The students and instructors at O2 are incredible! They offer a variety of classes and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I joined about two years ago for kickboxing (PJ, Chris, and Justin are incredible), but really appreciated that the membership allows you to divide up your classes however you like. I ended up taking up jiu jitsu and recently started kali escrima with Ian - my only regret is that I didn't start sooner. Marital arts is such a humbling experience, and walking into a new gym can be so intimidating. O2 is perfect for every experience level from the individual who has only seen action movies to the high level grappler and those who spar regularly. As a whole, they call it the O2 fam and it truly feels like it! The gym is actually owned by Mike and Chris, two brothers, who truly give it a family feel. They, and all the coaches, are amazing at what they do and lead their classes with expertise and a lot of humor. And as another reviewer mentioned, this is definitely somewhere where you have to check your ego at the door because it's a fam and we have to take care of each other. O2 is on the second floor above Goodwill along Kamehameha. There's plenty of parking and the lot entrance is on Hekaha. During the pandemic they kept the gym open and prioritized membership safety with online classes then grappling with dummies and working in pods. They offer times throughout the day and on weekends. Very informative and willing to help you to be sure you understand why you have to do what you have to do to protect yourself! Glad that I had a male partner and telling him to grab me like you mean it was great! Ok hurtful but great! Only because you don't know how much pressure your attacker will be having on you! Although the more pressure he gave me was better to know how much I have to get out of it. We all should learn a thing or two about how to defend ourselves. The tenants are sticklers about parking, so make sure you park in a place that's not directly in front of another business. Safest place to park is at the ends of the parking lot. O2 Martial Arts Academy offer a variety of classes for all ages including Gracie Jiujitsu, boxing, kickboxing, Kali/Escrima, and wrestling. It was highly enjoyable and served a lot of practical lessons everyone should have a basic working knowledge of to get away from potentially dangerous situations. Although there are a handful of practitioners from town, most of everyone you meet here live this side of the island. Great centralized location, parking is free, instructors are top notch, rates are great for what they offer and you are guaranteed to make good friends with a group of great men and women. If you want to become a jiujitsu practitioner and want to learn self-defense, O2 has all you need from highly decorated black belts and owners, Mike and Chris Onzuka and black belt, Kaleo Hosaka. All trained and certified from hawaii's first own Gracie, Master Relson Gracie. O2 offers day and night brazilian jiujitsu classes for adults and children, kickboxing and wrestling in the afternoons, and Kali-escrima. Classes are about two hours for jiujitsu and hour and a half for kickboxing. This academy offers basically all you need from ground to stand-up. Facility is located on the second floor right over goodwill aiea, fronting Kamehameha Highway next to Best Buy. Excellent jiu-jitsu and a great family environment!

Unfortunately, as expected the truth of this story is being misconstrued by this academy. My husband did indeed pull our daughter away from the training session quietly and we left with out saying a word. One of the parents was concerned and stopped us on our way out and asked us if our daughter was ok as she was tapping multiple times and their student never stopped with one of their instructors watching the whole situation occur. There was nothing that happened that even interrupted the class. The parent told my husband to wait outside and he would get the main instructor. The main instructor and my husband were talking, and nobody was threatened as both are professionals. Neither my husband nor the instructor even got loud with one another. It was a relief that they were talking with one another as they are both have martial arts background and a passion for not only the martial art form but the teaching of the youth as well. Funny how the owner wants to make this into a drama session. The main conversation was that he was unaware of what was going on and he apologized to my daughter and tried to calm her down. Mistakes happen and not every action can be witnessed. We were making him aware that his other instructors were not protecting the students when needed. We understand that. When we witnessed our daughter tapping and nothing being done about it with an instructor watching we had enough. However, as a reputable gym as claimed you are, you need to accept that you cannot see everything occur and accept responsibility, not put blame on the students. You don't attack a child or their skill. That is weak and expected when you are in the wrong. The students are there to learn and to know they are safe. As stated, no one ever told us they were prepping for a tournament or even addressed us before class. Yes, my daughter did hold her own but the moves being used were not a typical sparring session or "rolling" as they call it at martial art academies. We have found a reputable gym that teaches technics, honor, courage and to do the right thing and commitment to the Gracie name and legacy. We know the history of the martial art and know the honor that is behind the name. Just because you may have been given a black belt by a Gracie doesn't mean you carry his honor or his legacy. It is apparent that when the master turned his back that his honor and traditions were not upheld. We wish you all the best and we are just informing the community to do you research and find the best gym for their children. This gym was not it for us and we are advising the community to go elsewhere. Our daughter has found the best gym on the island for her and has excelled once again. read more
