This hardware store is conveniently open 24 hours a day, however once you walk in its is a complete mess there. Even the staff themselves can not find things, that bad the mess is here. Some of the associates are very rude, and have no idea about basic things you ask them. They need major improvement on customer service. Most of the staff sits around chatting to one another. I bought a drill here, when purchased I didn't take a close look, the packaging was open. When I finally tested it after 2-3 weeks, I realized that it was very weak, plus the battery life was very short. I took it back, but was refused a refund. It hasn't been 30 days from the day of the purchase yet. I'm not coming back here again. read more

Needed a key duplicated. Felt pretty comfortable going into the first hardware store I passed on my walk home from work. Nuthouse provided me with a quick LOL over its namesake, but, unfortunately, that'd be the end of Nuthouse doing me any favors. Quick key duplication process somehow took three visits to get right. To me, that's pretty unacceptable. To Nuthouse, that may be best practice. Whole drawn-out process made me really question my current career path and had me briefly contemplating a life as a locksmith so I could do simple tasks like this myself. I tried having a rational conversation with the guy behind the counter suggesting that he give me my money back due to the extended inconvenience, but I quickly retracted and left after determining that this hardware employee who couldn't duplicate a key would not be able to grasp my advice on standard moral code and human-to-human virtuousness. read more

This place is great, in my opinion. It's convenient if you live in the area, it's open 24 hours, it has a wide variety of things you might need from hardware to dishwashing soap to kitchen utensils, and it's not too expensive. The staff is generally nice too and will help you in finding things and whatnot. I go here to get keys copied and to buy things needed around the house and it's a great resource to have in the neighborhood. read more

Excuse me as a I geek out for a sec: Homefront in the HOUSE. OK, on to the review: One of my friends recently admitted that she pictures me in my house "just taking things apart and like building stuff". OK. I'll take that. It's *kinda* true. I am a shop girl for sure, but usually I'm putting things together (or painting or sewing, but I guess those don't really count) and when I need bits and parts for all of these projects I head to my main men at Homefront. They have everything. All your basic hardware needs including paint, keys, blinds and tools. They also have all kinds of organizational items and apparently an entire floor dedicated to toys (??). A great example of New York City bait & switch. Say one price, give another. Say you have it even if you don't. I call them up because I need 46 pieces of 1"x2" lumber, in 8 ft lengths. They say they have that and then some. I go there, they only have 24. They offer me more expensive, larger lumber I could then cut. I say no, I'll be paying more and I have to do more cutting work, how does this make sense? They agree to cut some down for me to that size, as if it would be a favor, and we asked how much it would be. They said $2/pc. This isn't a favor because a) Home depot sells it for $1.17 b) We clarified on the phone with 2 separate people that they had it. c) Selling goods for profit is not a favor, especially when you are selling it at the same price you would had you not inconvenienced me. Then we asked how long it would take. They kept answering with a vowel in spanish. Ah, eh, etc. We asked at least 20 separate times, no answer from ANYONE in the no-speaky-english squad. Of course not, they know if they say a half hour we're likely to say F it and go elsewhere. We go to the tasti-dlite around the corner to get ice cream. We come back a half hour later to the register, he rings it up at $2.69/pc. I go outside to my friend in the cart to make sure he heard the same $2/pc I did. The same six motherfuckers who couldn't speak a damn word of English all turn into a set of Harvord English professors. With excellent annunciation they state - "we did say 2 and change sir, $2.69." The sir is NOT a product of paraphrasing or my imagination. This group of assholes that could not speak a word of English when asked a real question DID INCLUDE THE SIR. HELLS NO YOU DID NOT SAY $2.69, OR 2 AND CHANGE. We both said either give us this wood at the $2/pc there were two witnesses to you quoting us at, or keep your wood. They stared blankly and shrugged as we threw the 46 pcs off the cart. Literally threw it back into the store. It was fun. I got tired after 10 pieces, luckily the enormous 6'5" 280 lbs dinosaur I had with me was there to toss the other 36 pieces into the store. Knocking stuff off shelves with the wood was a small consolation for being lied to and wasting an entire afternoon. Fuck this place, and every other place in NYC where they think it's cool to get over on people through this kind of underhanded nonsense. FWIW, this hardware store used to be excellent. They must've changed ownership, employees, or something, this is NOT the nuthouse of early 09. read more

I was looking for a specific product and called several hardware stores to find one that had it. When I spoke to the person in the department I was told they had them and walked over a mile down to the store. When I got there they didn't have the product and I was a little annoyed, having gone so far out of my way. I asked to speak to a manager and when I explained the situation he was really rude about it and didn't seem to mind that even though his employee put me on hold to check the stock I still came down there for nothing. read more

I have picked up a few things at Nuthouse since moving into the neighborhood. The place is pretty expensive but it's right near my apartment. Today I went in to have roller blinds cut as temporary window covers until I have time to find the right curtains. It became clear the man cutting them had never done it before. It took me over an hour to have three blinds cut. I measured my windows exactly as they told me to and brought my measuring tape with me with marks (to make sure measurements were exact). He managed to cut the blinds and I went home to hang them. I took a closer look...the cut job was horrible! It looked like he chewed the blinds instead of cutting them. I held them up to the window....and they were cut too short! I went back to the store (less than 30 minutes from when I purchased them).The cashier refused and said that I would have to take it up to the guy who cut them. I went upstairs and told him they were cut wrong and messy and I wanted to return them. He said no. I was befuddled. "No?" He demanded to see my measuring tape that we had used with the markings. I said that it was at home and regardless of the miscut, the quality of work was poor and I wanted to return them. He refused and called the bigger guy over who also refused to provide a refund. He demanded to see the original measurements. I again stated that I did not have the measure tape but it should not matter since the quality of the cut was so horrible. Then I couldn't believe what happened. The guys started yelling at me and the big guy was pointing his finger in my face and becoming physically threatening. Are you kidding me? I just wanted to return what they had screwed up. I could believe what was happening. I was being yelled at over their shoddy work! I plan to work out the charges with the manager of the store tomorrow(and have already disputed the charges...it's only $34 but that isn't the point)! From this day forward....I will be walking to HOME DEPOT on 23rd. Home Depot's prices are more reasonable and they don't yell at their customers! read more

It's a really sad place, with miserable employees and ridiculous policies about returns or exchanges..A $5.99 item could be returned within 24 hours with a 10% restocking fee if it was one minute outside of that 24 hours! I don't recommend this place! They have weird system of helping customers and ask for tip "meet me outside on street after you pay" after cutting a piece of wood. That happened the first time. I went back a second time; the assigned salesman didn't speak good English, I then asked for someone else to help me but since he already "had the job" and I had paid, it was like the other salesman wouldn't even look at me when I asked for another salesman who spoke English to help me. Then my assigned salesman got a serious attitude when I requested some details about a product. He then refused to help me and waited on other customers. I eventually got a refund after being made to wait for 12 minutes. 1 week ago I purchased a lightbulb from Nuthouse. I take the bulb home, put it in the receptacle & learn that the thread of the bulb was warped. The bulb wouldn't screw all the way in & wouldn't turn. I returned to the Nuthouse to exchange for another bulb & was VERY RUDELY told, the thread is NOT warped & they do not exchange bulbs. I had about a 10 minute exchange with a VERY rude cash rep explaining that they should try to screw in the bulb, I just want to exchange etc... NOTHING. I have never had such a poor customer service experience in my life. Looks like i'll be hitting home depot from now on. I can't recommend for any reason. read more

My boyfriend and I were plagued with the task of assembling a bed I had purchased online. But because the bed was only 2 feet off the ground, I needed to replace the legs so I could fit my under-bed storage underneath it. I went to Nuthouse and had an EXCEPTIONAL experience with their sales associate Angel. He was literally a godsend (no pun intended). During the hour he spent helping us, he custom cut legs that would fit my height specifications, then he went above and beyond to cut the head off of 6 screws using a terrifying electric saw that could have seriously injured him (and which he apparently wasn't supposed to use, but did so because he really wanted to help us out). The detail, time, energy, and knowledge to help accommodate the ridiculous needs my bed demanded, could not have been met at a Home Depot or Lowes. Nuthouse is a full service business, that is less like a "Hardware Store" and more like a "Hardware Mecca." In the future, I plan to only consult Nuthouse when attempting a project, as I am confident that the 3 things I'll always be in need of: materials, assistance and patience, can be easily accessed there. read more

Incompetent paint mixer - we asked for two shades of gray and he gave us grayish brown and grayish pink. We painted our living room thinking it would look more like gray when it dried, but it didn't. We went back to ask for more paint and they couldn't replicate the colors they provided to us the day before, so we had to paint over the first layer with new colors. It was a nightmare. We asked them for some kind of discount or something and they refused to compensate for their employees' incompetency. Also, I've noticed the shelves are completely disorganized. Terrible customer service. The man I spoke to on the phone completely blew me off. I called to enquire about spray paint, intending to head to the store if they had a certain color in stock. I was told that they carry the brand but when I asked for him to check if the color was in stock, he refused and I was told "That's my final answer". Wonderful from top to bottom. 5 floors (if you include the basement) of just about everything hardware. Open 24 hours to boot! This is just part of the reason why I am now a loyal customer. A bigger reason is this: the first time I went there I just needed 2 bolts. Not 200, not 2 packs, 2 measly bolts. The guy who helped me find them is the owner's son and the reason I stress the fact that it was just two bolts is because he took a lot of time to assist me with this. It's so refreshing because great customer service seems to be a lost art. I always get the same fantastic service everytime I go there no matter who helps me out. Just spent an hour at the Nuthouse. Our guest bed slat broke so we need to get a replacement. Home Depot does not cut wood in Manhattan so we went to the Nuthouse. Moe was incredibly helpful. He cut the wood and drilled all of the holes along with installing the 6 screws. He did a great job. Cost was very reasonable. Very happy we went to the Nuthouse! Anyone who has ever had to go through the gruesome pain of moving, knows what it's like when you suddenly run out of boxes, especially "after hours". The convenience of this store being open 24hours alone, merits them 5 stars. However, my experience was (in my humble opinion) exceptional. I was immediately greeted by "Mo" as soon as I walked in the door, he guided me to the box section and helped me pick out the right ones. Then, he gave me a discount for all the boxes I bought. What's more, he helped me rope the boxes together (and actually took his time), so that I could easily haul them out and onto the subway... Ok, fine. I took a cab. But the boxes were very well wrapped and would have made it on the subway as well. Mo was very helpful, and I cannot say anything bad about my experience at this store. Keep it up, guys! read more

I adore this place! There have been more then a few occasions when working on a very tight deadline I realize at 3 AM I am out of contact cement or spray glue or drywall screws. What is one to do when your work has to be in front of camera at 10 AM? Why hail a cab and run to Nuthouse (nee Homefront). Are their prices perhaps a tad bit higher? Yep, that's what I have to pay to be able to get the stuff I need at 3AM! They are well stocked and the employees there have never once been rude to me but pointed me directly in the right direction. It's a 24 hour hardware store with great customer service. I called ahead to find out before I left my office inconspicuously to get this gadget. The first rep misunderstood me, but another guy came on and was great help. I arrived at the store and asked for his help. He was very patient and explained things to me. Though the shovel is probably more expensive than probably Home Depot, he gave me a 10% discount to bring the price down just "a bit". My mom will probably be disappointed that I didn't go to the local hardware store (cheaper), but I liked the service and I also want to support local businesses. read more

Just went in to ask for a simple adjustment from tools they had out. He said he'd have to sell it to me. I explained it's just loosing a bolt with a ratchet and socket. Still said no. Wanted to charge me $60. When I agreed to buy, then return immediately after he said he would not accept my return. Went to the firehouse down the street and they helped me in 2 minutes. Assholes just interested in the bottom line. Don't wanna do a favor for the community and help out a customer and now i will never go back to this store. A terrible place. The prices and customer service are ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. I purchased a heater from Nuthouse three days ago since my heat kept going out. The heater was defective and didn't work 50% of the time. I finally stopped giving it the benefit of the doubt and decided to exchange it for another heater. The guys there were EXTREMELY reluctant to help me. The first mulled over the heater I was trying to return - turning it on, reading through the manual for some "technical" explanation that would prevent me from being able to return it. Finally, I decided to look at other heaters meanwhile and was greeted by an extremely rude staff woman upstairs that told me all the heaters work and shes never heard of such a problem and that she can't help me. When I came back with another heater, the guy with thy ponytail told me they would not give me a refund since the item was not defective. I mentioned that the item did not work half the time and I couldn't stay there waiting for it to go bad to prove it. Obviously if it worked, I would not have returned it. He then went on to embarrass me in front of the other customers saying that I better not even try returning the new heater I was exchanging it for and stamped a huge NO RETURN on the receipt. He also said that if anything was wrong no only would they not give me a refund but that I better come back immediately instead of waiting a couple days. I was mild mannered and did not speak back the entire time - which begs the question: why was he being such a jacka$$? Finally I just told him it's good to know since I will not be taking my business to Home Depot even though its a little further walk. I would suggest anyone and everyone in the neighborhood go to Home Depot for better priced items, a more cordial customer service environment, and a hassle-free return police where noone will accuse you of being a cheat. read more

When I needed a pipe repair clamp that Home Depot doesn't keep in stock, this place was there to help. The store itself is a disorganized mess although perhaps that gives it some old school charm. As other reviews note the service is pretty lacking. Once I successfully tracked an employee down, he found the part I needed quickly. Prices were reasonable. TERRIBLE OVER-THE-TELEPHONE SERVICE While the store has many products, they are more expensive than nearby hardware stores & Home Depot. Service in the store is good. However, today, I have called 3 times to request a piece of glass to be custom-cut. Service is HORRENDOUS. 1st Call: guy kept me on the phone for 15 minutes reconfirming over & over again the size. Finally he was so confused & told me he'd call me back with a price. No return phone call. 2nd Call: I asked to talk to someone about a piece of custom glass. The Phone Attendant just transferred me into an answering machine, without explanation. 3rd Call: Same Phone Attendant picked up. I asked to speak to his manager, he transferred me to same answering machine. I am a highly profitable customer that will pay any price for nails/paint/etc at a local hardward in exchange for convenience and good service. This place is amazing. It's in the center of Manhattan, stocks everything (really, everything), is reasonably priced and is open 24-7. It is extremely disorganized and you will most likely need help finding what you need. But the staff are more often than not pretty helpful. Anyone who has given this business a five star review is obviously a ghost file. I called about asking for a 10ft chain to pull my car out of the mud. I was on hold for 2 minutes and a man answered didn't give a name. I asked if they had the product and he proceeded to curse at me and try to make me feel like and idiot. Now I have great patience for people but if I'm calling you for a question to lead to a sale you don't curse at people and hang up. He didn't even give me time to explain what I needed. Just because the life of a hardware salesman is too much for him at 11 at night doesn't mean you take it out on people with a actual problem To him it may be a stupid question but to me I'm not trying to waste my time. i'll come out of my way here, any day over home depot. this place has everything you could possibly need for your apartment, office, house, etc. it is really well stocked and there are so many options to choose from in every department. the prices are very reasonable - no fifty dollar broom stick handles here. the staff here really know there stuff and they are really nice. even the crabby old lady that wears a ski hat is a fun character. she looks like she hasn't slept in 3 days, probably because she's the only one that works 24 hours. that is actually the best thing about this place, it is open 24 hours. on a number of occasions that came very handy. just last week i had a buddy from out of town visiting and i needed to make an extra key for him. it was 11pm on a friday night and i knew exactly where to go. thank you home front for being new york convenient. read more
