally ore back home, you will find it here. Staff is warm and welcoming and always there to help. The oldest department store in Sweden - there is some real charm to this building... This is probably the best 1-stop shopping in Stockholm for everything "higher-end" They have women's clothing galore, with branded shops by the likes of Acne, Boomerang, Filippa K, Mayla, even international brands Joseph, Tory Burch and Marc by Marc Jacobs have their own spaces. There are also many multi-label sections carrying name brands from all over... Mens is the same - great Scandinavian designer stores and awesome multi-label stores like Paul & Friends where you can find Comme de Garcon, Margiela and more. I recommend their bakery downstairs for some of the best macaroons I have ever had!!! Also, the furniture floor is quite a pleasure to walk through - they have some very unique pieces that you won't find anywhere else in Sweden. The book store is fun to browse, but somewhat small in comparison to others and the kids clothes are outrageously priced, but extremely cute! read more

This store reminds me of Neiman Marcus in the US or Harold's in the UK, it was fun to walk around and look at the offerings but wanted to see more Swedish designers represented. I was looking for a one stop shop for all high end Swedish designers. I did have a very relaxing lunch in one of the many cafes, but was expecting more. read more

Had about an hour to kill on our last day and decided to spend it the best way we could and that is by going shopping =D Read about NK mall and had to check it out. This mall is HUGE and confusing as heck! It's like a Bloomingdale and Neiman Marcus and Nordstorm combined in one maze. The food court downstairs, though, had a lot of delicious food stands and pastries and even a small market for your last minute shopping (yummy jams to bring back home!) I didn't bother shopping on clothing items bc it seems expensive but it was still fun to walk around in (and to go eat!) when you have an hour to kill. read more

I echo Samuel C on many dimensions of his review. A few additional notes: 1. NK Stockholm is vibrant. Check out their basement for Christmas and home goods. 2. NK makes navigating Stockholm easy because this department store has a rotating "NK" sign on top. An easy beacon to use in triangulating. 3. At Christmastime, the store windows exceed any Macy's display for a Swedish twist on the children's window. It was like LEGO meets IKEA and meets Eero Saarinen (yes, I know he's Finnish). Very engaging for all ages. 4. Lots of dining options upstairs. It is a shame this all closes by 8pm -- my only wish was for longer hours in December. Overall, this is a first class department store. Worth a visit. Stockholm overall is a sleeper for Christmas time travel. Stockholm's December temperatures were not too cold, every street has Christmas lights, etc. NK really anchors the trip. NK is the Bergdorf Goodman of Sweden where all the luxury goods are under one roof. From clothes to shoes, accessories and home decor. In the top floor there's a variety of restaurants in partnership with the two-michelin star chef Björn Frantzén. And even if the wallet doesn't allow for much, it's worth to take a stroll around and breath in the finesse and elegance of Stockholm. read more

The restaurant inside NK called Positano was a horrible experience. There is no sign saying: "wait to be seated." So we sat down. Then this shorter Asian-Swedish guy with a pony-tail waves at us, I walk over to him at the bar, and he tells me off. "Next time, don't sit down by yourself!" What?? I'm the customer here, you're serving me. Next time?? I'm pissed off now. Then he tells me what the dishes are, "what do you want?" I'm trying hard not to scream at him and not to ask to speak to his manager. But I say, "do you want me to tell you now, or do I get a chance to think about it?" At this point, I'm speaking very slowly but in a way that is clear that I'm going to lose my calm soon, at which point he realized he'd better start being nice. A really very unfriendly experience. My recommendation: DO NOT GO THERE. read more

If you have plenty of money and are not value conscious, this is a great Swedish Selfridges equivalent. You'll drop about twenty pounds for a salad and coffee in any of their cafes. Try to use the bathrooms and you'll be charged £1 per person, (so £4-5 for a family) even if you've shopped or eaten there - no exceptions, and they have security there to stop people using it for free. A pity given the high prices of everything there. read more

The Neiman's of Stockholm. Perfect for window shopping or if you have kroner to drop, actual shopping. The service is impeccable (I'm thinking of dams underkläder) and the best part is that there is a Blueberry right at the Regeringsgatan entrance. It's a must see during Christmas time when they festively decorate their store front windows...kind of a Candy Cane Lane thing. read more
