I've only used the gym and the pool so my review is specific only to those facilities…read more The pool is a little chilly, as others have said, however it isn't a spa pool, it's a swimming pool, so it's going to be chilly and the point is that you swim to warm up. The pool area and changing rooms are broadly clean, with enough locker space. The gym is pretty well equipped, but at its busy times you will struggle to find usable machines and equipment. The users aren't very good at replacing equipment so you can spend a while looking around for certain weights. And the rules regarding not taking in coats and bags aren't enforced, so finding mat space, for example, can become difficult and you end up having to shove some strangers bag to the side because you can't find the owner. Without wanting to sound like I'm young-person-bashing, the after school groups seem to use the gym more as a hang-out, and people of all ages don't seem to have developed the gym etiquette you find in other places regarding being sat on equipment looking at your phone for prolonged periods, denying the equipment to others. The student groups also tend to leave a lot of their belongings scattered in the changing rooms instead of using the lockers which are plentiful. The staff are very friendly, but it would be preferable if they enforced some of the rules & policies. And as a minor criticism I'd prefer lockers you can padlock instead of needing a £1 coin. Overall, it's fine if you're not a core-hours user - it would definitely be better if the policies were enforced, but if you're someone trying to do some exercise after work, particularly in term-time, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

My biggest complaint would be the swimming pool changing rooms which are way too hot. Also there is occassionally a problem with the heating of the learner pool, but when you complain you get told that it is within regulations. When childrens lips are going blue in the lessons, I would say it is too cold despite what the regulations say.

Wickwoods is a beautiful country club just outside of Brighton. It's location is fantastic -…read morenestled in beautiful countryside just the other side of the Downs, yet less than 15 minutes from my house by car. The gym facilities are great. Admittedly, it's not the biggest gym in the world, but it has plenty of equipment to get a great workout including all the usual cardiac machines, weights machines, free weights (this area is very lady friendly, unlike other gyms I have experienced in the past), and TRX. They also have limited membership so the gym is never really crowded and I've certainly never had to wait for any of the machines. That said, my gym inductions weren't that successful, and for this Wickwoods loses a star. The first induction I had was good but the instructor was leaving the next day, and forgot to write down the program she had developed for me. The second time, the girl was incredibly moody as she had been booked by her colleague and didn't really have time. One very quick, abrupt tour of the gym later I had a program written down but a slightly sour taste in my mouth from the way I was treated. It's a shame as everyone else I have come across at the club has been really pleasant. As well as the gym, they have a studio room where they run numerous classes. The classes run by the gym instructors are better in my experience, the others can be a little 80's in style!! There is a beautiful pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room area that is just perfect to use after a hard workout in the gym. They also have inside and outside tennis courts, tennis coaching and tournaments - I may pick up my tennis racket again when the weather cheers up! I am yet to try the restaurant, although the carvery looks and smells fantastic on a Sunday - book in advance though, they never have room for us when we turn up after the gym. The bar area is a great place to stop for a coffee or something stronger - you have earned it by this stage of course! There are also treatment rooms which I plan to use in the very near future - there has to be some reward for all this hard work!

A full programme of events is scheduled throughout the week with various free-swim blocks built in. The competition and training pools are standard. The leisure pool is a round shelving pool with a wave machine, lazy river/rapids ride and a couple of spas. There's also a children's paddling pool. There are three flumes of varying sizes. The changing areas are poor standard and cold. Cubicles are small and there are insufficient family changing rooms. Lockers are provided. There's a hairdryer bank in the stairwell. Toddler sessions are busy (although numbers are limited) and toys are used in the water.

The center offers the expected range of classes from keep-fit to more team based activities. The amenities are good with clean changing areas. There is also a full gym for exercise heads and a decent looking swimming pool. The staff are fairly helpful and identified by branded tee shirts. There is also a canteen that serves a basic range of foods including jacket potatoes and chips, beans and other fried snacks. Being a place of fitness, I find this a little bizarre, but I suppose they serve what the public want. Go figure! There are also glass backed squash courts and you can hire courts for badminton or basketball. All in all a pretty decent sports center for the town, but you will need a car or a bus ride to get there as it is located on the outskirts of Burgess Hill.

The pin activated some 10 minutes after I had completed the registration so I had to wait trying to unlock the door for a few minutes until I finally was allowed in. The gym itself has a lot of cardio and strength machines, all brand new. But the only one available for back extension was out of order. If you are used to train with dumbells and barebells like I am then you might find this gym a bit disappointing. There are only two barebells available plus one smith machine. The floor is made rubber so it's not stable when you squat or power clean. There is a reasonable number of dumbbells but I guess that there might not be enough at rush hours.

The Gym itself is very clean, bright and spacious, there's plenty of cardio equipment and a good amount of floor space. The free weights area is modest in size and it can be very difficult to get a look in at the busiest parts of the day (early to late evening) there's a decent amount of equipment but it's missing a few machines that gyms may look at as luxuries (I long for a supported HLR rack) so it's fairly basic, but with some knowledge you can improvise and use what's there, and with that being said, for the price and location it's a steal.

The fitness centre's selection of cardio equipment includes several of these really awesome cross-trainers...They're elliptical machines with optional ramps and give a pretty intense workout. The weight machines are set up more like a circuit training room - all neatly spaced out around the edges, instead of crammed in to each other like in the Sports Complex. And although the cardio machines don't have televisions built in, they do overlook one of the sports halls for some live entertainment. The Sports Centre runs several fitness groups and drop-in classes throughout the year, which are a good way to mix up your workout and prevent boredom. Also available on site: A Therapy Room that releases the relaxing scents of aromatherapy each time the door opens. I've yet to take advantage, but the prices seem quite reasonable. Perhaps that will be a Christmas gift to myself.

The price is very affordable - you can get a year's membership for just £130 -, the service is friendly and efficient, and the amount of gym equipment available for use is very good. Even during busy times there's plenty of different machines to use, including a plethora of running machines, cycles, rowing machines, and weights. Definitely comes highly recommended.
