That said, when I went to renew my passport, the staff did not fill me with confidence that they knew what they were doing. I had all my forms ready, and they said I'd have to make an appointment with the Department of Immigration first. Given this was an Australian Passport renewal, I thought that was rather odd. Anyway, I won't bore you with the details: the important thing for anyone to know about a Post Office: this one is not too busy! Bonza.

Packaging supplies, collectible coins and stamps, magnets, etc. can all be purchased on site. Handy for tourists staying in the vicinity, there are mailboxes outside with reliable pickup times. Basically they have centralised the front-facing functions of a number of agencies so you're not traipsing all over town on your State Government related errands. I was able to renew my licence, replace my E-Tag and request a copy of my Birth Certificate, all in one go. It seems like most people still come here mostly for RTA services (I know I should say RMS but I don't cope well with change). Being the Government, of course they will never manage to combine all their process so I did have to run my bank card through the machine three times to pay for all this but still I appreciate the saving of my Tax-Payer dollars that this amalgamation will eventually achieve. The staff are clearly KPI'd on smiles which overall made for quite a pleasant bureaucratic experience.

This is an absolutely terrific hike along the coast between Rose Bay and Watsons Bay (or you can…read moreexpand it way way out and start at the Botanic Gardens by Circular Quay). Catch the ferry to either end and walk in either direction. The views back to the city and the Harbour Bridge and Opera House are nothing short of spectacular! and you'll probably see lizards like water dragons and blue tongues along the way. There are easily a half-dozen places to swim, with the highlight probably Parsley Bay and its suspension bridge (although the leg of the trip there from Nielsen Park, through the residential streets of Vaucluse, is somewhat surreal). We stopped for a swim at Nielsen Park (which has shark nets if you're worried about such things) and it was so wonderful it made me very grateful that I live in a city with such a clean harbour. My international friend was pleased that you can stretch out on the grass and avoid getting covered in sand. The recommended time for the walk is 4.5 hours but I think that's pretty generous and definitely allows for lazy hiking and swimming - the Hermitage Foreshore part is the most strenuous, and even then it only has gentle inclines. You don't need hiking boots or any special gear either - I've done it in battered Chucks. In Watsons Bay check out the Gap, and Camp Cove (arguably the most beautiful beach in Sydney), and maybe treat yourself to a fish dinner at Doyle's. If the queue for the ferry back to the city is too long (expect an hour wait on nice days during school holidays) you can always get the bus (although if it goes via Bondi expect an equally horrendous crawl to the Junction), or if you walk in reverse and finish at the Rose Bay end you can walk a bit further past Double Bay and get the train from Edgecliff. On a warm summer's day this is really the perfect Sydney outing!
