In my personal opinion as a graduate of this program. My life has changed, I see some of the reviews of relapsed students and don't listen to them they a full of lies and crap, I graduated the program as a level rank of student learner. I have been on discipline over 15 times and in the book over 800 times. (The book is a different measure of discipline) I was disciplined because I put myself in that position. It wasn't because of the staff, and I was loved by many people in that atmosphere. Times did hurt but that was because of myself. But I learned and moved forward, don't listen to the people who graduated or ran away and relapsed those ex students were not doing the right thing and thought they knew better. I graduated from North Carolina Boys Academy in July of 2022, nearly 4 years ago. I was 14 when my parents enrolled me into the program. Obviously I can't speak for everyone that has gone through the program but in my experience it completely changed my life for the better. I went from a rebellious, hateful atheist with zero motivation to go to school to a born again Christian. NCBA sucked at first obviously, but growth is a painful process. The staff aren't controlling people on a power trip, they genuinely cared about us. Also the reviews about them not feeding us are not true. We got 3 meals a day and we were even allowed to get seconds if there was extra. Overall my NCBA experience was not perfect but it was a net positive because it helped me to come to salvation and grow as a person. The staff can pour into the students and coach them in the right direction but ultimately it is up to each student to make a decision to either drop their pride and be teachable or block out all help and stay stuck in sin. And let me tell you first hand the latter comes with consequences. read more

Not because I didn't have words, but because it takes time to untangle the kind of emotional and spiritual damage that happens when a place disguises control as care. The North Carolina Boys Academy presents itself as a Christian, healing-centered program for young men. What it truly is -- for many of us -- is a place where fear is the primary tool, and love is used as a weapon. You're not brought in to be understood. You're brought in to be reshaped through shame, submission, and silence. Public shaming is routine -- tears, humiliation, even confessions are used as spectacles to enforce control. Your value is based on how well you fall in line, how little you question, and how completely you surrender your identity to the version they want you to become. If you resist -- emotionally, intellectually, spiritually -- you are met not with compassion, but with consequences. Isolation. Suspension of privileges. Spiritual guilt-tripping masked as "discipline." The fear of "messing up" becomes constant, and the cost of honesty is often punishment. They claim to be about transformation through faith, but what they model is spiritual manipulation. Scripture is used not to inspire or restore, but to coerce obedience. That leaving the program, or even thinking differently, is turning your back on redemption. Worst of all -- they call it love. They use that word often. But love doesn't isolate you from your family. Love doesn't threaten your safety when you speak your truth. Love doesn't teach you to hide your emotions to survive. There are a many kind staff member, but even they were caught in a system that rewards conformity over character. This place is built to mold, not to understand. To subdue, not to empower. There's a cult-like energy here -- one masked behind Christian language and therapeutic jargon. You're cut off from the outside world. Letters are monitored. Phone calls, if they happen, are scripted. Relationships with family are micromanaged. You learn quickly that survival depends on being who they want you to be, not who you actually are. Public shaming is common -- from having your mistakes read aloud in front of others to being made to confess "sins" in humiliating group settings. You are broken down, piece by piece, and then rebuilt into a version of yourself that fits their ideal: obedient, guilt-ridden, silenced. If you resist -- even inwardly -- there are consequences. Loss of food privileges, solitary time, emotional freezing, or spiritual guilt-tripping disguised as "prayer counseling." And what's perhaps most horrifying is how convincingly it all wears the costume of love. Hugs, "I'm proud of you" speeches, smiles and "we care about you" moments -- all tangled in a system that crushes individual identity, enforces silence, and deeply damages a young person's ability to trust others, trust themselves, or trust God. If you're a parent reading this, desperate for help -- I understand that desperation. But this is not the place where true healing happens. It's where fear learns to wear a smile. The setting is beautiful on Lake Hickory. The staff is dedicated and full of integrity. This program is trustworthy and the leadership is doing the hard work of caring for the young men in our society who are struggling the most. My brother was sent here several years ago. He has suffered severe PTSD from this program. Denied him of basic needs like food, water, utensils, etc. He would be out in shackles and jumpsuits. This program is a complete money scheme. Most of the school credits don't transfer so it doesn't set up anyone for success. Avoid this program and seek actual therapy for your child instead. read more

I have many things to say about this place, and almost none of it is positive. Their idea of fixing kids isn't actually getting them the help that they need, but stripping them away from their basic rights. When you come into the program, they shave your head and put you into a literal jumpsuit and a tracker. This lasts for two weeks in which the student is required to write pages upon pages of work, with the blackmail of not being able to talk or even being able to get their own food until the two weeks and the writing assignments are completed. The people at this program are not allowed to think for themselves, and if you dare say anything against the executive director or his wife about the mistreatment of this place, then you may find yourself in a variety of punishments including not being able to talk to anybody for weeks on end, being put back into the jumpsuit, and receiving verbal abuse during the morning "devotions." Not only this, but the students there are basically forced into religion, and if they choose not to be a Christian they can expect verbal harassment from the executive director, and many writing assignments along with it to "fix you." The program consistently lies about success rates, and a lot of the "5 star reviews" are actually written biasly and by staff members. In fact, they have testimonials on there from people who didn't even graduate the program! I just hate to see this program receive false glory after seeing the abuse that the executive director frequently inflicts upon the students who literally cannot defend themselves. Another thing that this program likes to do is manipulate your emotions to try to get whatever they can out of you. Multiple times the executive director trash talked my parents and blackmailed me in an attempt to get me to stay for an "internship," in which it pretty much is just free labor. In fact, during the work that I was given at my time there, multiple times they violated many safety codes because they cared more about saving money than the safety of the students there. And lastly, you can expect that once the executive director has sapped all of the funds out of you that he can, that you will be tossed to the wind. There have been multiple people who have messed up with substances and instead of giving them actual help, they instead kick them out. But I thought that the whole point was to help people with "life controlling problems?" All in all, I would never recommend this place to anybody and you should definitely look elsewhere unless you intentionally want to bring your child through emotional abuse and brainwashing, and you have alot of money to spend, because without money your just an inconvenience to this place. read more
