Very nice instructor and offering a range of classes. The studio is very comfortable and airy (it's a loft). Super helpful to new students. I prefer not to interact with other people in classes because I don't like to be touched by strangers and they did some partner work, which I did not enjoy. But that's just me and we had the option not to partake in those poses/stretching, so just including as an fyi. Overall, I think this is a great place and I'll be back. read more

I love yoga and feel if everyone did yoga, we'd have a happier, more peaceful world. Okay, I'll get off my soap box and just review the classes. I've taken both Yin and Gentle Yoga here from husband and wife team Linda and Howard. The two of them combined have over 40 years of yoga instruction experience. If you don't know much about different yoga types, yin is about longer held postures that will target joints, connective tissue, and meridians, while Gentle Yoga is about medium-length deep stretches and working on the breath. The classes were great; as I sit in front of a computer all day, yoga is necessary to stretch out the many kinks and tight areas. Both teachers were easy to follow and are good about checking students for proper posture and positions. They also teach Hatha and Vinyasa, Vinyasa Flow. If you are new to yoga or a veteran yogi, you'll enjoy the atmosphere and the classes here. I've heard great things about the Level 1 Taiji/QiGong Movement and Self Healing classes as well, taught here by Geoff on Saturday mornings, a local integrative counselor. I just haven't taken them yet to comment, but wanted to mention them for anyone interested in this type of movement and healing modality. Namaste! read more

There is a sense of calm and beauty as soon as you enter North Coast Yoga studio. I love the classes, they are a perfect balance of gentleness and challenge. Both Linda and Howard are excellent teachers. They are knowledgeable and caring. Every lesson is like taking a cleansing bath for the body and soul. I highly recommend this yoga studio. read more

Specialties

We are interested in facilitating self awareness and the ability to stretch and strengthen to align the body and expand the mind. Increased freedom of movement, deeper breathing, and relaxation create a relaxed vitality and the ability to calm the mind. Students have been coming to our classes for decades. We offer Hatha, gentle, and yin yoga as well as workshops in restorative yoga, resonant movement, and partner workshops.

History

Established in 1985.

Linda Hjortshoj joined a Yoga class in the early 1980's hoping to treat some minor back pain. What she discovered was the opening of a world of possibilities that she had been waiting to find. She studied with many international teachers for 7 years and continues to explore and study other approaches to the body/mind. Her husband, Howard Bartle, joined her as a teacher in 1998 and Frank Abbott began teaching a Yin Yoga class in 2009. She is interested in body learning to help people to help themselves.

If you're not into being pushed and challenged then don't go. The Instructor is great at making sure you are in the correct positions while continuing to urge the other students to continue holding the pose. And boy, when they say hot, they mean HOT! We'll be 2 poses in and I'll already be sweating!! I didn't know you're knee caps could sweat! The first class I went to was tough. I was exhausted when I got home. But this second class was great. I did better in some of the poses and felt really confident when I left. Even if you have a image issue, do yourself a favor and invest in yoga shorts and light tank top. You'll thank me later. I don't know how people wear capris in there... its just too hot. The other students are all very friendly and super encouraging. The first class is tough, but it's worth it! I can't wait to go back on Wednesday!

After attending one of his classes I've felt the most peace and inner freedom that I've ever felt in my life. It was seriously one of the most relaxing things I've ever done -- I can have an incredibly stressful day, come here and leave feeling a little lighter and happier. ILY's classes encourage you to challenge yourself, yet find your own practice and they don't encourage their students to all "look the same." Their instructors recognize that every individual has different strengths and weaknesses and deplore how yoga magazines sometimes emphasize there's a "right and only way" to do a posture. Practically every class will be imbued with a tinge of spiritual wisdom, so if that's not your thing -- you may get a little turned off. I encourage you to stick with it and just take it for what it is. They are just words which may resonate with you or they may not. The practice is great. Best studio in Syracuse -- hands down. In fact, every time I visit my parents in Syracuse I make an effort to go to a class. My only wish is they would have such compassionate and knowledgeable instructors who are able to blend theory with practice so perfectly in every city.

The beach area is enclosed into a square, guarded by at least three lifeguards.
