As other reviews state, this place is after your money, not your health. I contacted them for a filling repair, and they assured me over the phone (and on their website) that they will work diligently with my insurance to get the procedure covered. I showed up for a free consult and was immediately suspicious: The office is too posh. Then a single filling repair turned into four crowns. Then the doctor was clearly put off by the fact that I wanted to file with insurance rather than self-pay. He gave a long diatribe against insurance companies and how they always deny the claims, only care about their bottom line, etc. Then the admin person told me they'll only file with one insurance company. I was upset by the experience, but I was invested because I'd spent too much time on this already, so I went home and called my insurance company to ask if they'd approve an out-of-network procedure at this facility. THEY DID--and then NOVA Dental Anesthesia told the insurance company that I would have to pay everything upfront and file for reimbursement from the insurance company myself, because they didn't trust the insurance company to pay. Huge waste of time. Total change of attitude/treatment between the phone and the in-person consultation. Very unpleasant experience all around. RUN AWAY. This is not my first experience with a dental clinic specializing in sedation. The other one was just after my money, too. If you need sedation for dental procedures, I strongly recommend that you look at REGULAR dental offices that happen to also provide sedation. They are harder to find, but more honest and trustworthy, and they WILL work with your insurance company because they are not in the business of preying on your fear/pain. If Yelp will allow me to provide a recommendation (since they are so hard to find), I ultimately had this procedure done at Dental Smiles at Purcellville Gateway, where they have been really diligent in working with my insurance carriers, and never rude or unprofessional. read more

Every single team member of NOVA Dental Anesthesia has brought tears to my eyes with their kindness, skill, expertise, and understanding of special needs patients. I brought my sister with I/DD in last summer, desperate to find a dental practice that would not only sedate my sister during procedures, but to have the experience to 'renovate' my sister's teeth without blinking an eye. Those of you with special needs family members understand that we never quite know what's going on in there, what kind if condition the teeth are actually in, whether brushing happens regularly (forget flossing), and the trauma that comes with any medical procedure. So yes, we drive an hour from Bethesda to NOVA Dental Anesthesia to see the brother duo of the Dr. Alis. Yes, there are closer special needs dental practices in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, but none have the cultural competency of the insanely diverse staff at NOVA (this is key for those of you that understand.) I haven't even finished this review and my sister's quarterly cleaning is already done! read more

I went in with a toothache and needing an extraction. I left with a toothache, no extraction and a quote for $60,000. It was an inappropriate extreme solution pitched for a simple problem. You don't go in for an oil change and expect to get new car papers to sign. Greed and no care for the patients actual problem on display. There is no question in my mind that Dr. Ali knows what he is doing when it comes to implants and full mouth replacements. But how about earn my trust? Solve my immediate problem, before the aggressive sales pitch? Perhaps an appetizer before dinner? New patient logic and bedside manner? The way they approach treatment plans leaves a Grand Canyon of opportunity for improvement. Not a good experience. Mind you - my tooth hurts. Within five minutes he was on the 'let's pull out all of your teeth - uppers with the recent pearly caps and the lowers and replace them ALL with my realistic looking denture system...' He went into bone density tests and how I needed an immediate CT Scan ( though I brought 1a dozen state of the art x-rays from my dentist) I agreed and then paid the $399 scan fee for that on--the-spot-not-covered-by-insurance-surprise... and yay! 'You have enough bone! The whole process will take about a month" Did I mention - my tooth hurts? Outside the door I heard, "yep she's a candidate!" Now, we still had not solved for the pain I was in. He then sent in his financial closer to get me to sign the quote. All manner of 'we will run your credit - soft pull she said, to see how you would like to pay. She never asked me but I pay in full no need for financing fees ...but...um...how will we solve for my toothache? Well, she says, if you sign up for the $60K procedure he can put a temporary filling to give you 3-4 weeks relief until the lab stuff on your dentures is done. If you don't sign for the full replacements all uppers and the lowers, here is another quote for $6000 for an out-of-network extraction. Okay so if I take out 20 teeth and agree to the medieval-sounding- 'we shave-the-bone--for-evenness, dentures-to-soon, we use your own blood during surgery, shocker of an offer-- that I have had zero time to think about-- THEN I can get a filling to make this pain stop-for a month? If I don't, then it is a $6000 extraction next week soonest, as the only other option? She then handed me the $6000 bill and asked me to sign for that. I felt like I was at a car dealership. The fast easy treatment tied only to the big $60k sale, felt highly unethical. Did I mention...my tooth hurts? I am an accomplished middle-aged, rational executive with advanced degrees (only mentioned because I value detailed information). I asked for a pamphlet - something - to read up on and get comfortable with this nearly six figure procedure and Miss finance had nothing to offer me but "there's Googling people do on it," she said. But the quote? I should sign. I was, in a word SO disappointed. The Icing was I found them as an in-network provider. "Oh her," Miss Finance said, "she is a general dentist so we list your insurance with her yes The bait), but you are not seeing her and all else - no it is full price. No insurance (the switch)." Hm. Now, you tell me and not before...? Who invites new patients experiencing pain for a 2 hour sales pitch? It was like timeshare for teeth. Now I see other posts about billing practices. I will invest in a broader solution - perhaps with another provider. But FIRST I will find someone who actually cares, is actually in my network, to remove or fill the tooth giving me the care and courtesy today. Hint - if you let profit trump the pain patients are in...some one else will get the money for my long term plan. read more

Initially, I went to NOVA Dental Anesthesia after experiencing a significant chip in my front tooth. They gave me several treatment and payment options to address the work I needed done. Because there were no high pressure sales tactics involved, I felt that I was able to make a well informed decision about my dental health that I was comfortable with. My veneers were reasonable in cost and look fantastic! I couldn't be happier with my experience at NOVA Dental Anesthesia and highly recommend them. read more

Parents of special needs children need to be forewarned about this office's unethical billing practices. My son was seen here yesterday as a new patient and the dental care was great. However, my husband was surprised by 2 fees at checkout that were never mentioned while registering our son (if they had been, we wouldn't have gone to this practice). The more concerning fee was a "behavior management fee." Despite our child having no meltdowns or tantrums, requiring no special interventions such as laughing gas or other anesthesia, and completing the visit in a timely manner, the practice decided to bill us for this "in case insurance won't reimburse." The office billing clerk tried to use all sorts of excuses for why they charge this despite it not being appropriate for our visit, including that our son declined X-rays after being offered the option. It basically came down to the fact that they knew our child had a disability in advance and they felt entitled to take advantage of us for that, and charge us extra beyond the insurance reimbursement for a routine cleaning. The office billing person said they'd reimburse us "if Insurance paid," however upon clarification it's actually a credit to the account in the office "in case you need a filling or work done in the future." So it's not actually a reimbursement. We have never been charged this fee by any other providers in the past, including our former pediatric dentist. Insurances typically don't reimburse Behavior management fees (a simple google search will bring up stories of parents of special needs children fighting these types of fees). Furthermore, it is UNETHICAL to charge patients for routine preventive care if they have a disability. The other fee was for PPE- which per the ADA COVID19 Billing Guidelines, should not be charged to patients who have insurance plans that are in network with the practice. And there's no way one dental cleaning uses $10 worth of PPE. Parents, don't fall for this trap. There are plenty of pediatric dentists in NoVa who won't take advantage of you. read more

They are very well equipped, they do good work and are sensitive and non-judgemental with people who are fearful about dentists. Come here if you have avoided it for years because just thinking about it makes you shake. They will try to work out a plan with you if you cannot afford to do everything that is optimal. I cannot say enough great things about this dental practice. From our very first phone call, everyone was so kind and answered all my questions. I have a special needs son that needed a lot of dental work and needed to be put under sedation. The dentist was very patient and understood the unique needs and concerns we had for our son. The anesthesiologist was wonderful and took great care of him. They are truly wonderful and you can tell they really care about their patients! read more
