Widgeon Valley National Wildlife Area is located at Pit Lake in Pit Meadows. The only way to…read moreaccess the wildlife area is by paddle boat (Kayak or Canoe) as no motor boat accesss is permitted. To access Widgeon Slough you must drive to Pit Lake at Grant Narrows Regional Park. You then Paddle across the Narrows and into Widgeon Slough. Like Pit Lake, Widgeon Slough is Tidal and can cause real problems for people if they paddle in at high tide. Places that you could pass through before may have only 2 inches of water or none at all! This place is amazing though. There is almost dead silence wile in the slough. There is only the sound of birds, your paddle and maybe the odd plane above. There are a lot of water ways to explore in the Slough but one place to get to is the Widgeon Camp ground. It is Paddle access only but has 2 outhouses and multiple tent pads. No fires are permitted here at all and you can get huge fines if caught. From Widgen Camp you have arrived in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park and have a whole new place to explore.

Plenty of people come here and book designated picnic tables to celebrate special occasions as many of them have bbq option. Else just the lake side view for any celebration is enough. I have taken many hikes around this beautiful lake and seen breathtaking views so you must go as well. The whole park is huge and I must say I could not explore in just one visit. So you got to come back to it again and again. Enjoy hikes with beautiful lake view but be careful around here as it is pretty wild and some of the trails are not for first timers.

Popular provincial park with a short and long hikes, lakes, and lots of frontcountry and…read morebackcountry campsites. It's very hard to find parking in the afternoon on a summer weekday. The backcountry alder flats campsite has no designated tent pads and a broken door at the outhouse. There are only 6 tent pads at panorama ridge and the booking system has changed from previous years so you have to book the specific site rather than the general backcountry area. When we camped at panorama ridge, there was another 6+ tents scattered throughout the top not on tentpads on a Wednesday in the summer. The wind gets really bad at the top and there are mice that know to hunt for food in the emergency shelter overnight.

Both areas are protected land but are open to the public for walking or biking along dyke systems. The portion of Pitt-Addington Marsh located behind Minnekhada Regional Park is not as assessable as there are few accessible dykes to walk or bike along. If you have waterproof boots you may be able to walk along the forest bordering Minnekhada to see more of the Reserve. The Portion of Pitt-Addington Marsh located at Grant Narrows is far more accessible and friendly to both walkers and bikers. There are kilometers of dykes to explore including a few viewing platforms. There are lots of birds here including many migratory species depending on the time of year. This portion also may have paddling opportunities depending on tide levels throughout the dyked marsh streams. If you keep your eyes peeled you may spot a deer or a black bear here as well! The dry spell during spring/summer means the waterfall is more like a trickle. Cliff falls is now a…read morenarrow stream going over part of the rocks. I looked at others' pictures and could now see the difference. Most of the rocks are barely covered by the water. The interesting part now seeing the perfect round holes in the rocks. I guess those holes were formed by erosion when the falls was in full power, gushing over the rocks. We certainly need more rain to fill the creek. It is quite an easy hike/walk to the falls. Some parts have bridges and steps to help navigate. There are picnic tables and benches in the clearing so you can rest and refresh. Bins are there for garbage. We didn't walk to the hatchery area as the heat got to us. Nice place. I will be back to check out the salmon hatchery next time and hopefully the waterfall will be at its usual size. Parking is available at the lot next to the baseball field.

One of the parks that we stumbled upon was Blue Mountain Park. We mainly look for a playground, so my son can go run around and play until he's exhausted. This park offers: an outdoor wading pool (for those hot summer days), tennis courts, sports fields, softball field, covered picnic area, a playground for the kids (why don't they have one for adults), and spray park (woohoo!). By the kids playground, they have an unusual bronze statue of a horse and buggy that is pretty fun for the kids to ride on. This playground has something for all age groups from toddlers to kids. There is also a paved bike trail around the playground area, so you can also bring you kid's bikes as well. This is a great park to host a picnic (when there is no snow of course...) or to play a game. Definitely a must for families if you're in the area.

In addition, in our short time up there we saw two swans, six herons, four falcons, two eagles, and many other feathered creatures I have no idea what their names are. This place is for the birds and bird lovers. As Louise G. said you can rent canoes here, but be careful of the currents in the narrows. If you do rent a boat make sure to ask the very helpful Katzie Development Corporation staff members how to get to the waterfalls and more private beaches. They will also have information on how to rent the cute little cabins you can see from the boat launch. There is a really well maintained dyke with a trail which cross the south side of the lake. So bring your walking shoes or a bike and start exploring.

It was quite full on a Saturday afternoon but we managed to get a spot. The other side has more parking lots as that's where more activities are - swimming pool, disc golf course, lacrosse box, and sports field. We were closer to Lost Lake, so we started our walk from there. I liked how there were trail markers along the way, with maps at major intersections so you could find your location. We did the interlaken trail from Lost Lake to Mundy Lake, followed by the lakeside loop around Mundy Lake. Then we did part of the Perimeter trail back to Lost Lake and out of the park. The map looks big and quite daunting to walk. But it is a pretty easy walk but mostly flat ground. I love the trees and fall foliage. I learn there is a big leaf maple tree and the leaves are huge. Bears live in the park and we didn't see any. We also didn't see any painted turtles, which live in Lost Lake area. There are lots of fungi and mushrooms growing on the tree trunks. The off leash dof trail is also nearer the Lost Lake entrance. Maybe that's why we saw more people with dogs parked there. This is my new favorite park to walk. The longest trail is the Perimeter trail at 4km round trip. The others are 1 km to 1.5 km.

Park visitors can enjoy a nice recreation experience here because it offers something fun for all ages -- nice trails, baseball diamond, dog off-leash, lacrosse box, newly renovated outdoor pool, kid's play area, off-road cycling and even a nine hole disc golf course, etc. Also, I appreciate this park because there is a CC Market Concessions, opened during the summer season, conveniently open from 10am to 6pm daily. I like hassle free picnic when one can buy foods like hot dogs, wraps, chips, ice cream and drinks at the park when hungry. Parks with food options is nice for folks like me who wants to stay in this park longer and didn't pack any picnic foods. Huge parking lot is available for free but parking spots could be challenging on weekends and busy event days so do budget time accordingly for parking.
