I am a parent of a student entering 6th Grade at Arizona School for the Arts. I work in Education…read moreand I talk to Teachers, Curriculum Directors, and Principals from all over the West Coast. And,I am married to a former teacher at ASA. I am passionate about this school. I will admit, I was suspect. I thought the parents who were so ecstic over the education offered at ASA might be a little off. It couldn't be that good. Really? My son started school with all the aprehensions of a 5th Grade student who knew very little about music, was active in sports and was very sad about leaving his friends behind. We (even he) chose this school because they had a strong emphasis on education and we expected the school to offer my son the opportunity to learn in an environment that was strict, supportive and creative. We were not disappointed. ASA was all that - and MORE! The academic teachers are inventive, collaborative, and very supportive. The arts teachers are music professionals and perform with and for the students and move them along in the curriculum with such finesse it's like they have private music lessons every day. And, the year was a success. My son was delighted with all his classes, especially his music classes with Monica Sauer Anthony. What a surprise to find him begging us to play his clarinet every evening before we had dinner or before we participted in a famly event. He loved the Science Curriculum, the hands-on activity and his teacher's passion for education. He worked hard in Language Arts and Social Studies and really showed off his new found maturity and knowledge during Presentation Week. And the lessons he learned in Life Skills class were really applicable and life changing. Then the performances at the end of the year were very remarkable and telling. I saw kids excelling in their musical expertise and showing off this success with such poise and confidence that I couldn't believe these were the same kids I met just 10 months prior at our summer welcome parties. The school does have a rigorous application process that leaves you on edge just wondering if your son or daughter will be permitted entry into this prestigious, blue ribbon school. The school doesn't tolerate any bullying and supports all types of students. And, the school is near Downtown Phoenix, so there are issues with the campus being spread across some streets, but those are being addressed quickly as they are building and expanding into new facilities that will offer a number of benefits for the ever-growing school. This school is really a dream. It's an educational opportunity I would recommend to any parent. I think my son would write a similiar recommendation!

The students are the ones losing out due to them shifting to be a very punitive type of campus. They have taken retaliatory actions against my children for me pointing out their hypocrisy and sadly the kids are only there because they want to be there whereases before I loved and supported the school and wanted them there, now i dont but they want to be there, so im trying to put up with it but many parents i talk to are disappointed with them as well, and new parents should be warned. They cut dozens of good teachers due to loss of students, but they seem to want to push more out!!!

She is an English teacher that has had an uncountable number of complaints lodged against her, from both students and teachers. She grades her essays based on her personal opinions, and grades fluctuate wildly based on her mood of the day. Her lessons are disjointed and extremely hard to follow, and she offers little to no clarification when asked about whatever vague and pointless concept she is rambling about. The material she presents to the class is often pulled from the internet. This wouldn't be terrible, if she would read the things before using them in class. She lacks the ability for confrontation, leading to her room being uncontrollable and loud. Her assignments are ridiculous, with extremely vague rubrics. It is better to brownnose and suck up to her than actually put effort into the class. I remain anonymous because if I were to make her angry, she'd find a reason to fail me. She should be, at the very least, placed under review. Sincerely, A dissatisfied junior

He's been able to advance to the math level that makes sense for him--he's a 7th grader in Algebra--and I really appreciate that they try to get kids into a math that makes sense for where they're at. I also think they have a very decent set of electives. For instance, he's taking Forensic Science--which he loves--and he's signed up for Public Speaking/Debate in the spring. The principal, Dr. Michael, is both inspiring and very hands on. The teachers are experienced, and they seem to enjoy teaching kids this age. My son had a concussion at one point, and literally every single teacher was incredibly understanding and gave him significant time to recover and get caught up. We were very grateful. It's worth noting: to limit opportunities for bullying and misbehavior, the time between classes is tight. Middle schoolers are expected to take care of and speak up for themselves. So if someone needs water, they should bring a water bottle and fill it in the morning and at lunch. This means they have to step away from their friends for a hot second, but they figure it out pretty quickly. All in all, my son is getting a great academic education and he's learning to manage his time and speak up for himself with teachers. I'm very pleased with his experience and growth thus far! Please note: our experience is with CGP, math and electives.

The NJHS program is wonderful thanks to Dr. Slamowitz, who goes above and beyond for the kids. She also teaches Forensics, which has been one of the highlights of my son's day. While the class is definitely challenging, he's developed a real passion for forensic science because of her engaging and inspiring teaching style. He even spends hours outside of school studying it on his own! The gifted program has been such a blessing--Ms. Wilson is so kind and supportive, and Ms. Holland makes learning both fun and meaningful. The front desk staff are always welcoming, quick to help, and truly make you feel part of the community. The new Resource Officer is fantastic--always on top of things and always with a smile. My son especially loves accelerated math with Ms. Clasby. He says she's one of the best math teachers he's ever had and really enjoys her teaching style. Of course, no school is perfect, but IMS is full of caring teachers and staff who work hard to make it a great place for students to learn and grow.

The director and his other teachers are a huge reason why he has opened up so much socially. They are kind, compassionate and caring and always have fun and educational activities planned. They do a great job of keeping parents in the loop by sending home work and monthly newsletters with pictures of the previous months activities. The worst high school I've ever seen, and I whole-heartedly regret sending one of my children there. Any other school is a better option compared to this. I've seen multiple videos of students selling marijuana, mushrooms, and nicotine (products) in classes and the teachers are completely oblivious. Forcing every student to have a Chromebook with spyware on them, even if they had their own computers, was incredibly stupid. My child now had to carry around an extra computer constantly... Teacher stole and refused to give a fidget toy to my child, and then got mad at them when they couldn't concentrate anymore... He has diagnosed ADHD. From what I've heard and photos I've seen, the entire campus is extremely unsanitary and the janitors don't do anything about it. Feces covering the walls and floors, litter everywhere. School will refuse to give children lunch if they're just a few dollars under, letting them be hungry for no reason. Won't let students get food off campus, regardless of how old they are. Even the food they do serve is extremely low quality and unhealthy. There's been at least 2 instances (That are proven and I've heard of/seen videos of) of teachers physically assaulting students. They're lucky it wasn't my child or they wouldn't have made it home that day. They once closed down the whole school because a kid jumped over a gate that should've been opened at the time, because they had a Chromebook charger (that they forced them to have) and thought it was a gun. Multiple armed police were then sent to "evacuate" random classrooms... which consisted of pointing a gun at innocent children and screaming at them. Besides a few anomalies, the entire staff here is stuck up and power hungry. They're always on some power trip wanting to needlessly punish and harass students that are completely innocent and even lie to us about things that have happened. My child's friend had a situation where they sent an email home lying about things the student did in an interaction, but the student secretly recorded the entire thing. The teachers and staff love to exaggerate and make up fake details about every little thing in order to feel better about it their sad life as an underpaid employee that probably just got the job because they like telling people what to do...

Despite the team at this school seeing and hearing the fear in her voice (she couldn't breath...she was in horror and terrified), they refused to switch her out of the class with a bully. Mind you, this school has kids in sections all day. You are with the same group all day. Instead of switching her out of class, they insisted for a month, that forcing her to go to class would help. After 9 days of my daughter in horror of sitting in class all day with this child, I encouraged her to go (per their request). Day one of returning, this bully would not leave my daughter alone and shoved her. The team there says it never happened. They claimed to review cameras and that this never happened. This happened to other parents, and they refuse to provide evidence for parents to see. Meanwhile I have been able to provide a steady stream of evidence to the school, and they claim it's false. The PD has also shared this school has been made aware of this issue from a handful of parents. I've never heard my daughter cry in such fear before. Since they still refused to switch her out of the class, I brought her in so they can face her so they can say to her face (hyperventilating, crying and in terror) and say to her face that she is "lying". They all said they were "busy" twice while I waited. Not one person in their large leadership team could come out. This school took 30 days of inaction and has accused my child and my family of lying. This experience has been beyond traumatic for our child and our family. I am very disappointed in Great Hearts with how this has been handled. The leadership has been rude and condescending during this whole experience. I am telling everyone I know to avoid Great Hearts. They do not stand by their mission and values. Avoid this school at all costs.
