At first glance I thought this rather plain looking cafeteria-stye eatery near the bus-station in…read morethe Myer centre was probably just another one of those Asian greasy spoons where you can fill a takeaway container with fried rice, sweet and sour everything, beef and black bean etc. But then I realised their bain marie housed some really interesting and authentic looking Yum Cha style delicacies and of course, there's the titular Shanghainese noodles. They also do the popular bubble tea and a range of frappes, but when I visited the selection was a bit limited as they were out of quite a few of the flavoured syrups. The two ladies who served me (I got the impression the older one was the mother and the younger one her daughter) were very apologetic and lovely about the whole thing. In the end I settled on the 'peppermint black tea' with 'pearl jelly'. I also picked up a snack, one of their intriguing 'tea leaf eggs', which as the lady described is an egg hard-boiled in tea. While the effect of the tea infusion could be seen in the egg's discolouration, I'm not sure if I could identify the tea flavour on a blind taste. It was yummy though. I'd love to go back and try the noodles and some of their other bain marie treats like their dumplings, whole grilled fish, red bean buns and maybe even chicken feet if I'm feeling adventurous.

It can be a little tricky to find if you're not specifically looking for it or you're catching a 130, but when you do find it you will be rewarded. They have yum cha stuff in the bain maries including various types of steamed buns and they're the biggest BBQ porn buns I've ever had! They also serve noodles, and meal sets including roast duck or pork. As per habbit when at Chinese eateries, I ordered the roast duck meal set and a pork bun. To be honest, I would've been satisfied with just the pork bun it was that big, but it was good to try more stuff. The roast duck came with succulent duck, a huge bowl of rice, steamed vegetables and a bowl of soup for around $13, the duck was so god damn good, saucy and tender and the meal was excellent value. They shop is extremely authentic and it shows in their customer base; only white guy in the entire dining room ;-). If you're on the ground floor of the myer centre and are going to settle for KFC or McDonald's, walk straight past them and head over for an awesome feed that will fill you up. Ps. The noodles were frighteningly delicious, fresh - we watched them being made - and super chewy. There are bottles of soy sauce and vinegar and tubs of chilli oil on each table so you can adjust the flavour to suit your taste! The staff are really friendly and the prices are quite reasonable. The wonton noodle soup would be the best for the middle of winter... it was still enjoyable early autumn. Bold flavours, easy to eat, and hot. Their fried wontons had a good crunch and equally nice. Staff are friendly. They had a deal on their meals, get a small drink and side dish for a few extra dollars. When I say "small drink" I mean a tiny drink that would be maybe 150ml. The bottle is so small you could sit on it and not even realise.

What attracted me to Noodle Hutt were the attractively presented buffet station with what looked like just out of the wok offerings. I chose a new flavour that I'd never tried before: Balinese Chicken. The flavour is spicy, with visible chilli flakes present in the slightly sweet sauce. I chose the fried rice rather than boring old plain rice. It costs no extra. The chicken was thigh meat rather than breast, which is a more flavoursome cut. I did find myself fishing out some gristle between chews. But flavour is King. The portion size is such that you could easily have some for lunch and come back to it for dinner, or leftovers for the next day. For $8, you really can't complain about the meal size. Huge is an accurate description (and I'm a big eater).

First, you'll need to choose either stir fried or soup noodles followed by the type of noodles (I recommend the flat wide noodles). Then you'll pick the sauce from a list of set Asian options and finish off with your choice of meat and/or vegetables. The range of proteins runs from chicken to seafood and the price escalates from $8.50-$10. I haven't been disappointed since I started eating here and have made it a point to come almost once a week. It's nothing but dressed up ramen noodles. Something keeps me going back to their website though to look for their 2-4-1 deals and whenever I do find one, back I go to slurp my way through a bowl of miso ramen. Wagamama Express is better than its predecessor in that the meal prices are cheaper and the food is just as tasty. The menu is not as extensive of course - there's only one ramen option available if you want noodle soup. However, they've covered the main lunch time favourites such as katsu curry, teriyaki chicken and yaki soba. It's also situated in the Myer Centre food court so it's casual dining. It'll be interesting to see if Wagamama Express can compete against the Japanese food court favourite Hainachi or whether it's purely trading off its brand. My guess is that it's here to stay.

You know, that Chinese food smell that sends your cravings through the roof. I have had a few dishes from here and they do not disappoint. A lot of people seem to order the noodle stir-fry dishes which are indeed very appetising but I particularly like the noodle soup with braised beef dish, mainly because the beef is sooooo tender and packed with flavour. The service here is always very friendly and you will never have to wait long for your meal to be cooked, even during their busier lunch period. Out of all the food options in Toowong Village (it is pretty limited), Happy Noodles is the place I would recommend to anyone.
