The Youngest Volcanic Flow in the Lunar Volcanic Field…read more I recently had the unique opportunity to visit Black Rock Lava Flow during my nearby visit to Lunar Crater. Not very much is known about the Lunar Crater Volcanic Field except that the last volcanic activity in the area was 15,000 years ago at the black rock flow, this is do to the need for further studies of the rock to be completed by geologists. However some historians believe the cinder cones to be fairly young and forming around the Holocene Era, which is 11,700 before AD 2000 to the Present-day with reference to looking at the types of rocks. But according to several of the ancient faults in the area pre-dating from the Pleistocene Era from 2.5million years ago to 11,700 would have the formation and eruptions during the end of the Pleistocene Era, hence the reason last activity is estimated to be around 15,000 years ago. Believe it or not there is an immense amount of prehistorical volcanism in the state of Nevada. So much so that its bound to keep any rockhound or enthusiast busy with hours of intense research. The Black Rock Lava Flow is located on the Northern side of Highway 6 and it is mainly composed of a mostly basalt type of flow that at the time the magma pushed up but since the cinder cone could not support the weight and pressures. Resulting in the lava pushing out of the side of the cinder cone and thus not creating a violent eruption like most would think. **Overall, Granted its in the middle of the boonies in Nevada, just the shear amazement and wonder of this flow has sparked a newfound interest volcanism as a whole. I found it extremely interesting that there is several other locations also in Nevada, perhaps some extinct volcano could be just under your nose, waiting for you to find it, to learn and explore the mysteries of the great outdoors. Only-in-Nevada experience [Tonopah NV]…read more We pass by the town of Tonopah on Highway 95 South if we take this route heading to Las Vegas but this time we actually stayed overnight in this historic town and stayed at the Mizpah Hotel, a member of Historic Hotels of America. It was either here or the Clown Motel... no clowns for me! Although housekeeping allowed me take a peek inside Room #107. So creepy with all the clown motif (separate review). The motel is known for its collection of over 2,000 clowns and the museum and gift shop has been quite an attraction for tourists. The motel is not only a destination for tourists, but probably also for wandering spirits from the cemetery next door. Yup, the motel is situated next to the Old Tonopah Cemetery which was active from 1901 to 1911 and where over 300 graves can be found. Before leaving the town we took some time to read some of the engravings on the plots and the manner of how they died including classic Wild West problems, such as shootouts, murders, and suicides, also victims of plague and fire. Tonopah was nicknamed the Queen of the Silver Camps for its mining-rich history and is halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. I have been wanting to do an overnight stay here and I finally had a chance to. We arrived a little late in the evening and so we just grabbed a burger from next door at A&W. They had the best Bacon & Swiss Double Burger w/ Garlic Aioli! We left early following day. Businesses were still closed so we were not able to do any of the mining tours or check out any museums. This is a hidden gem worth stopping to see. The area is spread out with dozens of cars planted…read morenose-first into the ground, creating what looks like an apocalyptic landscape of vehicles that fell from the sky. Many of the cars are covered in colorful graffiti and artwork, which makes the whole place feel like a giant open-air art installation. When I visited there were only a few other people around, so it was quiet and easy to explore. I was even able to get some great drone footage without worrying about crowds. Definitely a unique stop if you're traveling through the area.

There are two museums in this town, both well worth checking out. If you do a little google search you'll see there's several historic old buildings you can take a peak at. I've included photos of several of them. Be sure to check out the Clown Motel right next to the historic cemetery. Even though we weren't staying there the owner was nice enough to let us come in and take some photos. We stayed at the Mizpah Hotel. Supposedly a haunted hotel. Even if you're not staying there go inside and have a drink at the bar. The place is amazing. Rather then just speeding through this town slow down a bit and enjoy it.

It was New Year's Day, and I walked around looking for coffee while the car was charging. Most businesses were closed, I saw that the cafe at the bookstore said "Open" but the bookstore was closed. The cafe was closed too. There is a second had equipment store that sells ski, hiking, biking gear, and also a fly fishing store. Both places didn't allow me to use their restrooms....I would have liked to visit some of the interesting stores, but they were closed. I like the feel of the main street shopping area, feels like West Yellowstone.

My favorite bakery and Japanese restaurant all within walking distance.. Just a small town gal who appreciates easy and simple ways of life.. So pretty right now with the fall colors.. By the 1940's it was a typical middle of nowhere town with a gas station. By 1993 the gas station was closed due to tank leakage and by 1994 the town was deserted. There are the remnants of multiple building and the foundation of the restaurant that burned down decades ago. It is a fun place to poke around but beyond that it is a stop at best as there are no services till you get to Tonopah. The oh so bad film (I watched it as prep for the trip) "The Stranger" was filmed here (Think modern day High Plains Drifter with bikers) If you love abandoed stuff this place is a must stop
