Never, never, never buy anything you might have to return from Nuthouse Hardware. They will only accept unopened goods. If you open something and find it is defective, they will refer you to the manufacturer. Tough luck for the customer. read more

Something bad has happened to this place. I have gone for years, and had few problems. But I recently went to have 3 keys made from an original . Only 2 of the 3 worked when I tested back at home, so I went back to get a replacement for the bad one. The employee who original made the keys took the bad one and my original, I assumed to make a new good one. Again, I went back home -- but this time, not only did the new key not work, neither did the original. This guy had "fixed" the original to be like the bad one, not vice versa. Go figure. When I went back, he denied this - but then another employee said that yes, this could happen. They refunded my payment (~$3), but offered no further compensation for my time or frustration. I then wen to Render True Value Hardware at 33rd and Third got 3 perfect new keys from the one remaining original that I had to retrieve from my apartment building's office. Nuthouse has been the go to hardware store in the neighborhood for years -- open 24/7 with almost any hardware or household item you might need. The array of goods is the same, but attitude of the staff has changed, making me wonder if management has changed. I don't plan to go back. read more

We were dying of hear in our apt. We put away the AC already and ended up here for a fan at 1 am. There was a woman who works there who provided the best customer service I have seen in a while. She took us to all the fans, explained the power and reliability of each one and we bought her recommendation. I think it's honestly better than the AC. we slept like champions. I am not a hardware expert, but I know good customer service when I see it. I was looking for some set screws for some bathroom hardware. It turned out they were metric. One of the employees spent close to a half hour finding me the right items, which were worth about $1 in sales. This is 5-star service. read more

A somewhat strange hardware store, loaded with hard and housewares which you never knew you needed, with a staff that can be terrific, if you're a good sport. I'm not knowledgeable about prices, but theirs seem reasonable, despite some other reviews. The employees don't give a great first impression, be it language or attitude, but go in with a sense of humor and some extra time, and they'll come though for you, sometimes going out of their way with service. I needed a small piece of wood to replace a shelf with exact dimensions, Antonio took me in the basement, found just the right wood, cut it to order and checked and double-checked until he was satisfied. They will also give advice on mior repairs and maintenance. Some of the guys are learning the computerized register system, so if you're in a rush, it could be frustrating. They went out of their way to resolve a return that I had, taking my word and giving me credit, which in another shop I could have easily been told that it was too late, or thrown up their hands and said that they couldn't help me. Nuthouse hardware is an amazing place. They have a little bit of anything and everything you need for your home and any hardware you can imagine. If you live in the east 20s or 30s you have to check out this place. They are open 24/7 and have everything you need from a huge array of shower curtains to drapery rods to garbage cans of every size and color. They have a ton of choices for every type of product. Honestly, they have the largest selection of items that it's just easier to start here first. Best of all their sales staff is knowledgeable about the products they sell and can make recommendations about what tools or equipment you may need for a project. Yeah they have a lot of stuff and are open 24 hrs, that's the good part. What pissed me off was that they sold me a TV remote control that didn't work with my TV when it was supposed to and they wouldn't give me my money back bc I had opened the package to test out the remote...to see if it worked with my TV...So they will steal your money if you're not careful. read more

My boyfriend and I live close to the Nut House so we used to go there for everything. It's open 24 hours a day so it is convenient in that way but after a few bad experiences, we probably won't be back. Most recently, we bought Christmas lights for our tree and when we got them home, there were several broken lights and no replacement lights in the box. My boyfriend went to return them that same night and there was no more left in stock. An employee told him to wait a week or two to see if they get any more in. When we went back into the store to see if they had more, the employee who "helped" us was extremely rude and said that we couldn't return or exchange the lights. After interrupting me multiple times and being somewhat aggressive, he suggested that maybe we should come back on Monday between 9-5. After I explained to him that we both work 9-5 jobs and asked if there was anything else we could do, he told me (well, yelled really) that I should just be glad that he was trying to offer me a solution and walked away. Yes, it's convenient when you need supplies late at night / early morning but check everything before you buy it and don't expect anyone in the store to help you if something goes wrong or they sell you something that doesn't work. read more

As one of the only 24 hour hardware store, Nuthouse has saved me more than once. On top of that they have a vast selection of items, some which are hard to find. I was recently looking for a set of replacement door hinges for steel door jambs - I went to 4 different hardware stores and none of them had the ones I needed, but Nuthouse had them in stock! Fred was very helpful and gave me a discount on them as well, since I needed only 4 but the hinges only came in sets of 3. They're not the cheapest, but I can't expect that from a store that's open 24 hours. All in all a pleasant experience - I wish there were more hardware stores like Nuthouse! read more

Consistently terrible customer service. Its almost like they dont want you to spend your money, or make sure that when you do there is absolutely no recourse to get it back. Second floor is a mini-HomeGoods and they're great - but overall they're just lucky to have the convenience factor tied up in Murray Hill. read more

They sold me a previously opened kitchen item that had been resealed and sold to me. Then when I tried to exchange it the next day, they said their return policy was that they don't take back opened items!!!!!!! I have shopped here for 7 years and the customer service has taken a nose dive in the past couple of years. When I said, "You've got to be kidding me. You sold me an opened item and then say you can't take it back?" the manager started screaming at me, saying, "I tried to help you! Now I'm not returning it!!" I am never shopping there again and highly suggest you don't either. I have filed a complaint with Consumer Affairs at 3-1-1 and have also blocked my debit card from paying the fee. This manager needs to understand that just because he is having a bad day, he does not get to break the law and violate consumer rights. read more

This place is ridiculous (in a bad way)! I am a semi-frequent patron of The Nut House and on today's trip to the store I happened to have a large Ikea bag with me to carry some used/empty platters and Tupperware containers from a party at work. As soon as I stepped foot in the top floor household good section I was confronted by the sales woman who told me I would need to "check" my bag before I could begin browsing. Having never heard of such a policy before, I asked for clarification. "You've never heard of having to check your bag at a store?" to which I replied no. Rather than explaining this sort of bizarre policy to me the crazy sales woman quite rudely told me that I "needed to get out more." As she said this to me she showed me where I could "check" my bag, which just turned out to be a place in the floor near the cash register... not even behind a counter or secluded from other shoppers. I promptly told the crazy sales lady that #1 she needed an attitude adjustment and #2 perhaps she should have a bit more trust in her customers rather than make such insane demands. With that I walked out without and of the items I needed, which is a bummer, but totally justified given the lunacy of this place. Ugh! read more

I don't understand how they stay in business. I've gone there a few times looking for odds and ends and the employees were SO RUDE. The most recent visit they told me not to touch anything. What? I can't touch this screwdriver? First of all, the place is laid out like a pigsty. Hard to find things, aisles crammed. No one there to help me and when I do ask for help they bark at me. On top of that, they are more than twice as expensive as Home Depot! Wanna know how I know? Because I left this establishment and went for a 20 min walk to their competitor where I got friendly service, was ALLOWED to touch the merchandise, and left with a lot more money in my pocket. I'd be happy to spend more money and support a local establishment over a chain store, but if I can't even get a smile let alone assistance, no way they will see a penny from me or from any of my neighbors who I will gladly refer elsewhere. read more
