I've long been a fan of sushi for breakfast. I won't hear ill of it. And while not sushi, the Japanese breakfast from Mizu in Teneriffe has been on my Brisbane breakfast list for long enough to make Sunday's breakfast at this oft forgotten Japanese restaurant well worth the wait. Being in a large group we were able to easily sample a little of everything - bento boxes, okonomiyaki, omelette and the dish we all wish we got - Loco Moco (grilled beef mince pattie, fried egg and green salad on a bowl of steamed rice, topped with sesame sukiyaki gravy sauce). My long black was nothing by comparison to the green macha latte which looked like and had the texture of Mylanta but actually tasted quite good. Mizu only offer breakfast on weekends and it is definitely worth the venture away from the usual cafe breakfast.

    Just lovely

This is a simple truly Japanese experience. Great fresh food, good portion sizes and fabulous value for money. Love the lunch Bento boxes for $12.50. Lovely miss soup and delightful green tea. Staff are friendly and efficient. Just a perfect local Japanese location

It's my favourite sushi haunt and it definitely helps that it's on the same street as my work building. With unique plates filled with buttery fish and a wide variety of cooked options including karaage, gyoza and dumplings there's something to please everyone. Service has been exceptional each time I eat here with water glasses being refilled regularly and helpful staff at every turn. It can be slightly more expensive than your bog-standard suburban train, but I'm willing to pay for the atmosphere and comfortable surrounds.

They have simplified their 'plate pricing' by only have 2 types of plates on the menu - all plates with coloured rings around the edges are $4.50, the patterned plates / premium items are $8.00. Wide selection of fresh made sushi rolls, nigri, entree items (gyoza, prawn parcels, chicken karaage bites etc), premium items, desserts and miso soup on the sushi train, but you can also order from the menu. Tried a mini tempura prawn udon bowl soup for $8.00 and it was awesome. Brown rice and black rice sushi rolls on the train and lots of vegetarian options. They have a little takeaway window at the front of the restaurant with sushi rolls for a quick takeaway lunch. The chefs work fast, and all items on the sushi train are fresh, fresh, fresh. Takeaway can be made to order. Great spot for lunch, nice ambiance and friendly staff. Just make sure you get in early to beat the lunch crowds! Takeaway and catering also available.

Located on Ann Street, just around the…read morecorner from Chinatown, you'd be forgiven that it was a cheap themed japanese restaurant that was more flash than substance with its built in BBQ tables and vinal bench seating. Let me be the first to apologise and recommend that you dig beneath the surface and try this place out. For our first visit we ordered from the menu as we didn't have time to linger over our meal. The quality, texture and flavour of the food was sensational. My poached eggplant with homemade miso was divine with hints of green tea and something equally creamy and almost buttery without being overly salty. A mouth winner for sure. Our other choices included karage, aburi salmon, pork gyoza and edamame beans. The pork gyoza were perhaps the dissappointment of the night, but only because they were so plain when compared with the amazing flavours and textures of the other dishes. Even the condiments of homemade sesame chilli sambal and a beautiful soy blend were something we were prepared to beg the chef for the recipe to attempt to recreate at home. The amazing thing is that with a bottle of sake and 5 dishes we walked away with a bill of $50 for two. An absolute winner and we'll definately be back and perhaps next time to try out the BBQ option.

Service was fast and friendly and the waitstaff actually kneel or sit at your level not hovering over you which i always appreciate. We ordered off the menu to get a feel for the place, we both had hot stone bowls, which neither of us jad experienced before. Our meal came out neatly presented and then we were asked if we wanted oureals stired! Hell yeah, stir away! My server was quick enough to save a piece of pork trying to escape my bowl from hitting the table and my kimchee was stirred through thoroughly. Heads up if you've never had kimchee before, its spicy but totally worth it! Im usually not a fan of spicy food but in the spirit of trying new things i gave it a go and enjoyed it thoroughly. My partner who is a lover of all things spicy was impressed too! Drinks appear to be on the pricey side on the menu but once you see the size of them you quickly change your mind. It was a school night so we only had juice, but i want to go back and try saki! We walked out spending less than $40 for 2 people including drinks and a shared dessert. I'll be going back!
