Must be the cookie smell. The lady who helped me open an account was super nice, smiley, pleasant, friendly, and helpful. She pleasantly tells me it's cookie day, so I get a bottle of water and a warm Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookie with blue sugar stars. Yep. It's that kind of place. She even informs me that there is also popcorn day. Wonder if there is pizza and beer day too. This place blows WM, BA, and WF out of the water. Personable and courteous service is not old fashioned and should not be considered unusual. Checking accounts need to have at least 300 as balance but that is waived for the first three months. Also available with this free account is online banking and cookies. There are no BA or WF places here. Those are in Espanola, NM thirty miles away on a windy road (HWY 68) that hugs the Rio Grande. Banking has never been so happy, pleasant, or fun before I came here.

The mortgage application/approval experience with her was painless and pleasant (totally unexpected). To Wells' credit, they were also unexpectedly accommodating to a slightly unusual financial situation; this may be because they are a large national bank to whom little is unusual. Unfortunately they were unable to credit a corrected credit report (not merely improved, actually corrected, with a 90 point change because of it). And Wells interest rates are so-so; because of a recent rate spike, however, their initially so-so rates became good. Smaller banks in Taos could not meet my needs (largely, I think, due to lack of experience or sophistication). Wells as a corporation is not my favorite due to its decisions during the housing bust. But, man, it met my needs here. And Melissa was a delight!

Yesterday I had to get a cashiers check. It took me over ONE HOUR. After waiting 20 minutes to see…read morea banker, we did the paperwork. Then she said she had to go to the teller line to get the check. It took her 40 Minutes at the teller line!! While I watched the people waiting in line for tellers turn over 4 times. When she returned, I said what should have been an easy transaction has taken over an hour. Instead of saying she was sorry that this took so long, she said "you can go now"! Hillcrest Bank needs to improve their customer service.

They refused to work with me, stating that this is what they offered, period. I have also heard that they turn people down because they were recently divorced. This is a family bank that does very little for building the community.
