During my years as a student and PhD this was a place a visited several times with my friends or family. Either for a lunch, but mostly for a good cup of coffee with something sweet from their patisserie heaven. What makes me appreciate NK more than many other coffee-places in Umeå is the combination of well-preserved history and intricately small treats that shy away from the usual over-sized pastry, buns and cookies that always is a sugar overload and leaves at least me borderline nauseous. I'm not much of a sweet tooth, I prefer the more subtle approach to pastries and cookies, and for that particular reason NK is a notch above the rest.
This place opened way back in 1927 in the very same location as of now. It's a two story complex. The first floor holds their shop where you can pick up everything from pastries, bread, cookies, breakfast to go such as coffee and a freshly baked baguette made from sourdough. Since the renovation in 2013 they have a couple of tables for serving also on the first floor. But if we're going to talk about what really makes this place stand out is walking past the shop counter and up the marble staircase with each step more wobblier and uneven than the previous. This is due to so many people walking up and down these stairs for almost 90 years and the steps have actually changed form over time. Upstairs is the main serving room, and the entire place breathes history. From the tables to the carpets to the curtains to the colors to the chairs; just everything.
The coffee is always nice, the sandwiches too, and the pastries are lustfully amazing (at least those I have tasted). Whenever I'm in Umeå nowadays I try and pay this little gem a visit, mostly due to past experiences, laughters and stories I've shared with friends - it's a little place with a lot of personal history. And such things never go out of style.
So perhaps you're wondering, why only a 3 star rating? Because in my book a 3 star rating is good. 4 is outstandingly exceptional and 5 is for the very few places that launches my senses in the stratosphere. That said, NK is a coffee-house above the rest, and if you don't take my word for it - pay them a visit and make up your mind. I'm certain you won't regret it. read more
