The staff at this school is remarkable not only because of their depth of knowledge on various subject, but because of the fresh approach that they take to education and the compassion that they show their students. It was my experience that the teachers at Northside didn't punch out as soon as the bell rang (or the music played). As for the overall environment, this school has always been extremely progressive in it's approach to the arts and it's dedication to pursuing them. The open mics used to be something of legendary quality for Chicago high school students, and that tradition has been carried on by the annual arts festival the school presents. I found myself completely prepared for college, but more importantly, completely prepared to go after the things in life I wanted to explore personally and artistically. Northside always treated me more like a human than a statistic, which is rare in the CPS. If I ever made the mistake of procreating, I'd be sending my kid here.

Northside College Prep is an excellent and rather unusual high school. It's a Chicago public…read moreschool, with selective enrollment. Students must apply, have a great academic record, and score very well on an entrance exam in order to be accepted. All academic classes are taught at the honors or AP level, which provides the challenge needed by motivated students. My daughter is a freshman here, and so far I've been very impressed with the curriculum, faculty, and teaching methods. The schedule resembles that of a university: each academic class meets twice a week. Every Wednesday is dedicated to an alternative learning program called "Colloquium" which gives students an opportunity to sample a variety of subjects. The administration is well organized and supportive of the staff. In addition, there are very strong parent organizations that contribute to the life and health of the school community. If you know of an academically gifted grade school student, I would highly recommend that you consider NCP when evaluating high schools.

Don't. Just don't. I know you're excited because it has "magnet school" in the name, and we were…read moretoo, but we've learned the hard way that IAMS is a deeply dysfunctional place. CPS knows this is a troubled school, and goes to great lengths to hide it (Google the Block Club Chicago articles about IAMS from 2021 to see what I'm talking about). Their LSC just held a no confidence vote in their 4th principal in 8 years, after the last one was abruptly "reassigned" to the central office in the middle of the year. This place is chaotically disorganized and growing steadily more dangerous (one "soft" lockdown so far this year). Communication is poor, grammatically incorrect and/or entirely in Spanish, despite their bilingual mission. If your child is not Latino, they WILL suffer harassment and discrimination. Teachers' kids are allowed to bully others with impunity, and appear to be exempt from the rules. Administrators actively protect bullies and retaliate against parents who advocate for their children. IAMS will boast about its parent involvement, but in reality it is run by a small cabal of *very extra* parents, and if you're not among them, you and your child are second-class citizens. There are some excellent teachers there, as well a few really terrible ones. I have witnessed a teacher shouting and using sarcasm at a class of 4th graders. Very few people seem happy to be there. Add the Cubs traffic to all this, and it's nowhere near worth it. Avoid at all costs.

Many Chicago Public Schools claim to be 50/50 English and Spanish, but Inter-American is one of the few schools actually doing it. If you want your student to be fluent in English and Spanish, send your students here PK-8. I teach an Enrichment class at Inter-American to help students get into top high schools. Every year, students graduate Inter-American and go on to attend schools like UChicago Lab, Latin, Parker, Northside, Whitney Young etc. I would say the most popular high school for IAMS students is Lane Tech- a selective enrollment high school at Addison & Western. My favorite part of IAMS is our commitment to social justice. Students learn to respect different cultures from a young age. Students learn tone proud of their heritage and to value other heritages. Great school in a safe area.

Adding to that, there is at least 1 fight in 2 months. 2. DISGUSTING Boys bathrooms. The boys bathrooms are usually STICKY on the floor, and pee all over the seat. Occasionally, the boy's bathrooms get flooded. Once, I saw poop on the freaking toilet seat. 3. Ok, but this is a good one. There are a nice and friendly group of kids usually in the school. The third graders are nice, the fourth graders know what they're doing, and the fifth graders are amazing. I have good friends in all grades, and it is ok. 4. Lastly, strict teachers. Usually, teachers can be extremely flexible, including substitute teachers. But, there's some strict teachers that give out HARD discipline. I understand that they're trying to prepare us for the next grade, but they need to just chill out a bit. That is my honest review on this school.

If you have a person in your grade with the same first name get ready for a crappy experience. You will get called to the office by mistake, You get absent if that student is absent. The teachers have this crappy rule where if you go to the bathroom 2 times thats it, You can't leave the room anymore. You may see the signs like "No bully zone" but thats just to trick you into believing they care. If you get bullied on the bus apparently "They can't do anything, Its outside of school". I grew up here with my cousin, me, and my cousin will go to the same school. We were actually partners for our concert. This school is not a bad school to send your kid.
