Firstly, this is such a beautiful building! It is such a lovely shape and that grey and black paint! You might never have even noticed this building, somehow it gets forgotten on this busy road and I guess most people don't need a timber shop very often- which is a shame because it's a real pleasure going into this place. It smells wonderful for one thing, and you can sense the possibility around you in all the bits of wood. There are two floors and they hold pretty much every type of wood you could need as well as ready made doors, windows, shutters and all manner of beautiful moldings and ornate wooden fixtures. North Road Timber is a buildingworks, DIY, or just plain timber supplier, operating from an unlikely location in the dead centre of the North Laines. Recently, our banisters became a casualty at the hands of a particularly raucous party. As the smoke and debris cleared, it became apparent that we'd lost five of them, which we later found, irreparably splintered and bust, on the floor. Not being defeatists, and having evening jobs that allowed for a lot of time in the days, me and my flatmate decided to build some replacements. We picked up some glue and nails from Dockerill's hardware shop and headed down the road to North Road Timber for our wood. When we arrived the staff were intensely involved in a conversation about timber, which I chose to view as reassuring. When we got their attention, they were helpful, and didn't mind taking some time aside to discuss with us the various merits and shortcomings of different types and thicknesses of wood for use as banisters. We walked out with enough wood for eight banisters for just over a fiver. Don't be fooled into thinking that banisters are the beginning and end of the possibilities that this shop has to offer though: two floors of several different timbers, in various states of prepreparation and prefabrication, from raw wood to already formed mantelpieces, and other fixtures. Also, it's worth mentioning that the place smells great. While it's large for a premises on the North Laines, it's quite small for a building materials supply shop, and so is limited in its capacity and range. I encountered North Road Timber as I was trying to take my rubbish to the bins while pushing my 3 month baby in the pram. They were entirely blocking the pavement with their van and when I asked if they could help by dropping my rubbish in the bin 6 feet from the back of their van the guy refused and told me to just leave it on the street. They point blank refused to help me and acted like I was being an inconvenience to them for wanting to get my buggy along the sidewalk. The attitude of these guys stinks, I would never hire them for a job given an alternative. read more

Overpriced and overly abrasive. We went in looking for a small piece of wood to repair a bench. The older woman who served us was curt, unhelpful, and told us three times that we would have to have the piece cut to size (ie trimmed to length), despite us saying we were happy to do so ourselves. The cost for this single-cut service would be £5. We asked if there was an offcuts box. She just gestured to the corner and looked away. We found a suitably sized piece of wood and were charged £2.50 for it. This is twice the price you'd pay elsewhere for a full length of sawn, treated wood. We try our best to support local businesses and don't mind paying a bit more to do so. But when their staff are rude, unhelpful and seriously overpriced, we go elsewhere. I suggest you don't spoil your day with the negative energy of this shop. Abrasive service, slow and expensive. I went in to order a high security door off the shelf and paid for it. My own carpenter went in personally and took in the measurements. Three weeks passed with no contact - I called them to follow up and they said they had lost the measurements altogether (although my carpenter had been in twice). Another week later, they recovered the measurements (on their order form) and told me the door I paid for weeks ago is not made to measure and I should have known this (despite selecting the door in person in the store). They begrudingly offered to make it anyway and it has now been OVER 10 WEEKS! 'Terry' (the manager) is never there or on holidays when I have called. I've needed this high security door due to a spate of burglaries in my area and have gone without. Still no door. Terry will call me tomorrow... read more

I have known the owner of North Road Timber for many, many years and have supplied him with vehicles and in turn bought many of his products. The personal service and quality is totally different to what you get from a large chain. I have had a staircase made, built in wardrobes, flooring and much, much more. My husband is a very fussy builder and he has always had nothing but good to say about Terry, his team and the products they have supplied us. The worst service I've come across in Brighton! The older woman at the counter was rude, unhelpful and aggressive. I was the only person in the shop, so she couldn't even blame the fact that she was busy and stressed. Unfortunately I paid upfront and even though they hadn't started work, she refused to refund the job! So I'm now out of pocket! I live in Brighton and shop locally wherever possible, so will now find an alternative timber merchant. AVOID!!! read more

Well, I didn't find what I was looking for, unfortunately, that was my problem. However, I must comment on the fact that the only person serving in the shop was a lady perched behind the counter and she was very disinterested in me, she was sitting there doing what appeared to be nothing except gaze out the window, very reluctant to offer any help or attention to me. After approaching her and making my enquiry if they had a piece of wood in the size I was looking for, she mumbled a few words,shrugging her shoulders "try looking over there". .It was not busy, I was the only customer in the shop at the time. I didn't feel I would like to bother going back in there again, let alone expect any assistance.
