Many of the cars are covered in colorful graffiti and artwork, which makes the whole place feel like a giant open-air art installation. When I visited there were only a few other people around, so it was quiet and easy to explore. I was even able to get some great drone footage without worrying about crowds. Definitely a unique stop if you're traveling through the area.

The Youngest Volcanic Flow in the Lunar Volcanic Field…read more I recently had the unique opportunity to visit Black Rock Lava Flow during my nearby visit to Lunar Crater. Not very much is known about the Lunar Crater Volcanic Field except that the last volcanic activity in the area was 15,000 years ago at the black rock flow, this is do to the need for further studies of the rock to be completed by geologists. However some historians believe the cinder cones to be fairly young and forming around the Holocene Era, which is 11,700 before AD 2000 to the Present-day with reference to looking at the types of rocks. But according to several of the ancient faults in the area pre-dating from the Pleistocene Era from 2.5million years ago to 11,700 would have the formation and eruptions during the end of the Pleistocene Era, hence the reason last activity is estimated to be around 15,000 years ago. Believe it or not there is an immense amount of prehistorical volcanism in the state of Nevada. So much so that its bound to keep any rockhound or enthusiast busy with hours of intense research. The Black Rock Lava Flow is located on the Northern side of Highway 6 and it is mainly composed of a mostly basalt type of flow that at the time the magma pushed up but since the cinder cone could not support the weight and pressures. Resulting in the lava pushing out of the side of the cinder cone and thus not creating a violent eruption like most would think. **Overall, Granted its in the middle of the boonies in Nevada, just the shear amazement and wonder of this flow has sparked a newfound interest volcanism as a whole. I found it extremely interesting that there is several other locations also in Nevada, perhaps some extinct volcano could be just under your nose, waiting for you to find it, to learn and explore the mysteries of the great outdoors. Only-in-Nevada experience [Tonopah NV]…read more We pass by the town of Tonopah on Highway 95 South if we take this route heading to Las Vegas but this time we actually stayed overnight in this historic town and stayed at the Mizpah Hotel, a member of Historic Hotels of America. It was either here or the Clown Motel... no clowns for me! Although housekeeping allowed me take a peek inside Room #107. So creepy with all the clown motif (separate review). The motel is known for its collection of over 2,000 clowns and the museum and gift shop has been quite an attraction for tourists. The motel is not only a destination for tourists, but probably also for wandering spirits from the cemetery next door. Yup, the motel is situated next to the Old Tonopah Cemetery which was active from 1901 to 1911 and where over 300 graves can be found. Before leaving the town we took some time to read some of the engravings on the plots and the manner of how they died including classic Wild West problems, such as shootouts, murders, and suicides, also victims of plague and fire. Tonopah was nicknamed the Queen of the Silver Camps for its mining-rich history and is halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. I have been wanting to do an overnight stay here and I finally had a chance to. We arrived a little late in the evening and so we just grabbed a burger from next door at A&W. They had the best Bacon & Swiss Double Burger w/ Garlic Aioli! We left early following day. Businesses were still closed so we were not able to do any of the mining tours or check out any museums. About 10 miles after passing thru the East Gate ( of Yosemite). Cute little resort town , love the fact that there are no chain restaurants/ coffee shops in the whole entire town. No McDonald's or Starbucks in sight. We stopped at this cute little old school diner called Nicely's for BLT sandwich and fries ... and a huge Mono Lake size ice cream sundae:) All delicious and friendly service. After our tummies are full , we drove to see Mono Lake. To me , this lake is just okay. Not spectacularly pretty because no trees or vegetation around the lake , looking dried. Not much water in the lake. However , wait till night time. We went to see the Tufas in the dark . OMG!!!!!!!!!!! We could see the Milky Way and gazillion stars in the dark sky. I had NEVER seen that many stars in my life. Simply AMAZING!!!!!! No words can describe. Well worth the 10 hour ( round trip ) drive. Next morning we drive up to Convict Lake, Virginia Lake and June Lake. Snow capped mountains towering over the crystal clear lakes ... the changing colors of the leaves , cool crisp autumn air ... breathtakingly beautiful.

Around every corner it's an astounding picturesque view and with the nice strong winds that are blowing today it just gives you that nice breath of fresh air while hiking. Get a cabin and just relax. It's a good getaway from the big city. You won't regret it. You get to see all the wild animals. Some even come down to your cabin. Just have your camera or cell phone ready to take pictures. Watch out that some of the animals don't use you as food. I wonder if there's Bears out here??? Definitely a place I would come back to

There are several hotels, a Motel 6, Denny's and gas stations and restaurants. I've stayed in Beatty several times on my way to Vegas or from Vegas and it's not bad. No, it's no resort, but it's a comfortable place to stay. If you're planning on visiting Death Valley, the lodging here is way cheaper then what's available in the park and the park is just 45 minutes away. Death Valley involves a lot of driving, so a little more isn't a big deal. US Highway 95 is the main road through Nye County. The speed limit is 70mph most of the way. You only need to slow down for the small towns you'll pass through, and I do mean please obey the posted speed limits as speed traps are set up. Tonopah is the county seat and the biggest town in Nye County. Several fast food places will feed you on the road as there is gas at many places as well. Lodging is available in Tonopah and is probably a better place to stay than Beatty.
