Great independent music or record stores are getting harder to find. It often will be in a college town when you come across it. North Street Records is in such a town. Hard to find records and other artifacts. The staff certainly knows a lot about what they have, and will help find something. As in places like this, the music is the main thing of course. It has a lot to look through. They, as the name implies, specialize in vinyl. Great place to find more popular artists. Or more obscure. Also despite the name they also have other forms of music such as CDs. These like the records also are obsolete so might as well have these. Has a big collection of new and old items. It seems most people come in and just look around, but some people actually buy something. The main thing is the vinyl. read more

I talked with Jeff. He's a really knowledgeable cool human. I felt he offered fair prices for the records I brought in...my childhood memories. He's honest with you. Which I find commendable. He is responsible in recycling, reusing, up-cycling records that can't be used anymore. I had a really great experience. I do need to say the I know nothing about records...but I can imagine he has an amazing selection. read more

What can I say, we stopped here the day after the Megadeth concert and ran into Jim who just made our experience special. Right away he greeted us and asked about the show, I told him we were in for my son's birthday and he took time to talk to my son and wish him well. Great atmosphere, tons of cool stuff, he even turned me on to a new band and kept playing the music we liked while we shopped. We live outside of Chicago about a 2hrs drive and I will definitely make a trip back, well worth a stop if your in the area a vintage record shop experience at its best. read more

A very impressive group of people here. I didn't hang out and talk too long but it's clear they know music history and are still staying on top of the new vinyl trend as well. I also enjoyed all the old antique stuff along with some cool bowls made from used vinyl records. Nice and fun selection. This is a great stop to make as you pass BloNo and it's easy to spend an hour or two at the counter service restaurants and locally owned unique shops within this two block Uptown area. Don't pass through Bloomington-Normal without stopping in to North Street Records. A truly one-of-a-kind used vinyl record store staffed by some of the most knowledgeable music and vinyl enthusiasts I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I discovered this store 7 years ago when my son was a freshman at ISU. Rob, Jeff and Jim are tremendously helpful in locating what you are looking for, and the customer service, well that has and always will be top notch. I place orders for record supplies and they are kind enough to bring them to the Midwest Record Collectors Show for me. This is the record store Reverberation Records wish it could be. Great staff, friendly as hell, open on time, and even light your joint for you. Jeff and Rob are class acts; total gentlemen. Along with that, they have an encyclopedic knowledge of vinyl and what sounds the best. Just a good vibe, great selection, great people. I'll pay an extra few bucks to just support these guys, but that's not necessary as their prices are nice. read more

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that alot of my musical taste was forged by records bought from Mother Murphy's (Stiff Little Fingers, The Descendents, The Jam, The Misfits, and on and on) as suggested by Jeff Wilson et al, who now run North Street. These guys have been mainstays on the B/N punk rock/hardcore/garage scene forever, and for that I'm thankful. This crew has been involved with shows, and have worked at record shops ever since I started buying LPs, and the same cast are currently running North Street records. North Street is a cool little shop, where I always manage to find something I'm after. Spend a few minutes talking with Jeff and the boys about whatever bands happen to be your favorites, and you'll see how seriously serious these guys are about music. Best record store in town. Used, new lps, cds, tapes eight tracks, stereo equipment, posters, shirts, memorabilia and wouldnt be surprised if they had good reel to reels hidden somewhere. Mostly rock, oldies ,pop, jazz, blues, punk, metal and everything in between. No hipsters or people taking photos of themselves taking a photo of a "vinyl". Although im sure hipsters are welcomed too. You can spend hours digging every corner of the store or just talking to the guys about music. It is like Cheers, the tv show but only in a record store. No snobinest, attitudes or negativity only good tunes and a couple of good dudes ready to help you. read more

This place is like heaven for vinyl geeks like me and my hubby. We shop here as often as we can and talk to Jeff about music, etc. He know his stuff and is always entertaining. The selection is as vast and he always has fun collectibles as well. I just left with some sweet Beatles figurines and bags full of records I couldnt find anywhere else, including old bootlegs. One of my favorite places to check out in Illinois. The atmosphere straight out of the movie it's awesome. They have everything from the obscure to the limited press. This is the last great record store! Staff are awesome, ask for Rob that man is a wizard for albums. CDs, LPs, 33's, original posters, you name it, they got it. Do you want original 1920s German jazz, they has it! Do you want a Limited pressing of live 1980s electrofusion post modern ska? They has it! The prices are low, the selection is incredible and the staff know everything about every time period of music. More than that and they travel to shows and conventions for trade buying and selling of limited , obscure, and much sought after collectible items. This place has served me well each time I've gone, but today went over and above. I was perusing the new arrivals and the gentleman in the front asked if I was looking for anything in particular. I gave him a title and he said he hadn't seen that record in a long while. I browsed a bit longer and purchased a couple records. As I was walking down the street to my car he came running out after me with a record in his hands. He found a copy of the album I told him I was looking for and ran after me. Now here is the kicker, he gave it to me for free. I would have gladly paid him for it, but customer service reigns supreme. Thanks again!! read more

I recently stopped in while passing through Normal, and didn't know what to expect based on this shop's website (which, in my opinion, makes it look like a small record shop that focuses only on classic rock or maybe country rock). I was quite surprised at their larger selection! Some interesting obscure finds in the rock area, but also very cool titles in jazz, soul/R&B and other genres. Most albums seem in really good shape, the prices are very reasonable, and the guy behind the counter was super friendly. I will definitely be back for return visits! read more
