This was my first time in Scotland, and I've been on the lookout for a place to try some new things! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a smile and was swiftly seated. The decor inside is stunning, as well as the glowing tabletops. The service is wonderful thus far. Everything on the menu is fairly priced, considering the portion sizes are way above par. I did order a Tutti Frutti Mocktail, and it tastes freshly made and not frozen like so many places do. You can tell they want you to have a great experience. I went with the garlic and rosemary bread and I am surprised at how light it is, but the flavor definitely pops in your mouth. I've eaten half of it before the main course even arrived. I got the crab fettuccini. The service is extremely quick. My main course arrived within maybe 15 minutes of sitting down. Fresh grated Parmesan on top. The waitress recommended the risotto, and I can now see why. The pasta is the perfect temperature, coupled with the crab and Parmesan, it's the perfect blend to make your tastebuds dance. I can't stop licking my lips haha. So happy to say that I had room for dessert! The Sticky Toffee Pudding was recommended, and yet again, another perfect choice. Toffee was poured on top of the dessert, and it was hot, making the dish that much more enjoyable. Ok. I not only LOVE the food, but I finished all three dishes completely. They worked off each other very nicely and when I don't even have leftovers to take home, it is THAT good. Overall a joyful and delicious experience! If you ever take a trip or you are LOCAL to Scotland, definitely stop in here. The service is some of the best, if not the best, I've ever received at a restaurant, especially considering it's aesthetically upscale and the menu seems to be crafted with lots of thought and heart. read more

Want Italian in the heart of Edinburgh? Look no further than Gusto. This place is gorgeous with high ceilings and multiple levels to dine on. The staff was so kind and attentive. I was able to make a reservation earlier in the day and they were ready for us when we arrived. We got to watch them make the pizza from up above where we were sitting; it was like dinner and a show. A little disappointed. Ordered the "garlic bread". It was more like a pizza. Was ok, but not great. Olives were good, but you really can't do them wrong. :) Next I ordered the pork Belly and my brother the lasagna. Pork Belly was just not that tender. It should have been fall apart tender! The description in the menu was much better than the product delivered. My brother said the Lasagna was not great either. The kicker is the waiter. He was horrible. Hard time remembering anything we asked for, and when I asked him to describe the preparation of the two items I was considering (basically, sell me!). He gave me a very rudimentary explanation of each item. Like..."the pork Belly is a square piece". Really? And..."the duck is a duck leg". Very nice restaurant on George Street. We were a group of five in for a meal on a Sunday evening, and we had a nice booth with plenty of space. Staff members were attentive and friendly, and I enjoyed being able to see the kitchen from the table, such is the way the restaurant is laid out. I ordered a BBQ chicken pizza, and saw the dough being freshly made into a delicious pizza. Yummy! Other members of the group had a vegetarian pizza, the Gusto burger, and some pasta dishes. All were tasty and filling. We also ordered two of the pizza bread appetisers, but those are much larger than expected, so keep that in mind! We couldn't finish both sadly. The food was washed down with some nice beers and wine, and we all really enjoyed the meal overall. I wasn't even hungry the next morning, so filling was the meal! Recommended. read more

What a fantastic place to spend time with friends and colleagues after a hard days of work,especially now during Christmas time when all the decorative lights and decorations are up. On entry you will come across a massive Christmas tree, one you only see in big posh houses. And it also looked real to me. Such a delight! The bar area is in the front and we took hold of an area in a corner near the big windows. The barman was quick at hand, took our orders and handed us a tab key, which we could use at any time to order more. Our table was booked at 7.30 and was ready for us at any time. Eric was our efficient waitor for the whole evening. Whilst our table was just opposite an open kitchen and occasionally there was some loud noice, it was still a cozy wee corner, ideal for entertainment. Eric recommended an italian starter mix, so we went with his choice, which comprised of olives, artisan bread and garlic pizza bread. For a main I ordered the rib eye steak with peppercorn sauce and fries. The thinly cut french fries were just right and complemented the steak favourably. Both, the steak and the peppercorn sauce were spicy. But the taste, just magnificent! The steak was thinly cut and literally tender, nearly melting in your mouth. Now, to the best part. As a dessert I ordered Affogato: vanilla ice cream poured over with a shot of espresso and amaretto. Soooo delicious. It's really a great place to enjoy dinner and suitable for everybody. read more

Another great meal at Gusto. This time I went with a school friend of mine. With a 50% off food January sale there is every reason to be a social butterfly and catch up with everyone! My friend tried a new pudding this time, the hot chocolate brownie with ice cream rather than the chocolate sauce, I tasted it and it was delicious and I may have to try that the next time that I am in. I always request a booth when I make reservations as I think that they are nicer than the tables, personal preference I suppose but I think that it gives you a wee area for your group, more room. I had to prompt this this time as they automatically went to seat us at a table, but they quickly found us a booth. I think I may be able to squeeze one more visit here before the sale finishes, although going for a catch up with school friends means that the wine bill is higher than the food bill! read more

Gusto definitely changed my opinion on Italian restaurants. Until I ate here I was of the opinion that to be good, an italian eatery had to be 'cheap & cheerful' and a bit rough round the edges, and absolutely not part of a national chain. Gusto meets neither of these criteria, and yet it's definitely one of the best restaurants in the George Street area. I went mid-week for dinner, and was surprised at how busy it was. Deceptively large once inside, the opulent décor and subtle lighting makes it perfect for an intimate dinner for two, yet the buzzing ambience and fashionable air of the place would also make it an ideal place to start a night out. The food was lovely, if slightly pricey. However, i loved the fact that they have a Healthy Living Menu - i could still eat out but didn't have to go to the gym the next day, and both courses were bursting with flavour, which is usually a rare find among Lighter Options. However, for those not watching their figure, my partner's 28-Day Aged Premium Steak with grilled tomato and fries (£12.95) looked so good i couldn't help but steal a bit off his plate when he went to the loo. The service was spot-on, attentive and thorough without being intrusive, and I didn't have to think twice about whether or not I was going to leave a tip. I've been to Gusto a number of times now, due to its convenient west end George Street location and because it's set out over pretty large premises, so there's always a good chance of getting a speedy table in times of post shopping starvation need. The menu is extensive, which is brilliant, because I never feel I'm stuck going for the same tired options, which can be the case if you regularly frequent somewhere with a small menu that doesn't seem to change an awful lot. Great options for both lunch and dinner, and being an Italian restaurant, there are tasty pasta, rice, pizza, salad, meat and seafood options to choose from. I usually opt for the seafood risotto teamed with rocket and parmesan salad, a combination I find never goes wrong. The interior looks good, very modern and light, with big booths to slide into and a choice of romantic tables for two for some hand holding and such like. There is also an upstairs level, and a long communal table through the middle of the restaurant, where people can sit either side, which I think is pretty cool. Fantastic Bellinis too, they've definitely lured me in here more than once. Add outside seating to that - great for posing in oversized sunnies on a good day. read more

I often go to Gusto for lunch, the staff are friendly, the food is good quality Italian fare and the prices are reasonable. In fact it actually seems like it should be more expensive as the interior is quite swanky! Top Tip 1 - If you take kids in, they'll give them little chef hats and let them make their own pizzas at the table and go meet the Chef too! Top Tip 2 - they have a dining card which gives you up to 40% discount which is free and you can register for it on their website. The carbonara is great, as is the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream (swoon). Loved this place! I'll admit it got my attention with the sparkly string lights in their front windows, but it was a lovely experience! Our server was very nice, lots of GF options (which is great for my complicated self), I had the risotto and it was delicious! We also had dessert cocktails which really finished the meal off nicely. It was a bit hard at the end of our meal to find out server to pay, but that's no big deal. We also were sat at the front of the restaurant, I wanted to be by the fairy lights, but the place was huge! Fortunately our front side was sparsely seated, so it was pretty quiet, but towards the back people definitely sounded like they were enjoying themselves. Good, but not totally great, sums up my sole experience of Gusto. My pasta was in all honesty, similar to something I could make at home, but E's. loaded with salmon and oddly, peas was tremendous. This game of contrasts also spread to the garlic pizza bread, with the tomato basted half coming a cropper in favour of the simpler, garlic drenched section. The waiter got on my wick a bit as well, relentlessly upselling and a bit sleazy but not in a comical way. I'd go back though for the salmon pasta, and we did get to see a somewhat comical scene next to us, with the stingiest teen in the world taking his girlfriend for a date. Not only did he make her drink tap water, he loudly announced she could have "whatever she wanted" from the menu, before strongly suggesting she have the garlic pizza bread (made and priced as a starter / side dish) for her main course. First response when arriving at Gusto: Oooh, it's the pretty one with all the lights!! Second response to entering premises: Oh, it's quite nice in here. Then, after waiting at bar for seemingly ages, is it possible to get any service here? First response to Honey Dew Mocktail: Oh my god that's lovely! Pint of Hoegaarden and Honey Dew, between £7 - £8. Our booth is pleasant and we have a good view of the rest of the restaurant; the mezzanine looks nice and they've used the space well to fit in ample seating without seeming to overcrowd it. The service was adequate but not what I'd call brilliant, with several people waiting on the table over the course of the meal and no one standing out as giving fantastic service. The meals themselves were quite good - the tomato-smothered chiken skewers and scallops were particularly good, however, the tiger prawns were a bit more like tiger cubs drowning in too much creamy sauce which itself was over-spiced. The mushrooms and carpaccio was better than the prawns but not as good as the chicken and scallops. The mains were similarly differentiated. The mushroom risotto was very salty but cooked to just the right consistency; the seafood risotto passed the test, the lasagne was very good and the pizza was huge and looked fresh and tasty. Having ordered dessert and coffee, a beer was brought to our table that we hadn't ordered. We had read several reviews that talked about this and suggesting that the bill should be checked rigorously. Dessert was a rather wonderful affair; the sticky toffee pudding was a favourite of someone at our table and the apple tart with marscapone and almonds was lovely. The marscapone was actually a very creamy ice cream on top of the tart. The apple and almond filling was delicious and light, not over-sweetened, and hit the spot for my sore throat but the overly-creamy ice cream left me feeling a little like the dsh was just not quite right - but I do reserve the right to go back and try it when I'm not sick!! Coffee was not to the high standard that would have capped off an otherwise good (if not exceptional) meal, which was disappointing given the large barrista area they have for making lavazza, a firm favourite of the beloved. All in all, it was a really pleasant evening. The venue itself has the ambience and atmosphere/decor to suggest a relatively chic offering. Unfortunately, the service and food standards let it down just enough to tip me to three stars rather than four. Also, boys beware: there was some kind of grease on the stairs to the mensroom and two of our party nearly slipped when trying to make their way to or from. But it did have a number of plusses - certainly enough to make me go back and try it again. As Cheryl C. says, the menu is extensive and some of the duck dishes and salads sounded amazing. But I have to also agree with Tom D that it feels a bit like the venue is let down by some of the other elements. read more

My man decided to treat me to some food, so we decided to try something new and went to Gustos. In all honesty this is probably the first restaurant I have been to that I would rate 10 out of 10. When you walk in you notice the lovely, sophisticated decor, as you follow a friendly member of staff that finds you a nice table. The food we ordered thankfully didn't take long to prepare, and I am an impatient person, especially when I'm starving! I went for Gnocchi with slow roast pork, cherry tomatoes, pesto & rocket - so, so delicious. My partner got 10ozrib eye steak with mushrooms and he enjoyed it as well. For all the cocktail lovers out there, do go for the first one on the cocktail menu - Strawberry Cup - one of the best cocktails I have ever had. I was really happy with not only the gorgeous food, but also the service in the restaurant and I would really recommend it! read more

We were here to celebrate a birthday. Yes they are part of a chain but I don't think you should let that put you off from coming here. The decor is authentic and well thought out. The service was excellent (especially given that there were 8 of us including 2 children). The menu is extensive and seasonal which is great. The specials board had loads of options on it too if you didn't fancy anything off the main menu. A great place for a work lunch, a date or even a group meal. The food is tasty, the flavours sometimes surprising and the quality excellent even though the place was heaving! I see some people have had a bad experience here but I can't really knock it. I've also been to their restaurant in Leeds which was equally as excellent (their decor and ambience actually tops Edinburgh's). I thought it was great, I'd go back here and I would also recommend others to go here too. read more

I went here for a special meal last night and I think we all had a lovely meal. The layout is a bit strange, for my more traditional tastes. I found the booths comfortable but being seated near the kitchen and the stairs I felt a bit shunted towards the back. The staff were lovely, our waitress was so smiley and laughed along with some of the more cringy jokes made by a member of our party. (My Dad. Bless him.) The food was good, We were casually asked if we would like some bread and olives for the table. I had the chicken pate to start, more bread would be appreciated but the toasted bread they serve with it is gorgeous. For my main I had the scallop, pancetta and avocado salad (they had me at scallop...then pancetta...then avocado...) which was really good, although the dressing wasn't great, it didn't fit too well. For dessert I shared the 'Bombilinis' and thank goodness too. The amount of sugar had my teeth trying to escape as soon as I set eyes on them. And it ended up everywhere. Overall it was enjoyable, the service was great and the food was great but nothing to write home about. And don't go for the bread and olives...it's £6. read more

A solid choice among the George Street cluster - swish enough to feel much nicer than your average Italian chain (though I think there are a few of these around the country), but not so high end enough as to break the bank. The menu is extensive, spanning pizzas, pastas and a lengthy list of meat dishes. I took one look at my mate and I knew he'd had the same idea as me - steak o'clock! I really enjoyed my 6oz fillet steak, and I liked the addition of a juicy roasted vine tomato as well as chips and not-too-buttery peppercorn sauce. My mate amped it up to a 10oz fillet which was a better size for him though his medium-rare looked as pink as my medium, i.e. not very. Still it seemed of good quality and satisfied the steak cravings nicely, helped down by mr malbec. Despite being a pretty big place with an extra mezzanine half floor it's always packed in here, especially on weekend evenings, so best to book ahead. We had a late sitting at 9.30pm this time so service was lovely but a little slow towards the end of the meal as they were basically packing things up. There's a small bar area at the front which is nice to wait for your table and peruse the drinks menu - as you inevitably ending up having to do. Quite a mix of clientele here too, from very dolled up hen parties to casually-dressed family dinners (averting their eyes from the hen parties) to couples on date night. What I really like about this place though is the decor. The double-height wall on the right hand side is entirely covered in framed black and white photos that is a really simple yet effective decor trick. I'm also a complete sucker for fairy lights, so dressing the entire front window with a cascade of golden lights just draws me in like a moth to a flame. Particularly good when you've got fussy eaters with you given the largely inoffensive menu, and I'm sure I'll be back again! read more

I decided to go into Gusto for a light lunch as I had heard two women on the train chatting about how fantastic it was. Gusto is one of the bigger eateries in Edinburgh which is great because it means no waiting and plenty of staff. I was eating alone which I hate beyond hate, however I think the waitress knew this because she tried to seat me at an inconspicuous table which I appreciated! I was impressed to see that they had a one course lunch menu including a drink, alcoholic or soft, and I decided to go for that. I had a glass of red wine which was very nice for what was probably a cheap bottle of house, and opted for the spaghetti with chicken and pesto. There wasn't a great deal of choice to be honest and I was disappointed there wasn't more of a pasta choice. My meal came in super quick time, and I can't fault it. The spaghetti was very al dente, and the pesto was delicious. There wasn't an awful lot of chicken in the dish but what was there was cooked perfectly. I left very satisfied with my lonesome lunch, and only £8.95 lighter! Great deal for great food. The dinner menu looks pretty good so maybe a dinner time visit is in order soon! read more

Gusto seemed to have missed out on this point and although the ambiance is great and I would recommend this place highly for a date, both our lamb cutlets and duck breast lacked the S word. They were both actually cooked to perfection- the duck especially was just the right about of pink in it. However the fat was soggy and cooking it slower would have made it amazing. This place is good, not exciting but very good. It is a chain but they are not so big it feels manufactured. As it is right near where we work it is a very handy little local lunch spot. They £9.95 lunch menu has a nice selection on it - I can highly reccommend the Ceasar Salad and the sea bass - plus it includes a glass of wine. I came here on a second date with a guy once and swiftly ordered the French Martini (as I had been watching Sex and The City all day). It arrived with a huge blueberry in the centre, which I thought was a nice touch. So nice, infact, that I then threw the martini all over the girl next to me and smashed my glass. Real smooth. Clumsiness aside, I really liked Gusto's. They have a nice layout, with a huge table in the middle to accomodate bigger parties and small booths and intimate tables all around it. My mum and I ordered the garlic bread on the side - big mistake! It was huge! Too big for us to share! I had duck, which was cooked to perfection. I love Gusto, a lot! Whilst not having quite the same draw as neighbouring Tigerlily, I actually prefer the food here, and the decor in the restaurant is breathtaking. Think chandeliers and hundreds of photographs, dark wood and low spotlights. For such a reasonably priced restaurant, the food is amazing and the atmosphere is great too. Gusto originates from the Latin word Gustus meaning 'a tasting' and THAT it certainly is! Gusto is one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. I have been here too many times to count and have dragged pretty much all my pals to it. It all started 2 years ago...... I visited this place for the first time when I was meeting someone for lunch. Having been out the night before, I had struggled to even walk the length of George street and had hoped that lunch would comprise of a ham and cheese toastie at some obscure cafe with no alcohol in sight to upset my already churning belly. My pleas were obviously ignored by my pal who had no sympathy for the state I was in and is a firm believer in a good feed being the solution for all of life's problem when accompanied by good wine. So we arrived and were seated at a corner booth. The service was prompt and efficient and the Italian waiter who served us somehow convinced me to order a bottle of wine. It may have been the fairy lights or the delectable aromas wafting through the place, or just the overly flirty 50 year old Italian waiter but I fell for his charm and ordered a lovely bottle of Red to go with my lunch. I had duck for my main which was deliciously succulent with rosemary potatoes and my pal had a pork loin, pork belly combo. My pal thought that the pork belly was a tad tough but didn't complain because the rest had been so tasty. The manager picked up on the fact that the plate hadn't been emptied and asked her why. We had 25% knocked off the food when the bill arrived and it came accompanied by a sincere apology from the manager. While I would have definitely revisited the place after tasting the food, that experience made me even more determined to go back. I have tried plenty things on the menu since and still can't decide what I like best. Their griffin pizza is amazingly spicy and filling, while their lobster and prawn spaghetti makes a simple pasta dish into something special. Their steaks are cooked to perfection and try the lasagne for a more home-made touch. The Sticky toffee pud is one of my favourites indulgences with the chocolate brownie with pistachio ice-cream just perfect to satisfy chocolate cravings for chocolate or the Lemon Sorbet for when you 'just can't have another bite' They have a good selection of cocktails and the prices are pretty reasonable for what they are. The Raspberry Caiproska and Strawberry Daiquiri are lovely and refreshing and they have a nice bar for those who wish to stop for just a drink or two and to enjoy the romantic fairy lights.... To sum it up.... I think the service, the food and the ambience are all pretty fantastic and so are the prices especially for a George street haunt. read more

We got to our table and were given a set Christmas menu which we didn't want and were not forewarned about. The food we received was good but overpriced. I've been to Gusto twice recently. Our first visit was because Brown's next door couldn't take us for over an hour, so we look at Gusto's menu and stepped in. Overall, the experience was a good one. The food was tasty, though as noted by a previous reviewer, it did arrive extremely quickly. In addition, a couple of the sider order were missing. The waiting staff were a little hard to get hold of once the food had been delivered to our table and my veg side eventually turned up 20 minutes into the meal. They were very apologetic however. The second visit was planned, but was a bit of a disaster. After a long day's shopping in Edinburgh, we decided that Gusto was a preferable option to Browns as it was extremely quiet. In fact, it was nearly empty. We asked for a booth located at the far end of the restaurant, away from the front door and the freezing wind whistling through it. The waitress said she'd have to check with the manager. We were told 'no'. We then asked for a table in the upstairs section, to be told it would be possible if we 'finished up in half an hour'. We pointed out that the restaurant was empty and asked her to check again. The manager was about 10 feet away from us, doing some paperwork. He never once turned to face us, never mind speak to us. We were once again told 'no'. I decided at this point to eat elsewhere and told her so - she shrugged and we left. Browns, though crowded, got us a great table in 15minutes - we enjoyed a drink at the bar in the interim, and wondered just why Gusto was so empty Maybe they were booked to the rafters. They never said so. Maybe they were having an 'off' day. Pretty poor customer service in any event, though I may give them another go if I'm in the neighbourhood. read more

I've been to a lot of italian restaus in edinburgh and Gusto is the greatest, well first of all they had non alcoholic cocktails so that was heaven for me! n it was great. we had a pizza bread for a starter , half of it was mozzarella n half tomato with basil and it tasted really good n the texture was perfect. for main i had chicken in a creamy sauce with mushroom and polenta (a substitute for potato i was told ) anyway it was all delicious and the sauce ... YUM! portions were quite large so i couldn't have a dessert! the price was good . parking on a sunday is quite hard but i got lucky. read more

Very spacious restaurant. Modern style with great decor. Great service with lots of options for food and drink. I got the sourdough pizza and it was one of the best pizzas I have had in the UK. Great for vegans and vegetarians because there is pizzas and pastas you can eat and the wines are labeled as vegan and vegetarian or not--I have never seen this before and it's great. Ambience was good and had us upbeat as we sat down, but ultimately the food and overall experience was poor. Slow service to begin. Pizza especially disappointing - lacked flavor and not even fully cooked. Side salad carelessly presented. Cheese platter charcuterie plate with just 2 pieces of bread. Very subpar. Everything about Gusto is amazing, the staff are friendly and attentive, the decor is fab, the seating is very comfortable and the food is to die for. The decor is very fancy with a black and white theme going on and they have comfortable leather booths that can accommodate up to seven diners. The dinner menu was extensive which made it a difficult decision when deciding what I wanted, I was very surprised as the prices were a lot less than I had anticipated with the average price of a main around £9. I opted for the penne salmon pasta after hearing that it was the best thing ever. You know what? It was. Absolutely delicious with a gorgeous creamy sauce, garden peas, spinach and a very generous amount of salmon mixed in. At first glance, it didn't look like a big portion and I was a little worried it wasn't going to fill me up as I was starving. I couldn't have been more wrong, the portion was rather deceiving and was actually so filling that I struggled to finish it but waste not want not, and you really can't justify wasting something that tasty, it was amazing. We also got a garlic bread pizza side which was amazing and one of my friends got "The Griffin" pizza and after sampling a slice, I can confirm that it's definitely up there with the best pizzas ever. For dessert I went for the "berry mess" which was massive, and a very reasonable £5.75. The meringue was delicious, and the berries were really sweet and refreshing. Seriously best food I've had in quite some time. Randomly discovered this place on George Street and I'm so glad we did! The tiramisu martini is AMAZING. And the desserts are out of this world. I dont know what to write as my review of this place. In some aspects it was great - it really excelled itself in terms of food (a great modern take on classic italian food), the decore was nice and the staff were friendly. But, it was missing something. It was an odd atmosphere - not exactly cold, but certainly not welcoming and friendly. It left me feeling slightly on edge, and I was relieved when we finally left after paying a bill that I thought was very expensive for what we had eaten. I've eaten here three or four times as its very convenient to where I live. The food (in particular the pizzas) is good. The service is excellent also. I think we have been a few times where deals have been on offer (birthdays etc) so keep your eye out for a special deal! read more
