With my daughter living a block away, we were delighted to find a well-stocked hardware store, with virtually everything we needed to work in her apartment. Fred was particularly helpful and nice. When he wasn't there, his associates attended to us quickly and pleasantly. While items aren't marked, there is indeed a scanner on the main floor, so you don't need to purchase anything blind. Now, this might seem a little trivial in light of current events - but it is a microcosm of a certain kind of attitude. I'm happy to report that for the most part, during this stressful time I've encountered mostly patience and helpfulness. There've also been a few pockets of impatience and condescension. Here we are in the middle of the CV-19 crisis, and we're not really supposed to be out and about, but I badly needed a mask - my old one is disintegrating. Nuthouse is open, so I called first, spoke to someone - I tried to be very clear, said I was looking for a single fabric mask, preferably black. He said,"Oh yeah, we have those' So I went up there and disappointingly, of course the only thing they have is a bin full of multiple-pac paper-type dust-masks for painting. I needed something, so I bought those. I'm paying - the card-reader is so small and flimsy and not anchored to anything, afraid I was going to pull it off the counter as I removed my card, I unconsciously put a fingernail on the screen to stop it from scooting - and for some reason, that cancelled the transaction. So clerk-guy says,'eh, y'cancelled it'. He resets, I insert again - he indicates for me to sign. I pick up the stylus, and try to sign. The signature pad is so scratched up I can't see if I've actually made contact - I thought it must've been the way I was contacting the stylus to the pad, but it starts to become evident that the LCD display just no longer works. As I'm going in for the third try to make a legible mark, clerk-guy is snapping a receipt in my face - he did this repeatedly. And mind you, while this transaction is happening I'm the only one in the store - not like anyone is waiting - 'I can't see any signature'. I said. 'I can see it', he says, waving my receipt at me again. Could he have bothered to say, 'It went through - no problem -here's your receipt'? He should be apologizing for the crappy equipment and say - 'Sorry for the inconvenience'. The gentleman should know that it's not his job to make the store's customers feel like a$$h*les. Particularly not at this stressful time. That's not the point of customer service - people will make it a point to go elsewhere - even in an emergency. How would ANYONE know that their signature pad is barely functional? And Sir, does it make you feel superior to snap that receipt at me like I'm oblivious? Y'know - I don't even want to tell you how many years I've lived in this neighborhood - and I've been very glad on occasion that the Nuthouse is there, and is open twenty-four hours. But you never know what you're going to get. I've gotten some real stellar service - and some real attitude. Nuthouse - if we ever get back to normal, do us a favor and upgrade your payment hardware - it doesn't cost that much! And then it will be one less indignity your customers have to suffer when they visit your store. read more

If you're a woman don't waste your time here, or anyone for that matter. I went in with my two male roommates for anchors to mount a TV, the associate would only address them even when I was the one asking questions. We brought in the screws from the TV that had been used to mount it in a prior apartment and he insisted that it was all wrong and showed us one option for screws and anchors - what he was showing us had a weight limit of 85 pounds even when we repeatedly told him we needed a higher limit for a 75" TV. When we insisted that we needed to see other options (all of the inventory is off-limits to customers so you need to know exactly what you want because they will not offer options), the associate got belligerent with my roommate (not me because he still wouldn't address the woman standing there) and said "if you know what you want go get it" and let him behind the counter but provided no help in directing him towards where the screws and anchors were. We left feeling irritated and defeated and opted for Home Depot the next day. read more

Can't vouch for most of the store, but my experience here is phenomenal. I was playing a show around the corner from this store on a Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend. My drum pedal just broke and had maybe 20 minutes before I hit the stage. THANKFULLY, I found this store and they were open. Upon running inside, I explained to the two guys up front what happened and what I needed. Within 5 minutes, one of the employees ran to a part of the store to get some pins, or something like that, that helped fix my drum pedal. Their help got me through the 3 hour set I had to play and I am extremely grateful for that. So thanks guys, while I didn't explore he store, the customer service was incredible. read more

There's a lot of rough reviews for Nuthouse. I didn't read them all and I'm sure many are warranted, but I love this place. It's saved my ass so many times over the last 10 years. A 24 hour hardware store in Manhattan?? As far as I know it's the only one of its kind. Don't expect the anti-septic, "customer is always right" approach of so many stores these days (and don't you sometimes get sick of that just a little? Too many stores these days are like a Black Mirror episode). The folks that work at Nuthouse are characters -big surprise with a name like 'Nuthouse', but the characters I've dealt with are honest characters, and I hope this place sticks around for many years to come. Was in the running as our go-to from 25th st., but the entire place us severely disorganized, cramped, and inefficiently stocked (don't even get me started about the super weird BBB spillover reject warehouse upstairs); the staff is comprised of 1 helpful guy who dies not speak much intelligibly and 5 other staff who pretend to be helpfully knowledgable but don't know squat about anything tool or hardware related...they just know how to sound like they know stuff, but I doubt they know the difference between caulk and grout. Wow. I'm an understanding person, but never in my life have I been so disrespected by someone who's job it is to offer simple customer service help in their place of business. Shop employee Irene answered the phone angrily, dismissed and cut off all of my questions, told me I was wasting her time, and couldn't care less if I received the answer I needed when inquiring if they stocked a product I needed. Highly recommend!!! Knowledgeable, helpful staff. We purchased a portable washing machine for our apt. from Home Depot. Unfortunately, the hose didn't fit any of our sinks and we needed an adapter. Calls to Home Depot were fruitless. Went to local Ace Hardware where they said they knew what we needed but they didn't have it. I went online and ordered it, nope. Then went to Home Depot by Bloomies, same story on all counts. Reached out to a friend who we thought might the able to tell us what we needed and he recommended Nuthouse. He was spot on. This place was originally called Home Front Hardware when they opened up twenty or thirty years ago. Service was better, prices more reasonable and staff definitely more knowledgeable. I'm assuming the original owners sold the place, because the personnel has changed. A few months ago I had two keys made there (at $15 per) and I was told by people I know they were waaaaaaay overpriced. But it was in my neighborhood and convenient. Even at that price, I had to bring the keys back because they didn't work. Had a few more negative incidents, but I find long, drawn out reviews boring so I'll spare you. Really too bad, since I live a block away and the place is really convenient. But when it comes to anything costing more than a few bucks, I'll probably shop elsewhere, even if it means traveling a longer distance. If you do choose to shop there, I hope your experiences are better than mine. read more

Great Friday night date spot, went here on a second date the other day. They don't sell alcohol so make sure your pre-game is strong. They do sell Monster though, and I was able to sneak a water bottle full of vodka past the door guy. Just make sure you're not too obvious, and the staff doesn't like when you run around sloshing your drink everywhere. Atmosphere-wise: The lighting is kind of harsh, wear shades. Pro-tip: Guys, take your lady to the glue aisle, one of the bulbs is burnt out so the lighting is kind of nice. The music could be louder, it's almost as if they don't even want you to dance and have a good time. I guess there's always tonic around the corner if you tryin to get freaky. Upper floors must be VIP or something because they're closed off, the door guy was being all secretive, didn't want to take us upstairs. The best way to get up there is to ask for something really obscure at the front registers and they might let you in, with an escort. Great selection of caulk for you ladies, but lots of tools...but that's Murray Hill, love it for what it is. Would return, hoping for a 3rd date with the lady, fingers crossed! read more

Things I like: the store is somewhat well stocked, there's a ton of staff and it's 24 hours. The thing that makes it an absolutely terrible place to shop: no prices under any items. When I ask a representative how much any particular item is, they have to check on the price scanner.... I can't decide which exact item I want to buy without knowing how much each item costs. I don't know about anyone else but I have to stick to a budget when I go shopping and Nuthouse makes that nearly impossible. Try to avoid unless you are shopping for only 1 or 2 things or it's after every other hardware store in the city has closed unless they put price labels on all the items. read more

Buyer beware! I really wanted to like this place. I mean it's huge, open 24 hours, it's locally owned probably, and pretty close to my apartment. The the customer service was not amazing when I first went in to purchase, so I should have been tipped off (despite there being around 10 ppl working on the first floor, it was near impossible to get someone to help us). However, it was really appalling when I tried to return something. Despite having the original receipt & original packaging and I spent around $200 at the place in various space saving apartment items, but it didn't matter to them because no one even looked at my receipt. The item that I tried to return was a double bike rack, that I would consider defective since it didn't stay up on my wall. they wouldn't accept the return because it had been 'used'. Obviously, If i hadn't attempted to use it, I wouldn't have known that it didn't work. I was told that only a manager could approve this type of return, but I went twice morning and afternoon on the same day and the manager was 'out' both times. They said I should try back in the morning. When I asked if I could leave the bike rack there until the morning (it's bulky and I have 2 kids with me) they refused, so I knew they were probably lying. There's no way that a huge store like that just wouldn't have a manager around. Finally, when the employee decided he was done talking to me, all of the employees just left the store and waited outside until I left. Neither professional or mature. I've never encountered anything like it. Btw, The bike rack was installed by a professional contractor who builds houses for a living, so not exactly an inexperienced /idiot mistake could account for this problem. The worst hardware store in midtown. My roommate and I went to the manager for advice on fixing holes in the wall. He recommended several items, however, he failed to mention that we would need to cut around the current hole to fit the replacement wall into. The manager also told us that we would be able to TRY out the product and see if it works. If not, he would give us a full refund. When we went in the next day to return the product, the cashier said that they have a strict no return policy. If we open the product, it can't be returned. First of all, ridiculous logic. How are we supposed to see if the product will work on our wall if we can't even open the packaging ? Nothing happened to the product, nothing happened to the packaging. The only difference is that the foil covering the packaging is now torn off. When we tried to speak to the manager, he was always unavailable. After speaking to a worker there, he couldn't believe the manager recommended us that product in the first place. He said a simple metal mesh is enough to cover a small hole and is very simple to install. One star for the managers being dodgy when trying to discuss the return policy/terrible advice. read more

The staff is a slow-moving inattentive circus. They defer to each other whenever possible and provide lackadaisical answers to most questions. In other cases, they simply have no idea what you're talking about -- an odd occurrence in a hardware store of all places. Asked for the location of a stud-finder today and was sent to no less than 5 employees before one lazily decided to walk me to their 4th floor. The housewares items on the second floor are overpriced (as is just about everything here), but, again, comprehensive. You're paying for the convenience, and that's a reasonable trade-off. The staff seemed perfectly pleasant to me. Having read the other reviews, I guess I would be clear about their return policy before making a major purchase. This place is wild, a total nuthouse. har har. I'm really jealous it's actually not in my neighborhood, I often need hardware supplies in the middle of the night and have to just scheme and plan for when the store opens. Plus being 24/7 means they're open on sundays unlike most places. The people were relatively friendly at first, after breaking the no dog rule and bringing in two, my friend and I were greeted by a friendly lady who asked for our pups names and didn't even mention the sign on the door stating no pets allowed. We carried them and they made no mess so I don't feel that bad about it, so don't give me shizzz. We ended up finding a few area rugs we thought could be great buys so we picked them out, of course neither had tags on them and we were informed it'd be awhile for them to look it up but they would. Of course while we were there we got a call that we had to go so we were suddenly thrown into the circumstance of being in a hurry. After they finally found one of the rug's prices and my friend made a comment about being willing to wait just not really having 20 min the owner rudely shouted back at us that it wouldn't be 20 min. I can't remember exactly what he said but it was mean and nasty and really not needed. The two sales associates kind of looked at each other like it's something that happens on the regular, so I took no personal offense. I believe this was the owner- although I am not actually sure. Overall I feel like if you need something and you need it NOW nuthouse will have it, and it won't be a total rip off, but it also won't be the cheapest or most unique option. read more

Yikes. First of all, the service was terrible. The store is split between multiple floors of the building. They told us to go to the 4th floor for drill bits, and after hiking up four floors of stairs we found the fourth floor was locked. My husband hiked all the way back down to find another attendant, who then came up to cuss us out for being up there. They had what we needed, but the people working there are certifiably nutso. The lady who checked us out babbled on for like five minutes about how the payroll was messed up, and how she was fired from other jobs. read more

I was looking for a very specific paint and after calling around to several hardware and paint stores, a gent from the Sherwin Williams on 21st referred me to Nuthouse. I called ahead since it's a trek from where i am in Brooklyn to see if they had what i was looking for. The man who answered the phone was pleasant and helpful and was able to tell me that yes they carried that specific brand and asked what colours i wanted so he could make sure they had them in stock so i didn't waste a trip. After less than 2 minutes on hold, he informed me they had both colours in stock. I thanked him and hung up. I hopped on the subway a little while later. Once at the store, it only took a few minutes for one of the staff members to help me locate my paint. There was no wait to check out and i was on my way in no time. I will gladly come into Manhattan to give these guys my business in the future. read more

The idea of a 24 hour hardware store is a great one, especially for people with long working hours during the week. The execution of this particular one is good, but leaves a little to be desired. Firstly the organization of the store. The downstairs holds mostly small construction supplies while the upstairs has more household items. The basement has a moderate lumber selection and the 3rd floor holds a warehouse type storage room. Both the basement and 3rd floor are only available with an employee. It is quite bizarre when ask for a particular item and they lead you to crawl through piles in a storage room to find it. But hey, they have a really large selection and if that's what it takes - so be it. The convenience in unparalleled. Their prices are a little high, but not outrageous. I once had an issue where I purchased duct tape, and while walking out I realized it was 26 dollars. Turns out it was a problem in their system, but I am glad I looked at the receipt and they allowed me to return it. Not sure if they fixed the problem or not...Also the staff is a little inconsistent. They sometimes can be incredibly helpful and friendly, and other times I've felt that I was inconveniencing them for asking a question. Anyway, this place is great to have in the neighborhood, but if I'm not crunched for time or its at odd hours, I may find myself looking somewhere else.. read more

This is one of my favorite places in Murray Hill/Kips Bay. It's a hardware store but it's more of a super store for the "way too busy" manhattanite. There are 7 levels to this store. You can get AC units, hangers, light bulbs, keys replicated, gatorades, shot glasses, pots and pans, picture hangers, soap, bath mats, and really anything you'd need for your home. I've taken advantage of the fact that it's 24 hours, many times. Hungover at 6am to grab Gatorade or at 1am to get a new fan because my AC unit stopped working, they're always open! The staff roams the floor but you have to ask for help so don't be afraid to seek guidance, there's an elevator to take you from floor to floor if you can't do the stairs. After living in Kips Bay for 4 years I've come here numerous times and would recommend it to anyone who has a home goods need! read more
