Very carefully prepared and well presented, the food is first rate and the service equally as impressive. Colchester has long needed a good restaurant serving traditional English dishes and we now have one here. Don't miss the experience of dining in a "one off" restaurant, away from the awful chain eating houses nearby.

It had changed into a bistro type bar so looking through the window we wondered how much it had changed from the pub that we loved. No worries. It had been modernised but hadn't lost it's old world charm. Neither had the welcome we received. We entered just after it had just opened, at mid-day, and got a fab smile from the young lady standing at the bar with the chef. He suddenly left into his kitchen ready for the onslaught of guests. She showed us to a table in the empty restaurant. I will say 'empty' but not for long. Within 45 minutes the place was buzzing. Menus were placed on the table and drinks order taken which arrived promptly. A nice touch, something that is missing these days, a jug of iced water arrived with two glasses. And this, without asking. Brilliant. We ordered the sharing seafood platter with, sorry, a portion of triple cooked chips. The platter was delicious and plenty for two people. The chips were definitely triple cooked. Very crispy. Delicious. Lovely garlic mayo as an accompaniment. Wonderful, fresh, bread. Possibly inhouse but definitely locally baked. Followed by crème brulee, a treasure in its own right. Finalising with dark coffee. Mustn't forget to mention those napkins and crockery. Plates of a dark colouring which accentuated the wonderful food and a 'cut above normal' paper napkins. Not the usual thin type. I know it's a minor thing but it gives this pub another edge over those other 'bistro' pubs. Pricing was more than reasonable for the quality of food and service. To the two young ladies serving at the tables, thank you. To the chef, great food, delicious. You do the pub proud. We definitely will be back on our next trip to Lavenham.

Beans very tasty and smokey, fat chips delicious, fish good but could have used some seasoning. The mrs had Ceasar salad, which she liked. Specifically because it didn't have too much dressing. In recent years, various members of my family have moved to the Stour valley area and so I was very excited to finally have the opportunity to go here, having just re-read the book to my own sons. The Butt and Oyster certainly lived up to my expectations. Although, like many country pubs have become over the past ten years, it's really more like a restaurant with beer, the interior is still clearly old, with terrific character. Its situation in the village of Pinmill is everything you could wish for as a Ransome fan, with a host of boats new and old lining the 'Hard', a scattering of well-preserved cottages and sailboats drifting by on the Orwell. The food here was very tasty with some local themes - seafood in particular. I had a delicious Lowestoft skate with capers and roasted tomatoes. Plus, they sell Adnams ales which instantly gives it at least four stars on my scale. A couple of pints of Broadside washed the food down a treat. After lunch we also had a great walk through meadows upstream along the river. A real English country experience that feels like it hasn't changed much since Ransome's day.
