I've been golfing Deer Valley for many years, and I love it there - it's my "go to" course,…read moreespecially when I can't find a great deal on something else. First, Deer Valley is an affordable course. I love to golf, but can't afford to shell out top-shelf prices for a round. HOWEVER, Deer Valley isn't exactly a cheap "hacker's course". There's a wide variety of hole styles to keep your attention, highlighted by their signature par-3 #5 that takes you 120 yards out, but straight down to a soft green. The view is intimidating, but it's a hole you could shoot at for hours. Immediately after #5, you're challenged to drive over the rocky, steep face that you just came down. There are holes with blind tee shots over hills, hard dog-leg turns, and plenty of terrain to navigate. I haven't even mentioned hole #1 - a long par 5 up a big hill (and almost always into the wind). Once you get past that hole, the rest doesn't feel too bad. Deer Valley is extremely scenic with tee boxes overlooking vast valleys. In the fall, the colors are breathtaking. Being removed from the big city, it's one of the most peaceful courses I've been on. Keep an eye on your ball, but don't forget to take in the scenic views and watch for wildlife! It's beautiful there! The new "Valley" nine is nice, but I still like the Ridge and Prairie best. Valley is a little tighter and most of the holes run in, you guessed it, the valley... Definitely a course worth hitting. If you're a prude and want to be addressed as "Mister", have your clubs cleaned by some high school boy working for tips, go somewhere else. If you're looking for a course that is great bang for the buck, to hang out with some friends and have a great time - hit Deer Valley.

My first time there, I asked to walk 18 holes and the pro shop guy said "110% of people take a cart." You will get a work out for sure. The golf is challenging, keeps you thinking, and is really well maintained. Worth the trip.

I used to hit Tumbledown Trails often. It was close, and relatively affordable golf. Fast forward…read moreto 2021 - it's gone, but here's Pioneer Pointe in its place. Pioneer Point is an upscale executive course comprised of 13 holes - all par 3s except for a par 4. The course was mostly reconstructed compared to the previous layout, but if you remember Tumbledown, you'll recognize a few things. A couple holes are essentially the same (though higher quality with a few tweaks). Overall, the course is quite pleasant. The quality of the fairways, rough and greens is really good. The bunkers are well-kept, too. Skilled golfers will appreciate the consistency of the playing surface throughout the course. A lot of care has been put into this course. The hole layouts were well thought out. While a "par 3" course, golfers can be challenged by well-placed bunkers and strategic carries over prairie grass fields. What makes things really interesting are the tee boxes. There are no color-coded tee markers. Tee off wherever you like! There are yardage markers around the tee box areas, so you can pick your distance. Working on your longer irons? Tee off farther back. Want to carry a bunker? Slide over and change your angle. The idea is that you make the holes what you want them to be. Honestly, I like this approach. If you're competing with your buddies, simply agree on where you're all teeing off... But why only four stars, Tom? For me, I like the more traditional course layouts. Give me 9 (walking) or 18 (carting), with par 3, 4 and 5 holes. I can see others being drawn to the 13-hole layout, and maybe over time I'd warm up to that concept. Also - we walked the course. Especially in the beginning and end, there is quite a lot of walking between holes. While I don't mind getting my steps in, if you're being tailed by 2 people in a cart, they will probably catch you. The course is pretty new, so I don't know if there are plans to do more out on the course itself. But more yardage markers would be appreciated. There are a few around the tee boxes, but on the longer holes, when you're in the fairway, the only way you'll know your distance to the green is with a laser range finder. The course is not in my golf apps, so I can't use that for scoring or yardage. At one point, i had no idea how far out I was, and I had to guess (it didn't work out well). I may be back. For the money, I can find a round of 18 with a cart not too far away. If I need to get in a quicker round closer to home, this would suffice. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played there yet - then everyone can decide for themselves if they would want to go back.

Ah, how I wish I was wealthy and could retire early. This would be heaven. F'real…read more A good friend won a foursome in a silent auction and treated us to a round at Hawk's Landing. It was an interesting process for him to get a tee time - members rule the roost at Hawk's, so you take what you can get. Thankfully, they found us a great tee time on a Friday morning - perfect. The course is fantastic. Granted, there are challenges to playing a course for the first time. You don't know where those hidden "gotchas" are. Like - hole #1. It looks like a nice, wide fairway. My drive rode down the left side of the fairway and looked to be in great shape. When you drive up, you realize at the edge of the fairway, it drops off and feeds into some wild grass. I went from "yay" to "boo" in seconds. While I was able to find my ball and hit onto the green from there, I think I could have done better off the tee knowing what was up ahead. But I digress... The entire course has character. Many courses have a few signature holes that everyone remembers while we forget the 14 other drab "straight and boring" holes. But not this course. There is character galore here! I'm not a big fan of courses that have houses along the fairways, but it's not a big problem here. They're only in range if have a terrible hook or slice. While I can slice with the best of them (and did a couple times), I only ended up in one yard (and barely). Some of the houses are pretty impressive and add to the experience. If you insist on a woodsy, all-nature golfing experience, this isn't your course. We didn't have any problems with friendliness - not from other golfers (members) or the staff. Everyone was quite nice and the smiles were out everywhere. I can't afford to golf here often, but if I could, I'd love to.

Outstanding course, in great shape with great staff. One of the best clubs around Madison.read more

We ordered months in advance as part of our RSVP for the wedding and my daughter selected salmon. She does not like pork and would NEVER have selected it. Sure enough, her name card had a little piggy on it and they brought her pork! We immediately said it was a mistake and that she had ordered salmon, and they replied by saying they only made exactly enough for what was selected for over 150 people. Please. You NEVER ever tell a guest they are wrong, or it must have been a computer glitch, and/or they have no other option. It was rude and they acted like it was not their problem. I do not eat meat, so I selected a vegetarian option, and they even asked if dairy was okay, Parmesan, etc...which was fine. I got a plate of pappardelle pasta that was so dry from sitting out before service it was shocking. It had spinach (I'm personally not a fan of cooked spinach in anything, but apparently that was the limit of culinary creativity) and mushrooms (not portabellas, which I had specifically requested), with a salt/lemon "drizzle," for lack of a better term. It was so dry, so salty and lemony, it was disgusting. I was hungry after skipping the salad, and took 2 bites of the pasta and asked them to take it away. My son had some delicious fresh green beans with his chicken selection, and that became my dinner. No one ever came back to offer an apology or accommodation for either my daughter or myself, and you don't go to a wedding for the food, but a country club touted as higher-end for the area should have a manager at the ready to make sure the guest experience is everything they paid for and expected. The fairways were lovely.
