We had a great experience on the Holiday Island ferry going from Caribou, NS to Wood Islands, PEI…read moreand back. We had booked our itinerary online before we left and so when we arrived, the operators quickly located our reservation and ushered us into the appropriate queue. Boarding was orderly and organized and the ship left promptly. The rest of the 75 minute trip was very pleasant. The weather was beautiful and the deck allowed for a lovely panoramic view of the Northumberland Strait. We saw small fishing boats pass by, with friendly fishermen waving lobsters at us. The concession stand sold tea and coffee, ice cream and snacks while the cafeteria served hot sandwiches and breakfast. They even had poutine, which was still deliciously unhealthy even if it featured pale (rather than the typical dark) gravy used in Québec. The 'green' side of me loved that disposal of waste was separated into compostable, recyclable, and then finally trash bins. Overall a great experience; although it was pricier (~$70) than driving to PEI on the Confederation Bridge (~$40), it saved us time rather than having to reroute our itinerary and was a more enjoyable experience sailing across the Strait.

He demonstrated a depth and breadth of knowlege of matters important, trivial, tragic and funny and kept our attention through the two day travels. He went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and enrichment. We saw picturesque areas, I was not wild about Anne of Green Gables, but was surprised at how fascinating the museum and house visit were. He recommended excellent places to eat and we had only pleasant surprises and no disappointments, except that the day we flew home gave warmth and glorious sunshine to everyone on the island, obviously a circumstance beyond his control. Would I return? Absloutely! Would I recomend his tours? ...in a heartbeat.

He tried to foil me with his Anne of Green Gables trivia but I prevailed! He took us to the "Lake of Shining Waters" and to "Green Gables" and on a trip around the island and to see the new bridge. We also got to stand on the quintessential red cliffs of the island. If you are in the area you have to use them for your tour. If I am ever back on PEI (which I sure home happens) I will be sure to take a tour from them!

The…read moreMermaid and the Cow is the only LGBT campground in Atlantic Canada, and maybe it's the only one we need! Jane and Susan are lovely and hospitable, and have thought of everything. There are four non-gendered full bathrooms, a pool, a huge screened-in gazebo for mosquito-y nights, a variety of campsites, running water taps throughout, and a firepit at each site. On our first night, there was a terrible rainstorm, so Jane and Susan had the brilliant idea of a fun movie night in the screened-in gazebo, which meant we didn't feel bad about not being able to have a campfire. Happily, the rest of the weekend was perfect weather, so we could swim, watch the cows and horses, and explore the area. If the Keurig coffee isn't enough, you're about half an hour from either Tatamagouche or Pictou, both of which have sweet cafes and restaurants. Just down the road there is also Deb's Hidden Cafe, which serves as a store, a bar, a diner and a bakery!

She also was yelling at two young boys when she started with me. The campground is nice but that was really crappy customer service. And avoid Dawna Setner's wrath.

Turn off the Ferry Road, roll down a one-mile lane flanked by potato fields through a gate and past…read morea calvacade of RVs and you have arrived at the KOA Cornwall/Charlottetown campground. If you're tenting, this privately-run campground offers a number of spots under trees on a grassy area, or, more preferable some 10 spots or so overlooking the West River. But be warned: not all these spots actually have a view of the river. When we arrived, trees blocked in the spot we were given, the ground was uneven, and the space was small with neighbours on either side. A quick look around showed an empty spot bordering one of the potato fields on one side and screened with trees from the neighbours on the other. It also opened onto the river below. The young desk staff made the switch without complaint. The site proved to be great for birding. At one point a blue heron landed on the dead tree just beyond our camp site, and a couple of kingfishers regularly flew over during our two-night stay. It was also relatively quiet at night, although one evening a budding lumberjack, along with his son and wife, went down to the river directly below our site and while we tried to eat dinner thrashed around chopping at all the dead wood they could find. While this fatherly display of manly prowess to his son was touching, it also disrupted our peaceful dinner. The bathroom facilities were so-so, not the worst we'd see, not the best either. But at $6 a bundle, the green wood was a rip-off. While other neighbors happily sat around their crackling fires, ours hissed and emitted a ton of smoke. That, coupled with the fact, that a tenting spot at this site was almost $40 a night, justifies the two-star rating. Would I stay there again? Probably, but I'd bring a bundle of wood in for the fire next time.

This is the best hostel I have ever stayed in. It's in a great location--just a few minutes' walk…read morefrom downtown Charlottetown--in a converted house on a residential street. Downstairs are a couple of dorm-style rooms, a big kitchen (where you can cook your own food--they also include breakfast in your room rate), and a common room with free internet, a flat-panel TV, and lots of books and movies and board games. (Don't play Scrabble with Levi. He will probably beat you. Do, however, challenge him to the trivia games.) Upstairs are more bedrooms and three bathrooms. One is dorm-style and two are regular bathrooms, one reserved just for women. Fantastic--spacious and private! There's also a loft with private rooms. Outside is a detached garage with a pool table, a record collection, guitars for the musically inclined, and a beer fridge. That's where the cool people hang out. Also, you can rent bicycles at the hostel, and it's just a short ride to the Confederation Trail. The staff was really friendly--it was so nice to be recognized and greeted every time I walked in the door. It felt like a close-knit family environment, and I really enjoyed the evenings spent in the common room, playing games or watching TV with the other travellers. (Levi is the owner. He's super nice and quite charming, and he runs a great hostel. Don't ask him about the War of 1812 unless you want a skewed history lesson in American-Canadian relations.) I don't know if I'll ever make it back to PEI, but I would definitely stay here again. If all hostels were like this one, I would never stay in a hotel again.

For protein, they had an egg casserole with peppers (which I don't eat) and link sausage (which I also don't eat). They had a few hard boiled eggs the first day, but was out of them on the 2nd day. Oatmeal was in packets that you add water to. Some bread and crappy pastries. I do not recommend--there must be better places in Charlottetown.
