It's a tiny shop so the selection isn't huge, but what is there is top quality and fresh. The prices a very reasonable for what you get and the flowers I've bought from here have always lasted well too. As well as flowers, The Flower Man has managed to squeeze a few little gifts and cards in among the bouquets and at Christmas last year they had some really lovely tree decorations. I love that The Flower Man is next to Vanilla Pod because whenever I go to buy cake for a friend's birthday I can get them a bunch of beautiful flowers. One unusual aspect I noted was the potted plants they had dotting the store; I'm not sure if I've ever seen a growing plant in a florist, I'm quite accustomed to those which have already been weaned from their home and stuffed in a bucket with others of their kind. Jan, the owner is a little powerhouse of creative energy. She places emphasis on creating baskets to suit exactly what you need. I should point out though, that they are open by appointment only. We used Wrapt with style for our client Christmas baskets this year. We gave them a list with our budget per client plus a few ideas of what each person likes. Red wine or white? Sweet tooth or savory preference? The ordering process was so easy and before I knew it, I had half a dozen beautiful baskets at the door. 'Wrapt with style' really is an appropriate name. Everything is designed beautifully, with scattered chocolates, gourmet foods and fresh produce arranged in the basket and decorated with stylish ribbons. It's a fine place for gifts for you, a friend, family or even just because you want something different to decorate your home. The stencil art, pottery pieces, bamboo sculptures, the handmade stuffed toys and everything in between has an air of elegant simplicity about it. Hanasho also likes to keep it local and stocks local artist's wares. What most people come here for is the Ikebana (Japanese form of flower arranging). It's an art form I have always admired. It's not just the practice of making nice, visually pleasing floral arrangements- the 'pieces' are sculptural and thought provoking. I also like that whenever you pop in to visit, the owner can be seen in the back half of his store on the floor kneeling over a new creation. It is his workshop and his gallery, per se. If he's not working on something out the back, you'll generally find him outside amidst the potted succulents having a cigarrette. The owner has a particular character that spills out of him into his immaculately arranged shop. If you're looking for something unique for a gift, I'd suggest coming here. It's full of contemporary, often wierd and wonderful surprises.

As you survey the intriguing range of jewellery, ceramics and other one-off pieces, you get the feeling that you've walked into a modern art museum (though on a small scale), the difference being that you can buy the artworks and take them home with you. The prices aren't cheap, as you'd expect for works of such quality. I've noticed some lovely bespoke ceramic cups and bowls going for $66 each, which I would happily buy for a wedding present or for my home. However, a series of commonplace objects encased in rectangular prism made of resin (the only I can remember was a dead bee) going for $220 each seemed a bit rich to me. Perhaps there's some special reason unbeknownst to a layperson such as myself for their seemingly exorbitant procetags.

The design of the store itself is fantastic, and is one of the first things to catch the eye of people passing by. All of the shelves and display tops are made with upturned takeaway coffee cups. It adds a completely new dimension to your average shopping experience and really gives it the feel of an art gallery. Sure, the prices in (m)art aren't exactly cheap, but be careful to keep in mind that the work on display is primarily by local artists (and let's face it, us creative types are hard-pressed earning a crust). For this reason, I would say that the prices are fair. Next time you're in South Bank, make sure you head in to (m)art for a browse. It's the perfect place to buy a gift for someone who has everything, or even for a wedding present. Plus, it's always great to support local and emerging artists.
