Good food, fast service. I skipped the drinks and dessert for budgetary reasons. The bill for 3…read morepeople (one of whom had a glass of wine) was the equivalent of US$74. But it all came crashing down at the end when I went to pay and the waiter tried to guilt me into tipping - which is not a common practice in the UK. He hovered over me as I put my card in the machine and the dreaded percentage options showed up on the screen as well as "No Tip" and "Custom Amount." I felt I was back in the U.S., where there's quite a lot of controversy about these screens but at least the staff usually look away at that time. This guy helpfully explained that I could tip - or not tip. Yeah, thanks. OK, buddy. No tip for you. I should have gone to Wetherspoon's.

Their website looked really upmarket, with promises of amazing service and dedication to preparing the best and freshest food etc etc, so I was expecting it to be quite pricey. I wouldn't have minded paying twice as much as we did for the food, if not more; our meal was that good. We went for their 3 Course Set Lunch offer which will set you back a grand total of £6.50 a head (?!) and this place is now my favourite Italian restaurant in Edinburgh. It's nothing fancy, but then it doesn't try to be: from the second you walk in you immediately pick up on the family-run, authentic vibe and it makes you feel really relaxed. I love italian food and I've been searching all over Edinburgh for that perfect little local Italian place, the one you go to when you can't be bothered to cook but still want to go somewhere you know will be good yet cheap. I've lived here for 4 years now, and I think I can stop looking.

Dimly lit and getting darker as the night goes on, with staff welcoming you like an old friend and an impeccable music selection. - No, seriously, did you hack my Spotify, Montpeliers? It's all so effortless and fun, and above all, done very well. I am happy to indulge. My spicy mango sour did the trick. I sometimes like to ask for a recommendation when I can't decide and Iona's tip was spot on. The cocktail menu is extensive; there's something for all tastes. This was delicious. - Not too spicy, not too sweet. Followed up by the cherry nuts shot with black cherry rum and amaretto. This cherry-lover approves and this served as a dessert to round the night off to a better end. Was it okay that they had run out of shot glasses and opted for a short cocktail glass and also topped it with a tonne of cream? Umm, YES. No disappointment here. Service was attentive despite the bar overflowing on a Friday night. This was just what we were after and is a wonderful spot for a drink. You'd be missing out if you didn't have a cocktail. If you're not drinking, there's an interesting selection of mocktails too. Cheers, Montpeliers! - You know just how it's done.

Whenever I would walk past Inca, there would always be a good atmosphere and almost always busy. It…read morewas only natural that I paid it a visit, to see what all the fuss was about. From the outside, the Italian mosaic-style writing is really quaint and lures you in, but I did not appreciate the harsh tiles on the inside, and I don't know which 'mood' the lighting was going for, but it was near impossible to see my friends, let alone my food. When we asked for a candle, we were told that there were problems with the electricity, so probably shouldn't have an open flame. This made us want to stay... The food was ok. Average, nothing special. I'm a traditionalist, so opted for the Carbonara (surprise surprise) and it was quite tasteless. To be honest, it wasn't worth the calories. My friend said she saw something black scutter across the floor at one point. The restaurant seemed clean enough and everything was laid out well, but there was something not quite right. I'm a bit hesitant to report of my bad experience in Inca as it is always so busy, so must attract custom from somewhere. There must be an amazing dish that I haven't heard about, or something I'm missing. When I find it, Ill let you know. Until then, stay clear.

Having said that, the atmosphere inside the restaurant is great as the staff are warm and inviting and make you feel at home straight away. I ordered their four seasons pizza which was tasty, had lots of toppings and cheese on it and it had a good crust on it - not too thin or burnt. Inca serves a range of pizza and pasta dishes, as well as salads and garlic bread. The food is very reasonably priced and they have a good selection of beers and wine. I went to Inca on a Thursday night and it was fairly quiet inside but it is likely to be busier at the weekends. I did find it fairly dark inside, but | think the staff wanted to create an 'ambiance', which is fine as long as you can see what you are eating!

Bellissimo! Don't let this tiny restaurant fool you, it can definitely pack in some big flavours!…read more Our friends recommended Piatto Verde to us one Friday night. Italian is not my first choice of restaurant but they told me how amazing this place is so we decided to give it a go. We were warmly greeted as they accommodated our party of five. This place is not showy at all and the ambiance is homely and relaxed. It is tiny though with about eight tables, this all adds to the authentic Italian charm. And after a few carafes of the house red you feel like you're at an old friends for dinner! The menu consists of Italian classics with a great selection of starters, pizzas and pastas. I went for the squid to start and a gluten-free pasta dish for my main. The squid was well cooked and the sauce delicious. My pasta was amazing! The simple sauce of mushrooms, pesto and cream was beautifully seasoned - proper comfort food. We greedily went for dessert, the profiteroles. UNBELIEVABLE! Huge and obviously homemade, instead of a chocolate sauce they were coated in a chocolate mousse. Delicious! Coming in at just over £20 for a 3-course meal and wine I will definitely be paying Piatto Verde another visit. Even if it is just for the profiteroles! Cheers, Amy

Did I just find my go-to Italian joint? Oh boy oh boy, I think that I did!!…read more I've walked past Piatto Verde at least a half a million times before. If you live in the area, it's easy to bypass the rows of kebab shops and small ambiguous food joints as "meh." One night in particular we walked past PV, peered inside, and said, "Nah. It's so small!" Lucky for me I didn't let that stop me in the end! With some friends in tow and a reservation booked in advance (you definitely want to do this on evenings, because did I mention how wee it is?), we marched in and were promptly seated. P.V. itself is cozy and shabby in the sort of mismatched, cozy, rather charming way only a place that doesn't take itself too seriously can accomplish. It has about four, maybe five tables, tops, but one of them could seat quite a few, so if you have a group you could perhaps squeeze 8 or so inside (there were also some chillens runnin' round, so there's that!). After being seated we perused the surprisingly extensive menu--any place that has more than one standard vegetarian main to try totally gets points in my book, and my other half and I were hard pressed to choose just which one we wanted to try. A fairly priced and solid carafe of house red wine was purchased, starters and mains were ordered, and the rest is history. Our server was around just enough to be thorough, just friendly enough to seem genuine, and also hollered in Italian to her buddies in the back several times, something that I think added to the authenticity of the place. ;) And the FOOD. If you're expecting something incredo-fancy, this is not your joint. But if you want the kind of creamy Italian goodness you can't quite ever manage to cook for yourself, this is your guy. I had a mushroom tortelloni main, and I promptly devoured it. My husband's calzone was enormous! Not only that, but our starters--olives for our friends, and for us mixed platters of mozzarella and tomatoes and the like--were simple and lovely. But I think what really sealed the deal for me was, as another Yelper has mentioned, the profiteroles. I made the mistake of ordering the perfectly adequate tiramisu, whereas my husband got the profiterole. After one bite I was hulking out with envy (he was nice enough to trade me one for some tiramisu, or I would have thrown myself on the ground and had a profiterole-less tantrum). DAMN were those things delicious. I've never actually had a profiterole before, but I reckon these would be tough boots to fill in the future. Summary: a lovely joint if you're looking for a casual, delicious evening (or lunch) meal at a surprisingly reasonable price! I'm absolutely going to return in the future. And you'll probably see me stuffing my gob with profiteroles.
