Ground-based microwave emitters assisted the missile in finding its target. The TM-61C was deployed at various sites in Europe and Asia from 1957 to 1962 and was replaced by the more advanced Mace cruise missile. Now sitting in the parking lot of a church the location used to be a local airport (Big Daddy's Airport) and was originally painted red and used as signage for the first location of the Big Daddy's restaurant chain. There is no caption near the missile, which is completely approachable. I was unable to discern how this obsolete nuclear warhead came to be here. What a unique experience I had finding this place…read more I had posted on Facebook that I was in town from LA and a friend from 30 years ago, then at first met at my first job in California randomly responded about the Old Burying Ground and said I should visit it. We were downtown and hitting a couple spots, and I was mentioning to my friend that lives locally about her response and it came right at the same exact moment that we were passing the cemetery and she pointed it out, so we quickly stopped and backed up and parked, and took a venture inside, mainly to see the girl that was buried in a barrel of rum, holy cow when you see the age of some of these graves and realize how extremely old they are, and you really quickly getting a sense of the magnitude of the history of the place. It is well worth your time to visit and explore.

Plan to spend around 30 minutes here , maybe longer if you take your time to read the tombstones . It's a well kept graveyard but be sure to watch your step as the terrain is uneven in some areas . If you really want to learn more about the town's oldest graveyard , you can take a tour offered by the Beaufort Historical Association . Go to the website or visit the Beaufort Historical Center on Turner Street for more info . It's a peaceful final resting place for hundreds of notable people , soldiers , seaman and most notably , the Rum Girl .

It is apparently the longest pedestrian bridge in the state. Bringing the House Creek Greenway Trail over Interstate 440 and joining the Museum of Art with Meredith College. From the Museum parking lot, follow the blue trail and continue south and east until you get to the bridge. You can also listen for the sounds of traffic. Note that the trail is not lighted at night. The Mordecai House was opened this past weekend for the annual Holiday Open House. With COVID, it…read morewas a little different than usual. Names and phone numbers were taken as well as a temperature check and the typical questions asked about being ill and travel. Masks were required and hand sanitizer was available. The chapel and visitor's center were open too so they provided a wrist band after you were checked so you didn't need to be checked again. I was very impressed how well planned they were for this. The number in the house and each room were limited too. Volunteers were inside in each room to provide some history. The rooms were also decorated for different periods of time over 235 years from Victorian to the Civil War to The house is the oldest house in Raleigh on its original foundation. A lot of the original items are still in the home. Besides the house, the park has a garden, law office, kitchen, chapel so there is plenty to see or have a picnic in the park.

Constructed in 1887, this was the main water tower for the city of Raleigh for 37 years. Before the tower was here, most of the water in the city came from private wells and such. But in the 1880's, a municipal system was built that drew water from nearby Walnut Creek and was carried to a nearby pumping station. The water was forced through sand filters and then into the 100,000 gallon water tank sat on top of the tower. But this point, this was the supply for the enter city and it wasn't keeping up. So in 1913, the city built a larger facility and built a larger dam upstream and this facility was decommissioned in 1924 and the steel tank was removed. Since then, the facility was converted into offices for an architectural firm and on to become a headquarters for a fast food company and lately, it's just a Historic Landmark for the city with an Tower Escapes company having two escape rooms inside. Cape Lookout Lighthouse is a must see if you are visiting the lighthouses. It is in need of repairs…read moreso was not open during my visit but the house was open and some valuable information was provided to us. The first floor of the house serves as a museum. We arrived to Cape Lookout via the 15 minute ferry from Harkers Island and we were dropped off at the docks and could walk up to the main area with restrooms and a gift shop that did serve cold drinks besides souvenirs. From there, the boardwalk leads you to either the ocean or the lighthouse depending if you go left or right. The island is pretty much undeveloped and as nature made it.
