They give instruction, providing the email address of the library so I can send what I need to be copied from my phone to the library email. It's very convenient and economical too. I don't like the cost of ink in the store nor the mess so I don't have to deal with any of that unpleasantness. I just visit my friendly library folk, pay 20 cents per copy, et voila, call it done. It's an absolute pleasure coming here because the folks that work here seem interested and genuinely want to help and are exemplary in customer service. If all staff at other businesses could conduct themselves in this manner, the world would be a more productive place. As far as I could tell, the building was actually built to be a library but it looks more like a house built with upstart new money to impress the neighbors. There are anchoring fireplaces at either side room off the rotunda, both with artwork above them. One is for adults, while the other is clearly marked as a teens area. The check-out desk provided prompt attention and service, and there are shelves of full of books and media. It was also rather busy with people coming in and out consistently, and great hours. Being open until five on a Saturday is amazingly convenient.

Our daughter's first teachers were here during Busy Bee's play/learn group and learned so much. We are so grateful for that experience. Many interesting and fun programs over the years from craft projects to fantastic performances. The staff are amazing humans who put 100% into everything they do, not just for the kids, but the whole family. Very knowledgeable and supportive. Great books of every kind, including tough subjects and how to talk to kids about anything: bullying or bodies or big life changes. The adults area is great and I have enjoyed taking my laptop and doing quiet work by the enormous windows at the provided desks- that have outlets! One of the…read more oldest The present Durham Library building has been around since about 1901. An pretty old building but the areas previously libraries have been around for much longer. In fact the first Durham Library, a collection of books of around 5,000 or so, started way back in 1733. This is only two years after Ben Franklin started the famous Philadelphia Library. The present library has all the modern conveniences you would expect in an efficient library like computers, audio books, free Wi-Fi and even self-check out. However it also retains history and the cool ambiance of a historic library. A great combination. As you navigate through the books and computers you will see all sorts of cool and historic things like old quilts, pictures and relics of a much older time. It manages to achieve this in a very aesthetic and pleasant manner, everything just blends together in a extremely relaxed way. Of course the library has very friendly and useful librarians and lots of programs and events always going on and is a great place to do research, work or just relax and read a book. There are lots of libraries in the state of Connecticut. Some large, some small, some old and some new. Libraries and books are nothing new to Durham, but the juxtaposition of the modern and the historic is what makes the Durham Library a very special and cool place.

I frequent this library more than any other due to its proximity to my house. It's a pretty small…read morelibrary. But for the size it has an impressive DVD and music collection. You can find a lot of foreign and Criterion films and they are in good condition because they are hardly ever checked out. The CDs are an eclectic mix with indie as well as mainstream selections. The drawback to this library is that well, it's just hard to explain. Here's a list of some things that have happened to me recently: 1) A lady yelled obscenities at me for parking. Granted, she pulled in behind me but she was really unhappy that I parked in what she must have decided was "her" parking spot. 2) I held the door for a guy who then slowed down, didn't make any effort to take the door, and then stopped halfway through the doorway. 3.) The circulation clerk asked me if the classic movie I was checking out was a DVD or an audiobook. That's just shocking for a few different reasons. The building itself is attractive from the outside. It's probably one of the most visually interesting libraries I've seen in the state. Parking is ample but inconvenient. There is a small parking lot in front of the building that is usually filled. There are now a few spots on the street but you'll have a short walk, and a large parking lot in the back that is also a bit of a walk. There is also no reference librarian here. So if you want to put something on hold you'll just be directed to the catalog and told to do it yourself. But the DVD and music collections are awesome! That's reason enough to keep me going back.
