The coolest Sunday sesh I've found so far. Wood fire pizza and live music. No drink specials though.

After reading the reviews and visiting the websites for each, Mario's moved to number one. Off we go! Well, it turns out that we did not have to go far as Mario's is just two blocks from our hotel. Mario's is located along the outside promenade of The Oasis Broadbeach Mall |Beach end. There are about a dozen restaurants along the promenade all of which have open front inside and outdoor dining. We choose a table along the promenade to take advantage of the ocean breeze. I spotted the Mussels Provencale and my wife decided on the Penne Pollo. We decided to share each. The mussels are steamed in white wine, garlic, herb & Napoli sauce and served in a large covered pot along with a small sliced loaf of bread. The Penne Pollo includes tender chunks of chicken, chorizo, semi-dried tomato and Spanish onion in light cream sauce. We added a small loaf of garlic bread ($8.50) to take advantage of both sauces (especially the mussel's sauce). Both dishes were very good but being from California and very familiar with authentic Mexican ingredients, we were both disappointed with the chorizo in the Penne Pollo dish. After a couple of trys, we separated it out and worked around it. More than offsetting the strange flavored chorizo was our server, Natha. She was very friendly and welcoming. Right off she knew we were not Australians and queried about our travel. When she found that we were from Southern California, she told us of her time in the US on the West Coast. We talked for a while sharing her stories of the US and our travels in New Zealand and Australia. She asked if we would like a picture together, to which we agreed. We left feeling that we had just found a new friend.

We left after a beer to find something to eat and ended back. By 7:00, there was a line to get in!…read moreService was top notch and food was the best of the week

We really enjoyed our meals - the salad was delicious, the pizza base was thin and crispy, and we loved their take on carbonara with the addition of peas and mint!

Pizza is inherently delicious, to be sure, and I've had some palatable and even enjoyable ones, but this was the first craveable one. Oddly enough, it was one of the first I saw upon visiting the area almost a year ago, but did not try it as it looked trendy and overpriced. Frankly, it is. But, still grading on a curve, that was a damn good pizza. They use a sourdough crust, which I suspect is a large part of its nuanced flavor. It was expensive, but also larger than many others' personal size and quite filling. Like most local places, they offer a set menu and do not give you a choice of toppings, but I was quite pleased to find the sharp four cheese pizza covered in ample arugula so I could feel at least a little bit good about eating it. The crust was nicely charred. While I suspect the sodium content in the sauce was rather high, as beachside indulgences go, it hit the spot all told. The location in Burleigh Heads is prime. There is a view of the beach (albeit across the highway), and it is quite close to a rainforest-covered overlook. The restaurant is large, with a bar and multiple indoor and outdoor seating areas, plus a fancy upper deck I did not venture to. They offer decent vegetarian options and even claim to be able to do a multicourse vegan dinner for groups that reserve for such. I fortunately visited on a midweek night, but despite its size, you can expect the place to be crowded at peak times. I imagine the crowds worsen the experience, but my own experience is that I'm happy to have found a pizza that excites my tastebuds.
