FINALLY! A Nutrition Depot store that is NOT a franchise! I signed up for Nutrition Depot's e-mail list and every month I'd get an e-mail for their monthly specials and the two closest stores to me (Westheimer & Bunker Hill) are franchise stores and it's always a hit and miss with them. Sometimes they would honor the special prices and sometimes they won't. I was running low on my protein powder and so it happened that their July 2013 special was Phase 8 protein for $29.99 for a 4.4-lb tub. I went to the store on Westheimer and they said that they'd match the price. However, they were matching the price for the 2.2-lb tub!!! Regular price $34.99 and they were going to sell it to me for $29.99. No way, dude!! That's like double the price, still. I went to this location and they had the specials flyer posted on the window! I didn't even have to ask. They had the protein powder jugs out and ready. No questions asked. And the dude that was helping me was knowledgeable and really helpful (granted, I was the only customer at the store at the time). I don't ask many questions about any of their supplements because I pretty much know what I need and I'm pretty in-the-know about the latest supplements that are out in the market. However, I do ask about popular items, flavors, etc, etc. I was also looking for a new pre-workout supplement and he gave plenty of recommendations. I wasn't sure which one I wanted and I wasn't willing to drop my money on something that I wasn't going to like so I asked for samples. Of course he gave me a sample. Also, when I was paying, I saw a bunch of nutrition depot t-shirts. I just went ahead and asked, "hey, could I get a free t-shirt?" and he just gave it to me. At the time, I spent $60 for two tubs of protein powder. So, if you ask for it, I think they'd just give it to you. I think in the future, I'd just go to this location for their specials. It can sometimes be over whelming when looking for vitamins and supplements. With all the various brands on the market, it can be tough figuring out what to buy. What you will get here at Nutrition Depot is something rare now days and that is pure honesty. Just like what Peter C. mentioned, ask for Byron. He will give you can honest advice on what you buy. Unlike other stores he is not going to automatically suggest the most expensive product. Chances are any product that he recommends he has either taken or is a popular item. If he doesn't have that item, he can always order it for you. Prices are always quite reasonable, typically way cheaper then GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. There have been a couple times where I could have purchased something online but I choose to buy from him anyways. If you are looking for a vitamin or supplement, I highly recommend coming here. This place is the bomb dot com. If you are like me and currently obsessed with Quest protein bars (the best protein bar ever made, for serious), this is the place to be. The owner, Byron, is super friendly and helpful. Quest bars are $2.50 each here, but if you buy them by the box (of 12), they're $2 each and you can mix and match as you please. One time they told me product A mixes well with product B. Another guy who worked there told me that it's very stupid to mix product A with product B. It's really obvious that the two don't mix to some.. because one was designed for weight loss and one for weight gain... but of course there are complicated factors to consider. The main point: They both gave opposite advice. They both pretended to be completely confident. I've made maybe 30 purchases from Nutrition Depot in my life, and I usually just buy a lot of stuff that I research on my own. But every time I go I am curious as to what's new on the market, if there are any recommendations. I feel like I'm paying $100 for a nice bulk amount of vitamins and healthy stuff, but I also get a nice little lesson at the same time. I know that I've asked hundreds of questions.. and I've never once received an "I don't know" or "Let me look into that...". They always know. And someone was wrong at least once. And I read a lot of stuff on my own. Sometimes they offer their own opinions that conflict with opinions that I read. But I think it's ok for them to say "Some say this, I believe this.. but there is a debate". Unfortunately I always get: "The answer is (my answer)". Oh by the way, one time they kind of annoyed be by offering me a free t-shirt because I purchased $100, but the same guy obviously forgot that he gave a free t-shirt to the guy who was there before me who bought like a protein bar, and more importantly that the same guy gave me the same free t-shirt like 2 days before when buying something for like $20. I hate it when I walk into a store, prepared to dump money there, but then the salesman has to do things like that so they can brag to their friends about their ability to sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman wearing white gloves. The sale was already made when I left my car. If you want to give me something for free, give it to me for free. Don't make up stuff. Some good points: I know for the most part a lot of their advice is good. And they pretty much have a fundamental understanding of the stuff they sell. I can also tell that management emphasizes education about products. One of the strongest things about this place: Their owner or manager.. he is really legit. And I think for the most part he trains his staff pretty well. Maybe he's just a really smooth salesman but for the most part he's a straight shooter and he will call it the way he sees it. He's smart enough to know that customers value honesty over being a know it all. He seems like the type that will say "I don't really know for sure" when he really might have a decent hypothesis. That's honorable. But from my experience in the weight lifting/nutrition pseudoscience world, most people think they know everything, and they are like basically the greatest scientists in the world who aren't polluted by the false information everyone else gets. For the most part, vitamin science, supplements etc. is not "solved" and definitely not black and white as these poser wannabe know it alls claim it is. Life would be better if more people just admitted they don't know something. read more

No matter how hard you train, you're bound to hit a plateau, sooner or later. It's annoying because you're doing everything right but not seeing the gains like you had before. Well, this happened to me a week ago. I was doing an hour of cardio, adding higher weights and then it just stopped. My bench actually went down by 10lbs! I was feeling lethargic at the gym and wasn't getting the same pump I used to get. So, I figured I needed a supplement or booster get me to the next level. Last night was the third time I've stopped in this store to get supplements. All three times have been really good. This store is light years ahead of national chain stores like GNC because the sales reps are familiar with the products. Plus, nobody tries to push a stupid "Gold Card" on you! I dealt with Kyle in the past but last night I got to meet the actual owner, Byron. It was five minutes past closing and he still let me in. He's a very social guy who seems like he's been in the fitness industry for a while. I got the vibe that he used to be a personal trainer (not sure, just a hunch). I told him my problem and he gave me some really good advice. Basically, he said I was overtraining, not sleeping enough, and not spacing out my heavy lifting days. It made sense and he suggested an alternate routine to try. All this happened before he sold me anything. I ended up buying some GAT Pre-Workout Formula to give me a boost of energy and focus + AllFlex Joint Juice for days when I do heavy cardio on the treadmill. He threw in a couple samples of Amino as well. I tried out the GAT yesterday night and definitely felt the difference.
