This is a phenomenal venue... once you head down the long winding road off Rt. 5, you'll find a small parking area. We were pleased to see it wasn't crowded at all. Walking through the wrought iron gates onto the property, a gorgeous green lawn sprawls out over the rolling hills. The view of the James River is spectacular! The elegant, Georgian mansion sits majestically on the sloped hill facing the water. We walked through another imposing gate to the farm area where we saw chickens, horses, and several out buildings as well as a large bamboo grove which led out to the river. Circling back to the mansion, we noted the Colonial architecture and read all the posted historical plaques. Tours inside are by appointment. Around the back of this stately edifice, was a path leading into the incredible formal garden. It was breathtaking. We meandered through the manicured garden which is one of the finest features of this estate. Roses, irises, lilies, peonies, and other lovely flowers, trees, shrubs and bushes will brighten you day as you stroll through the grounds. We admired the massive monument, the tombstone of William Byrd, the focal point of the garden, as well as the statues, the sundial and the natural wood arbor overflowing with wisteria. We were truly awed by the beauty of Westover Plantation and amazed by all the attention to detail by the groundskeepers. This grand home is a landmark worth visiting! Typically there's a donation box by the entrance, but when we toured the plantation on Sunday, Mother's Day, during the Covid issue, no box was to be found. Perhaps they opened to the public (free) because they knew we all needed to get out of the house and get a brief glimpse of history and nature or it was removed. Either way, it was a delightful way to spend a few hours, soaking up Virginia's beauty and culture.

Westover is certainly one of the most beautiful colonial plantations on the James River. It was…read morebuilt in the mid-18th century by the Byrd family. I especially like the brick that was used in the construction. The house is simply elegant and has perfect proportions. Take special note of the steepness of the roof, the tall chimneys in pairs at both ends of the main house, and the elaborate doorway, which continues to be recognized as "the Westover doorway." The house is not opened for tours except for special occasions. Westover's grounds and outbuildings are open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They do ask for a small donation starting at $5.00 to tour the grounds; an honor box is located at the entry gate near the parking lot.

It is technically part of the overall Petersburg National Battlefield, which encompasses a number of geographically-dispersed battlefield parks. If you're interested in the history, go to the visitor's center, which has a nice assortment of period weapons on display. For background, Five Forks was (and is) a road junction, situated at the far end of an already badly extended Confederate defensive line. On April 1st 1865, Gen. Phil Sheridan moved to seize this position, only to be countered a smaller Confederate force. Union cavalry was decisive here, as it had evolved from a reconnaissance force to mobile infantry. That mobility was put to good use, as it pinned the Confederates while the rest of the army moved into position, wining the fight. This success sparked the collapse of the Confederate trench line around Petersburg, thus ending 9 months of trench warfare and leading to the surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox a week later. There was a gentleman inside one of the houses who spent a great deal of time telling me about the adjacent native tribes that were involved, and paid a special homage to the Queen of the Pamunkey tribe. The parking lot is decently sized and can accommodate a lot of people. They have a nice overlook bluff with picnic tables which is great for enjoying nature and having a scenic view. The walking trail has multiple offshoots that allow you to explore, get closer to the water and has benches sprinkled throughout. I absolutely loved my time here getting to just sit and relax in such a beautiful, peaceful environment. They also offer history reenactments here as well, while I have not checked that out yet I am excited to.

The post office is past the railroad tracks, but we tooled around to check out the library, the caboose, the historic cannon, the farm house, Halligan Park and the sprawling Victorian home. But of course for me, the post office was the main attraction! Rachel, the clerk running the show was extremely pleasant and welcoming! She gave me some history of the village, telling me that there used to be a general store with a post office here! It has since burned down, but she had some vintage photos of the previous post office on the wall (see photos). She had a huge binder of collectible stamps, and I purchased about $100 worth! So many fun stamps! Even a jeopardy sheet with Alex trebeck and actual answers! I wanted some post cards too, but they were out so next time for sure! The marker reads, "In 1611, Farrar's Island was the site of the "Citie of Henrico," one of Virginia's first four primary settlement areas under the Virginia Company of London. Later, it was part of a 2,000-acre land patent issued posthumously to William Farrar in 1637. Farrar, who arrived in Virginia from London in 1618 aboard the Neptune, invested in the company under its third charter. In 1626, Governor Sir George Yeardley appointed Farrar to the governor's Council, a position he occupied until 1632. He also served as a justice for two counties. Farrar family members resided on the island until they sold it to Thomas Randolph on 26 Jan. 1727." There do not appear to be many Farrar's left in the area. [Review 11971 overall, 1754 of 2019.]

Went on the base to deliver a Door Dash order. I was in the passenger seat. I'm used to having to…read moreshow my ID at the gate, BUT I have never been asked for my SSN. I wasn't trying to get a credit card or anything, so why was that needed and why haven't they done that before. The officer at the gate wasn't the friendliest either. I had no choice but to give it to him, but I won't be riding on the base anymore. It was a weird experience all together. The young military officers we delivered to were super sweet and nice though. It made the delivery better.
