She is willing to change directions when something is not working and she is also willing to "try it your way" when you come in with thoughts and ideas for a treatment plan that you want to try (as long as it it safe), even if it is not the approach that she would normally advise. She will tell you when you need more advanced or specialized care than she can provide in her office and will refer you to an appropriate specialist. She is always open and honest with her patients. It turns out that's true. But it also seems to be true that for other criteria like a low-intervention approach to birth, he's the best ob/gyn in Charlottesville (by default - he seems to be the only low-intervention ob/gyn here!). So, you have to pick your poison. Or maybe enough women telling him we don't like his unnecessarily strict, critical stance could influence the way he relates to patients? One can dare to hope. Context: I moved to Charlottesville about two months ago and began asking for recommendations for a good ob/gyn. Edward Wolanski was a name that kept coming up. Friends and friends-of-friends recommended him because they said he tends to be low intervention - he serves as the back-up for a midwife, which is rare and usually indicates an appreciation for a natural approach to childbirth. The one nuance to all the glowing reviews was that he could be brusque and unnecessarily strict about weight, having once told a patient, "We don't want a chubby Christa!" (Except he used her name, of course.) I took this info with a grain of salt, but sure enough, during our consultation visit, one of the first things Wolanski brought up was his recommendation that pregnant women should only gain 20-25 pounds during a pregnancy: this goes against the medically recognized guideline of 25-35 pounds for women who, like me, are in a healthy weight range at the start of pregnancy. I questioned whether his adapted guidelines set up potentially harmful expectations for women who have struggled with eating disorders, and he actually responded, "I've had many patients who have dealt with anorexia, and they tend to do quite well during pregnancy because they watch what they eat." Uh, yeah, that's what anorexics do, but I think our definition of "doing quite well" are not the same. That's the bad news. The worse news is that Wolanski may still be the best (only??) ob/gyn in Charlottesville for women like me, who value a low-intervention approach to childbirth. In the past week, I've researched ob/gyns in Cville like it's my job, and while Martha Jefferson Hospital is more advanced in terms of holistic care of mama + baby, I have yet to find another ob/gyn practice that is recommended for being accepting of a more natural approach to childbirth. I'll update this if/when I do (and if you have recommendations - message me!!)

I love this place and these people…read more My husband is active duty USAF, and currently deployed since I was nearly half way thru my pregnancy. It's been emotional to put it gently. However, the wonderful women at The Birth Centre of Charlottesville have been by my side during this difficult season. Together, they create a peaceful, safe, and welcoming environment for expecting mommas. I just delivered my 3rd baby, and I'm so thankful I was able to have her here. I have two other children, who were delivered at nearby hospitals. If I could go back and come to the Birth Centre instead, I would. Janna and Millie cared for baby and I so well after my delivery. I'm so thankful for them. I hope more mommas realize giving birth in a welcoming, loving, warm environment like this one, where you are heard and respected, is so much better than most L&D hospital experiences. I'd like to add, the waiting area is also wonderful if you have other kiddos. There are such fun toys for them to play with. I was shamed, manipulated, disrespected, lied to, coerced into making decisions that were not in the best interest of myself and the baby. I felt small, disempowered, unsupported, uncared for, vulnerable, and violated. I have posted a longer review on Google and Facebook (although it seemed they disable the reviews of FB so you might not see it). If I had stayed at the Birth Center, I wouldn't have dilated. My labor stopped progressing and at 7cm I regressed to 6cm because my cervix was swollen but it took begging the midwives to take me to the hospital 6 times before they finally relented. I am certain that if I hadn't gone to UVA, my baby, I, or both of us would have died at the Birth Center. Unfortunately, I am so traumatized by the mistreatment, coercion, lying, belittling, and manipulation that I experienced at the Birth Center that I don't think I will ever be able to trust midwives ever again. It has taken me more than a year to write this review because I experienced PTSD whenever I thought about how horrible they were and how my baby's life was endangered by their carelessness. I hope this helps someone else avoid this experience.

Dr. Lord has been my PCP for over Seven Years and continuing to have him as my PCP is well worth the Hour and a Half Drive each way. So I most heartedly recommend Dr. Lord and his new practice at WellFamily Medicine. My experience with the Front Office and with Dr. Lord's Nurse have been absolutely positive! In fact, on my first visit, I accidentally reopened s wound on my forearm and the receptionist immediately called for Dr. Lord's Nurse, who took me back to a room, cleaned the blood from my arm, and bandaged my wound.
