I've visited NEIU a couple times, driven by many a time since I lived about there miles away. It's nicely compact for a university and it's nice that there's one on this side of the city since it can be hard or long to get to some of the others. NEIU is the university in the city that people forget about. I haven't been a student here, but I came for a training session. It was held on a Friday so it's possible that is why, but the parking was wide open the entire day. But what is annoying beyond measure is that in 2024 the school requires you to go into the parking office (which is near the public safety office, if you need to know) to purchase a hangtag permit. And if it's not bad enough that they don't have a pay box or app or something for this task, they only take cash. I happened to have cash on this visit--but that is exceedingly rare for me. And nope, no ATM in the office or maybe even nearby since the guy didn't point me to one. The other thing that surprised me is that whatever department is in charge of external events/ meetings is somewhat disorganized, because they hadn't told the organizers of the training where said training would be held until I asked the day before the event. That seems like a pretty basic thing for whatever department manages these things to let people know what room they're going to be in. They have some nice facilities, probably especially their less than five year old dorms. NEIU is a public university so the tuition will be more affordable than a lot of other universities around. They have a Cafe Descartes in their student center, which I hadn't heard of before but of which I am now a fan. They also host most of the Chicago Film Society events; I've been here for a few of them and they have nice facilities for the screenings. read more

nice classes, but some professors really are no help at all. its more of a commuter school so there are not that many events on or off campus so its boring. No sports teams either, just clubs. Don't recommend to stay at the nest as you have to pay for laundry room and the Desk Assistants/RA's are mean people who are two-faced. From experience one was talking about my dormmates (all 4 girls) negatively, to our faces sometimes too. I was charged almost $500 for the paint "damages" although it was small things due to my lights and posters. I painted over them as well before leaving. The rest of the staff (janitors/maintenance) are overall nice people. read more

If you require any accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, I would strongly advise against attending this university. I was previously enrolled in their education program. My use of the text-to-speech function for note-taking, a reasonable accommodation, triggered an unreasonable backlash from the administration. An 89-year-old instructor mistakenly believed I was video recording her, leading to a misunderstanding that escalated to the program director. The director had the audacity to suggest that "students with ADHD and Autism might not be suited for a career in education." When I filed a formal complaint with the dean about this remark, they expelled me from the program. My classes were listed as 'withdrawn' just two weeks before the end of the semester. I ultimately graduated from the history department, achieving a major with a 3.4 GPA (It had been my minor). Now, I work in higher education, with a significant focus on supporting students with disabilities. However, my greatest regret remains not pursuing legal action against NorthEaster University for the treatment I endured. If you're considering this university for anything education related avoid it like the plague. Even if you don't have a disability you won't be placed into a student teaching position until midway through the semester and won't receive any real guidance. read more

I am a student and have been for nearly (get ready) 10 years. Since I do take only 2-3 classes per sememster I am on the long term plan. I have to admit, I NEVER took out loans until this last semester and I am horrified at how this was handled. I applied MONTHS ago and still have not received my monies, so of course, I have to pay out of my pocket. Although at times the classes seem unfocused due to younger students who want to party all night and older such as myself, it gets crazy with the way the classes are handled. I must admit, I do love coming here but I live maybe 1 hour away on a good night. read more

My lady friend is currently atting this institution. She withdrew from a class and received a bill for not completing the course to a point. The bill came in the mail in May 2023. NEIU did not give her any amount of time to make payment arrangements. They sent the matter to a collections agency by the end of June. Tat is very mersinary of NEIu. Sending something to collections negatively impacts a person"s credit. NEIU could've handled this more professionally. This could have been handled in house. She called NEIU several times about the bill and no one explained the bill or offered any payment options. Not good for NEIU. read more

Northeastern is not Northwestern. But nor is it Truman College. You can get a good education here, but you probably won't be as challenged as you would be at a major university. On the other hand, you'll only pay about 10% of what you'd pay at Northwestern. Northeastern is kind of a blue collar university. Some of the students are older, some have families, many are working full time in addition to going to school. It is also the most ethnically diverse university in the Midwest. This cuts through a lot of the bullshit you find at other universities. On the flip side, a lot of kids who come here don't have great study skills, so this can slow down the classroom experience for everyone. I've been teaching part time at NEIU for the past 3 years, and I'm very impressed with the dedication and commitment of the faculty. The level of teaching is as high as Columbia, and since undergrads at a lot of the bigger schools tend to be taught by grad students, many of the students are actually getting a better education than they would at a place like DePaul. But it is definitely a no-frills education. read more

The financial aid office is a disaster. They told me for months I'd be eligible for a loan and then after more than 5 weeks in to the semester, much too far down the road to make any any changes in my schedule, they told me their staff made a major oversight and that they had misinformed me. Then they told me there was nothing they could do about it. I went in to that office upwards of 10 times and received confirmation over and over. After this happened, the office tried to cover up their mistake and ignored my emails. I received zero aid for a full course load. The administration, overall, is very dysfunctional. I was required to send my ACT scores to the school, which costs $60, and they lost them. The admissions office also lost my transcripts when I first applied, forcing me to send them again (which also costs money). The college of ed changed a pivotal due date halfway through the semester, to no benefit to students (probably because they are lazy and/or slow). I feel like I'm constantly putting out fires trying to maneuver this aspect of my experience here...& I continue to be surprised by how little is required in the actual classes; they are not challenging enough. This is the opposite experience I should be having. Also, I have to get approval to take undergraduate courses even though I already have a BFA. The system for enrolling does not recognize my transcripts. The staff in some departments are slow to help, which is risky during enrollment. I'm just left wondering what everyone is even doing. I thought about giving two stars instead of just one because two of my three teachers seem passionate and knowledgeable. (Even if one of them is very disorganized and forgetful) but i decided against it. That is how terrible my experience with admissions, advisors, and financial aid employees has been. This summer marks 1 year since I began working on my Masters degree at Northeastern. I transferred in from Concordia - River Forest. NEIU has a wonderful program for the field I'm studying at a fraction of the cost of Concordia, plus they are CACREP accredited (unlike Concordia). I entered the program at a time when my life had just spiraled into complete and utter chaos, which has continued throughout my time at NEIU. This made academics especially difficult at times, however, I always manage to get by. My first semester required getting acquainted with the campus, figuring out what was required of me from my department, and fighting to get unaccredited credits transferred. Anytime I needed questions answered, I would get bounced around to a different department. I have attended 4 different institutions during my academic journey, and they all seem consistently horrible with communication and getting you answers. Northeastern is no exception. Like any other University, there are great professors and there are not-so-great professors. If you have options for who to take, make sure you do your research; ask your peers who they would recommend and look online for information about professors to help you decide who you will get the best learning experience from. I cannot speak for all majors, but the education program here is well known. Overall, I'm grateful for getting a chance to continue my higher learning at this institution, but they definitely do need to work out some major kinks. read more

The only reason this university gets 3 stars is because of the professors I've had in the biology department. Almost every single one was incredibly invested in the future of their students, and this showed through a lot through the semesters. The SCSE (Student Center for Science Engagement) is also a huge saving grace of this university. It's a well-run and well-organized resource that helps students access research opportunities, STEM advising, pre-professional mentoring, tutoring, and so much more. Besides that, the university needs some serious work. The Financial Aid office is a complete joke, I've come extremely close to dropping out because of their disorganization and the bad attitude that the receptionists give every student that walks in. The company that the school is connected to for food services is also in dire need of some reminding that charging obscene amounts of money for really crappy food is ridiculous. read more

Main reason would be paying all this money just to get a shitty education from professors with horrible ideologies and not being able to learn any useful information towards my degree. As a student going in to receive their Bachelors degree in Marketing, I can say I have not retained much knowledge, and that alone is a huge issue. I have had the most miserable time trying to get admitted, enrolled and registered for classes at this school. I had an issue with my portal that someone didn't switch my account from inactive student to active student. I went to the enrollment center to speak with someone about it and I was so pleasantly surprised. I spoke with Rachel who has helped me before and she is an absolute doll. She helped me resolve the issue as pain-free as possible and really made me feel so comfortable. She was so thorough and was just a sweetheart. So although it was a mess trying to register, I could not have been more lucky to have rachel help me out! I seriously had to shout her out for all her help and taking more than a half hour to sit with me and figure it out. She even spoke to three different departments I believe! She needs a raise and is incredible! If you ever have issues y'all- ask for her! read more

Basically a poorly run community college with below average programs and horrible staff. Full disclosure, I have a solid frame of reference. I attended a community college many years ago, transferred to a major state university for my BA, then attended law school at yet another major university. I hold 2 advanced degrees from 2 different schools. I came to NEIU for a few classes that I felt would be helpful in my practice. I did not really want another degree. I held a 4.0 in all 4 classes. The courses were simple and the program director was a petty woman who thought adding busy work was equivalent to increasing the challenge. She had almost no idea what the real world is like. Every class was simply a repeat of the same exact content as the last. Nothing new was added. The faculty seemed to have a really hard time engaging students in meaningful projects or discussions. I recall assignments being duplicated almost every time. Different page number maybe, but same exact stuff. If I wasn't such an honest person, I could have easily submitted the same papers every semester and only changed 3-4 sentences. Quantity of reading does not equal quality. I felt like I was in community college. And fellow students were frankly low performers. Worst part is the staff. I owed a couple thousand for my last semester's tuition and set up a monthly payment arrangement. They repeatedly turned it over to collections despite me making timely payments. The accounts receivable lady speaks almost no English and is rude and incapable of communicating clearly. The AR office is just awful. Basically they violate fair debt collection laws and treat students like a burden to work with. Had I known they would violate agreements and be so dishonest, I would have paid the $2k in lump sum, but of course we all have a budget. End of the day, if I were 18 and looking for a a cheap degree and knew it didn't matter if I learned, I may pick NEIU. It served a purpose for me, but ultimately the college is the worst I've ever attended. I would recommend just about any other school if you have the option. Just plain out piss poor. read more

I'm a pretty huge fan of Northeastern for three primary reasons: 1) Cost - I attended community college for two years, paying out of pocket for the nonsense gen ed classes they force you to take. Northeastern wasn't that cheap, but I still graduated with only a small fraction of the student loan debt of many of my friends. 2) The Philosophy Department and the History Department - If you are planning to major in either of these subjects, Northeastern has some of the most challenging, interesting and engaging professors I have ever encountered. In addition to being excellent instructors, the professors genuinely care about their students. I found that if I reached out, almost all of the Northeastern professors were willing to go the extra mile to help me. 3) Location - I have lived in Chicago my entire life and I know that our public transportation is sub par. I loved being able to drive my car straight from work to school. I never paid for the student parking lot and if you allow enough time, there is generally street parking available. Some less pleasant things about the school: 1) The financial aid office is a mess. It is understaffed and they will not help you very much. In fact, my financial aid adviser LITERALLY did not speak English. I would advise speaking to current college students, filling out a FAFSA and then sorting out details with this disorganized menagerie. 2) Some classes are only offered in either Fall or Spring. That can be problematic when you are trying to graduate. read more

The education you can get at Northeastern, especially for the price, is fantastic. That being said, what you're saving in cost you are paying for with your life. The amount of years that the stress of dealing with the Universities bureaucratic nonsense and miles of red tape is ridiculous. The people who work for the University, especially in the Bursar's office, are absolute toads. The only thing worse than dealing with them is dealing with the touch-tone, automated registration system. That's right, at least one college in America still registers for class by phone. On the plus side, NEIU does offer small classes with fairly brilliant professors. There isn't much of a sense of community on campus, but that has to do with the school being a commuter school. If you're looking for diversity, NEIU has it. It is statistically one of the most diverse Universities in the country. The administration also tries to do nice things for students during the stress weeks and the end of a semester, like hiring masseuses to give free massages and ordering tons of pizza for passersby. Love this school so much I got my BA in Psychology from here and now I'm working on my MA in Gerontology. Love the professors and curriculum. The school also has this relaxed college feel without the college mess. Party school it is not. It's for those who really do value education. It's a commuter school for sure and but once you get here it feels like home. My favorite place is the lounge where I can sleep or work on my laptop. I also prefer the downstairs computer lab to the one on the second floor in LWH. In short, if you're looking for a no nonsense education in a diverse setting, NEIU is just the place for you. read more

I remember sitting in economics class one day when the professor was no joke teaching a pro socialism lecture and I am not talking Bernie Sanders but where people get food rations (equality in his eyes). An economics teacher that is pro socialism sounds like an oxymoron but not at this school. This was the point it hit me that I really messed up in my college choice! On a serious note. This school is not respected by chicago employers. Even with a high gpa, two internships and entrepreneurial experience I have had little luck getting interviews from traditionally applying. It is essential to do cold emailing/networking with numerous follow ups as the only shot at even getting the opportunity to interview for the good jobs with NEIU on resume. The career center is even more of a joke then the rest of the school. They have postings up for non professional jobs such as retail phone sales. I booked an interview prep session and they suggested I write down facts about me and questions for a cheat sheet to glance at during interviews. I went to interview prep with an outside company and they told me having to glance at a piece of paper makes it unnatural and is the worst thing to do. Honestly if it was up to me schools like NEIU would be defunded as they do not offer an in demand enough product (degree) to be worth the investment. I've got a love/hate relationship with Northeastern. The teaching staff - across the board, from gen ed classes to my higher level major classes - has been nothing short of amazing. Challenging, thought provoking and supportive. I simply can't rave about them enough to do them justice. There's a staggering amount of wisdom there, and they're sharing it with you! The administration and support staff is another story all together. Financial aid, transcripts, academic advising - good luck getting the help you need from the right people. Prepare to be frustrated and angry. Prepare to wait. Expect to be given wrong information. Whenever people stepped up to actually help or solve problems, they weren't the people responsible for solving them - I.E. not your own academic adviser, not your own financial aid adviser, or someone who's not even IN the dept in question. As if making it through college weren't hard enough academically, they seem destined to make it near impossible bureaucratically. read more

I've taken two classes from this university (chemistry, and a CS class). I enjoyed both classes. The professors were very effective and very helpful. Pros: 1. Very diversified school. Gives you the opportunity to meet interesting people. 2. Relatively cheap (compared to other schools) 3. Some really good professors who do NOT focus all their time in their research. This is a big problem at other schools. Cons: 1. They don't have the best computer setup. They don't upkeep their labs. Half the computers don't work right, and the lab staff is not very helpful. They need work on their computing department. 2.This school is in desperate need for web site where a study can manage their data. Very few cons for the school. Ahhhh, good ol' NEIU! I've been attending NEIU since Fall '06 and in all my time here, I can't say that I've ever loved the school as a whole. On the bright side, I've had some insightful professors here that have made the experience less dreadful. I just wish they would adjust their schedule for classes....according to mine. Take MWF classes here only if you must. The crowd is mostly incoming Freshman and sitting through those lectures with people interrupting can be obnoxious. Your best bet is evening classes, Tuesday / Thursday classes, or Saturday classes at El Centro (they're surprisingly great). This was my first semester taking Saturday classes and the class was full of engaging conversation, great teaching, great people and overall an awesome vibe. One of the best I've had here. Tuition isn't as bad as other schools but it isn't as cheap as many claim. The unnecessary fees that seem okay on your bill because they're only about $10 start to get bothersome when you realize that in the end you're being charged about $200-$300 of those mindless bullshit fees. Activity fee? I've yet to see an activity even remotely interesting here. There's no school pride and no sports teams that compete on a national level. If you're looking to get "the college experience"? Look elsewhere because after four years, I've yet to witness such a thing. The commute is also pretty bad. Traffic on Kimball / Pulaski / Foster is horrid for driving and CTA isn't that much better. The closest train is the Kimball Brown Line and that's still a far walking distance from the campus. The advisors are helpful. I've stuck with the same one throughout my time here and she's been helpful and flexible with her time. The school itself is nice if you're only taking classes in the FA building. The Science building is dark and those ramps are deathly. The CLS building (or Lech Walesa...WTF? It just went through a name change but I'll refer to it as CLS. It's a comfort thing. haha) is in need of a couple renovations but if you're coming here for Gen-Eds might as well get used to it because that's were most of your classes will be. I also wish the area around campus was more interesting. You don't have many options for food, entertainment, or general roaming. So bring a book and sit in the quad. Hopefully the weather won't completely shit on you. So after mainly complaining...why 3 stars, you ask? I'm still trying to figure it out myself. haha read more

As a student whose classroom experience has been predominantly 100-level (gen ed) classes, I'm going to present this review with the caveat that it could get better in the future. My first impressions of NEIU were that it was comparatively inexpensive and held the bar low for student admissions. Both of these are true, but after several months in the place I can tell you that neither point is an advantage. It's cheap, yes, but you only get what you pay for. The faculty here lacks focus and direction, and lectures meander into pointlessness far too often. It's easy to feel like you're sitting in adult day-care with the freshman lectures. Maybe I'm jaded because I'm seeing the tuition statements and not my parents, but I often feel amazed that I'm actually PAYING for this. Speaking of money - I advise any student attending NEIU to submit their student loan applications early. Like, half a year early. Trust me, you're not going to regret this. The financial aid office is, be it for staffing or whatever other reason, woefully unprepared to deal with the workload presented to them. For this reason it will take weeks, but more likely months to complete any loan processing. Let this be the single most important thing I can say in this review: get your financials in order as early as you possibly can. "Campus life" is pretty minimal. There are groups, clubs and a few token Greek establishments, but support for these is spread very thin. NEIU is a commuter school and the mentality of the student body seems to be, for the most part, to get in and get out with as little detour as possible. The campus itself isn't too bad. Some of the buildings are poorly planned for layout, but nothing is too awful. The surrounding neighborhood lacks much to do (eating, entertainment, etc) - but again, many students aren't looking for these things. Okay. So in conclusion, NEIU is better than Bert's College-O-Rama, but the term "higher learning" is applied here only with much generosity. University bureaucracy is a mess, but not much worse than that of other schools. Tuition is great but you may regret not having paid more for a better school elsewhere. Great school in the city. Most of the professors here care about your future and are there to help. The school over the years has gone a bit down hill. A lot of the areas that student have to do their homework in are quite dirty. The sidewalks have major cracks in them. In the winter the parking lot seems to be never showered. I think that the school needs to improve the upkeep of the area before starting a new project, like the housing on campus. read more

My original review was 5-star in 2008; since that time NEIU has shrunk down, way down. They have fewer teachers and more administrators. The classes are fewer and not adaptable to part-time or working students. Student options and participation isn't being encouraged. Northeastern's focus has changed from education to buildings. I went here for an HR degree. Didn't learn squat about entry level management skills so it was difficult to find a job with zero skills on my resume. Instead I was required to take all these social justice classes where I learned to hate white men, straight people, and learned to think like a victim. Waste of time and money. read more

The financial aid department is the reason that I had to withdraw from NEIU. Numerous errors were made on their part - losing my transcripts, telling me that my income information that I shared with them was incorrect, and more. The main office and advisor that I worked with were so rude, it's pretty astounding, especially considering this school needs more money. I'm so disappointed that NEIU didn't work out because it is an amazingly affordable and diverse school. Also, yes, the facility is pretty dirty. There are only a few clean areas for people to study, like the library and select areas in the student center. Have been jumping through hurdles the last 3 semesters. Verification and paperwork taking weeks at a time. I keep having to pay out of pocket for books and it's extremely expensive. Last semester my financial aid package wasn't ready till well after midterms. No sense of urgency. Very rude and slow moving receptionist with poor attitude. Takes 7-10 business days for anything to be cleared then they ask for something else. I really will finish out this semester and go to a more prestigious university with a more professional attitude. Its hard to sum up 6 years of attending this university into a review. Especially since ill be graduating in December. - To get the cons outta the way - Financial Aid is pretty bad (i was told that id be covered for classes, then later told they won't (i wish i saved that conversation to use on them), and theres usual blatant corruption once in a while in this university. Thats it. Everything else about this university has been very good to me. - Great professors (some can be boring but they do their job!), great and welcoming atmosphere, courses can either be very easy to very difficult, theres many activities going on always with clubs and the newly improved Northeastern Programming Board, always places to socialize, always ways to get involved with the school, good community, good amount of things to do on campus from going to the gym to reading a book in the library to enjoying games. The technology on campus is pretty updated and the campus has a sleek look. In terms of course content, I feel this campus has prepared me for the work life. With good connections met on campus, good grades, etc. I have been able to find a comfortable career that can prepare me for the future. In terms of cost, its actually pretty good compared to other universities. You become a part of something big here. You get an amazing deal and you can still get a good education. Yay! I'm a senior at Northeastern will graduate may of 2011 major Economics with a minor in Art. I transferred here last fall with my associates. I enjoy going here, the price is pretty much the same as other state schools in Illinois. A few things that would make the school that much better: The econ department why can't i take any 300 level classes during the day!! This is annoying, in general my schedule is all over the place because they just don't offer much verity in the class schedule or many classes in general. If they could work on this it would make the school sooo much better. Also, its a pain in the ass to get to but theirs really not much that can be done about that. I transferred to NEIU in August 2008. I had previously attended ISU and NIU. Hands down, NEIU is my favorite of the three schools. In brief summary NEIU is a school filled with a diverse group of traditional and non-traditional students. The class sizes are always comfortable and the professors are (for the most part) concerned about their students receiving a quality education. I have experienced a few bad apples, but what university does not have a few? The atmosphere in this school is second to none and I have made great friends here who I often feel comfort to see through my years here. We converse about basic, human concerns, down to the nitty-gritty and everything in between. As a full time student and worker, at one time, I was pleased to find that I could enroll in class that where considerate of student with a 40hr work week. I am in the Secondary Education program with a concentration in English and enjoy the course selection. read more

My experience here was decent, but nothing to brag about. Highlights for me Wide variety of psychology programs Cost efficient tuition Good teachers for the most part (If you look them up) Big parking lot Delayed payment for tuition (You don't need upfront cash) Bad experiences Really poor admission experiences. (They can be pretty slow to processing requests, which sometimes can effect your ability to register for class.) Poor explanation of school services. (I was pretty much thrown into the university without much clue of what I was doing, I had to seek out all of my help.) Not a wide variety of electives. (I had a lot of elective space, and I could hardly find many things that interested me, so I would end up taking random classes that were unhelpful just for the credits.) It's not a top dollar institution, nor is it a piece of trash. If the location is convenient and the price is right, go for it. For certain subjects, such as psychology, the school does offer greater opportunities than other majors, so make sure you keep in mind what the specialties are before applying. I don't regret going to Northeastern, but they could have done more to provide a better experience. read more

had some issues being able to pay my tuition. so I came to this office in order to get at least a payment plan set up since I was a new student and wasn't sure how things worked. spent almost an hour arguing with whoever was "helping" me. she said that I owed almost 300 more in fines for being a week late of payment. would not let me set up payment plans and when I asked her if I could do it online she just kept arguing. couple of days later, a collections company called and demanded I pay the bill. thanks for the help. lost an education here. The saying "you get what you pay for" has never been truer. Academics: It could be better. For the price, it's great. But if you want a quality education, I would suggest you look elsewhere. If you want any degree and you're desperate, look here. I've experienced a mixed bag of professors. I've seen some that really do care and others that don't care at all so it's all about your experience. Unfortunately, for me there's been more bad than good. Administration: Huge joke. Nobody knows anything no matter who you ask. If you're trying to get a question answered, good luck. You're better off trying to find the answer for yourself than wasting time. The staff really don't care whether or not you graduate. I've experienced the staff suddenly putting a deadline on a graduation change form (but nobody could tell me when the deadline was because it was just thought of that day) because they felt like they got too many forms. They'll absolutely give you the run around, emails will go unanswered, calls will go unanswered. And it seems like nobody actually works. Everybody always seems to be on vacation too. Who takes a vacation the first week of school. Campus Life: There is none. Overall: I would not recommend anybody to go here, if I knew what I know now, I wouldn't have wasted my time. I don't know even know if I'm going to get my degree despite finishing 120 credit hours because nobody else seems to know either. It is what you make of it. If you insist on going to this school, know that you might be here longer than you planned on being here because faulty administration and you may never get answers to your questions. The only reason it gets 2 stars and not 1 because it's cheap. (Not affordable, cheap.) Seriously, take your money elsewhere. read more

"I have had the privilege of taking some classes at this great learning institution. It offers classes in a wide variety of subjects. Whether you are taking business classes, or going for a degree in music, I highly recommend this school of higher learning. They have a very resourceful library and a bookstore on campus as well. read more

I've been here for over a year now and love my classes and the teachers but my experiences with the financial aid department have been a complete and utter nightmare so much to the point where I have to give the school 1 star. I might add that I'm supposedly on a full ride scholarship that's supposed to cover even my books (which it hasn't), and I understand that the school is having financial issues itself, but from how things are handled they almost come off as arbitrary in all honestly. School is already hard, the aid department shouldn't make things 10x harder. read more
