He held the door open for us to go in and immediately we were greeted by the Pastor. He is so amazing! He asked about us and what we were doing on our road trip. We connected and shared stories for 5-10 minutes, we felt very welcomed at this point. We went into the church and got greeted and welcomed by 10 more members. It's so cool to go into a church where the members are so involved at actually care about their church. The Pastor's wife came to say hi to us as well. She is such a sweet heart! Seek her out! It was cool to talk to her about our experience and theirs through travel. Whenever you enter a church your greeted and feel loved because your with your "Church family" , but this was different. We have never been here before and EVERYONE was so nice and welcoming. I've never experienced this before. Their hospitality was unbelievable. After Church we chatted for a few more minutes with members. I think we met everyone at the Church! I love how it's a small intimate group. The band and singer was amazing!! The woman who sings has some pipes on her! She rocked it! I'm so glad we found this Church! The pastor preached an amazing message as well. If we find ourselves back in Detroit we will be back! As the Mother Church, it is one of the oldest in the area, and helped give birth to 132 other Lutheran parishes. Even now, it has a special place, and is still considered to be the most famous, and one of the most important. Most local Lutherans have heard of it, many have visited, and schoolchildren take field trips during Advent, Lent, and confirmation. Aside from its landmark status, it functions very well as a parish. It is traditional, but not ultra orthodox, so everyone feels comfortable. Its central location means that it has members from all over. And, there are always lots of different activities and events to keep people involved.

For a girl who grew up in traditional Catholic church, it took me a while to get used to the casual dress (even the pastor wears jeans), and contemporary praise band music, and relaxed feel of the services. But, I like it. It's welcoming, relatable, and authentic. Services meet in the auditorium of Detroit School of Arts - which may be my only gripe. While large and spacious, it just doesn't feel "churchy" to me (although this may be a pro to others, lol). Hopefully they will acquire a space of their own to meet in soon. Throughout the week there are small neighborhood groups that meet for further opportunity to socialize and discuss that week's message. There are various ministries you can join, that assure everyone has an outlet for their gifts and talents. I hope to see Woodside continue to grow and find new ways to serve the Detroit community!

Such was the situation. I felt completely unsafe. This church is 100% not following covid regulations. Great, there's a hand sanitizer machine in the lobby, but other than that, very little precaution was taken. I counted maybe three people wearing masks, and one lady, who I guessed to be in her eighties - I heard her almost apologizing to people that she was protecting herself. people were also seated just too close together. A few pews were roped off here and there, as a mere formality, as everyone else in the remaining pews was crammed together. As far as the church service, I felt it was a meeting of the mutual adoration society. Any Scripture reading was limited to the last 10 minutes, which was just a couple of lines taken from here and there in the pastor didn't seem to be able to connect them. Everyone seemed friendly, so I won't give them one star only, but if you really want to go somewhere to hear the word of God in a meaningful way, look elsewhere. If you just like to sing (um, I thought that was a covid no to sing as a group?) and say "Amen," well, maybe it's for you.

However, working with Gabriella was quite unpleasant. She seemed irritated from the beginning and we never felt like we were welcome with her. She seemed annoyed when she found out that someone in the wedding party was in a wheelchair. She didn't make an attempt to learn names. I understand there are a lot moving parts to coordinating the wedding, but she could at least try to be more pleasant. Overall, the wedding was beautiful, but her bad attitude could use improvement.
