It is convenient that there is a post office here, as well as a massive Coles supermarket. It is small and is designed as a great get in and get out type of establishment. Sorry, not the type of establishment to make a day out of it clothes shopping. Leichhardt Marketplace is slightly better suited for this purpose, although Broadway would be better for that. A great place to buy those necessities, as well as a great vitamin store and butchery. Also their cafe right near Coles is great for a long lunch and a quality coffee if you need an immediate pit stop, and perhaps you wish to give outside Norton Street and the Italian Forum a bit of a breather. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare here, depending on when you come so it can be a little like a lucky dip; although if you have to you can always park at the nearby Italian Forum. Simple is something that is best for those busy professionals who want to get in and get out as quickly as possible. Not the type of shopping centre for socialising and entertainment.

Many consider it the other way round, and they would be amazed to hear that I felt this way. But I guess I've always just gone to this centre for my shopping needs. Sure it has less in the way of boutique shops and there's only one main supermarket/department store in it compared to Marketplace's three, but who wants to go to a massive shopping centre when all you need are a few things from Coles? Norton Plaza comes equipped with everything you could hope to need from a shopping centre; a chemist, seafood, a butcher, clothes shops, fruit shops, cafes, it even has it's a pub upstairs. It may not be as grandiose as some shopping centres, but sometimes the last thing you want is grandiose and with two hours free parking, a quick trip to Norton Plaza trumps a long shopping day anywhere else.

There are numerous decorations, wall hangings, vases, washing agents, wrapping paper, cards, children books and glasses for any occasion. Everytime I walk in I pick up something useful. It is one of those stores you look in first before going to the speciality stores to pay for a similar object three times the price.

Every second Sunday of the month, Kirribilli Market shows up at Milsons Point. It's next to the…read moretrain station and under the bridge. It's free to walk around and shop. I went one time and saw mostly handmade crafts and trinkets. There was even a vendor selling visors for dogs. The memorable one for me was Lunar Crafts because her crochet work was so good. There are a handful coffee and food vendors but not much to get full. On the green there were what looked like to me people selling their closets. A lot of signs read "need everything gone" and "buy 5 for $5". They had mostly clothes but also shoes. It's fun to walk around and get views of the Anzac bridge, the Sydney harbor bridge, and the Opera House. Luna Park is not too far away. Parking - free and paid parking on the street.

If you get hungry, there are tons of food vendors. Personally, I have only had the gozleme, which I quite enjoyed. A Turkish concoction which can only be described as a spinach Taco Bell Crunchwrap with lemon on top. I actually planned my vacations so that I could be here on the fourth Saturday of the month -- while both living in Sydney and visiting. I believe they have an extra market in December (or maybe they move the date?). It also happens to be located in one of the more picturesque spots in Sydney, great view of the Harbour Bridge! Anyway, it is conveniently located next to the Kirribilli train station and once you're done, there are tons of cafes to check out, grab a flat white and admire your wares.

But unlike in LA where they are not frequented, Market City was definitely hopping on a Friday afternoon. The vast majority of retail stores are Far East Asian (Chinese and Korean). There are grocery stores located in the bottom floor, along with beauty stores. There are also stand alone carts selling various knick knacks. It was worthwhile perusing them, and my brother ended up buying quite a few things.

Traditionally it was called the Saint Vincent de Paul…read moreOpportunity Shops but now with the change of name and the shops popping up all over the place people are quite familiar with the set up. It really depends on what suburb you are in with what you will find. The Mosman Vinnies is quite expensive but then again I do love their pre loved English grocery and silver. Some of the stock would be found in Antique shops. All the goods are donated and the proceeds go to the Catholic Church and the outreach to the Community. The staff are mostly volunteers. The poor fellow on the counter yesterday was probably in his mid 80s and got a little flustered with the cash register. The younger man came from out the back to help him. It was a lovely thing to see. He showed great respect to the older volunteer. My heart warms at this time of Christmas when I see people kind to one another. We all can learn to be patient in a place like this. I believe the shops exist to help others. Vinnies are all over the place but this one is always a pleasure to walk into.
