That trek is definitely not for the faint of heart -- it's an 11-mile round trip walk, making sure you have plenty of water and light snack or lunch. The tide should absolutely be taken into consideration before making the journey out there. It was a beautiful walk and such an interesting experience at the lighthouse. Hats off to all of the volunteers who dedicate their time to making that experience so special. Thank you for restoring and preserving the lighthouse for everyone to enjoy and experience. It truly made the trip unforgettable.

The nice part is you're next to the waters and there's sea shells and neat rocks to find along the way. Once you get to the lighthouse, you can go up to observe the views, and there's a bathroom. There's a flower-filled park and walkway from the road to the west, and a delightfully landscaped upper area surrounding the library itself. They also have a magazine dropoff so you can get rid of your old magazines here, which is kinda handy as well. It looks like there's a really good kid's section of books and plenty of books to fill the needs of the island, and I rather like the architecture of the building. Note that COVID has caused quite the commotion in the world of libraries, so you should probably call ahead to see if they have reopened, and what the protocol might be to get a book if you want one. I also am not sure about the requirements to check out books and get a membership.

Grandma and I like to come to Oak Harbor Library to pick out movies to watch together when I spend…read moreovernights with her. Sometimes she will have some items on hold and we will pick those up too. They also have an area with books for sale, which we have perused on occasion just for light reading or looking for presents. The movie section is located just inside the front door and movies are shelved by category. I find this convenient if not familiar with the movie titles, it gives at least a genre to start the search for a good watch. There are self check-out and worker check-out options. We typically go the self check-out way. A returns slot is located outside the main entrance to the library. Parking is available in both a larger lot and in a few quick visit (15 minutes or less style thing) spots. The quick visit spots have less of an incline between then and the entrance of the library, which is helpful if anyone in the visiting party has difficulty with inclines.

(I sit at a row of nine terminals right now...more are available nearby.) Oh...and free wi-fi. Yes, I do know that many public libraries offer free internet to patrons these days. Yes, I do know that Bill and Melinda Gates continue to encourage free internet access throughout the world. (Bless you, Mr. Rosewater, this little old librarian can't thank you enough.) But you must understand... The Port Townsend Public Library is now housed in its temporary quarters during the re-construction of its old Carnegie building. Books (and the aforementioned computers) are located *downstairs* at Mountain View Commons...which also houses the KPTZ radio station, the police station, the swimming pool and various other city-sponsored activities. And space at the library is still at a premium. The children's collection is located in a different building at the Commons. And the current library has a vaguely pungent smell of chlorine from the nearby swimming pool. And yet, and yet. The books are here. The librarians are here. The bank of computer terminals is right here. Waiting for those who need them. Oh...and the Port Townsend Public Library is still open seven days a week. Rain or shine. You can't get much better than that.

What a gem this library is!…read more Spacious, large and well-maintained, this establishment is very friendly and inviting. We arrived for story time but were a few minutes early and had the opportunity to peruse, participate in summer reading programs and talk to the staff, who were all very helpful. The story time was well-organized and easy to join for the first time. :) The children were engaged and the children's librarian offered helpful lessons on the alphabet and counting games/songs which reinforce what many children are learning either at preschool or at home.
