When we showed up, there were no other visitors so we basically had a private tour. One guide gave us some information outside and handed off to another guide inside (because they both were available, I don't think this is typical) and we got so much information on the house, the Greene family, and Greene's family after the war. Greene was so important during the war but isn't as remembered because he died early. There is a claim Greene's wife was instrumental in the development of the cotton gin, but that might be more family lore. Still, it was fun. It's open seasonally, and the staff seem mostly like volunteers who are in it for the passion. The gift store is small but has some nice items. It's in a residential neighborhood as that developed later, so you really have to seek it out, but it's worth the visit.

Paine House Museum has seen a lot of history. The present group of volunteers has done much to…read morereorganize the displays and restore the property. First, the barn has been cleared out and lots of tools found within. A lathe found among the detritus has been restored and the original business sign hung-up on the building. You can also view two old fire-apparatus found in the barn that are now stored in the Mruk fire building next door. This building is on property gifted to the Town of Coventry by the last house owner and was recently sold back to the museum to create a Fire museum. Also found in the barn, and now in the house basement, is a huge, working loom! One of the volunteers, a member of the RI Spinners Guild, demonstrates on the loom and sells items produced in the museum gift shop. She has so much knowledge about spinning and weaving. Tours are offered Friday and Saturday, 10:00am - 2:00pm May through October. Public events are hosted through the year including free movies on the lawn in the summer and market days once a month featuring a variety of vendors. Old and unique…read more The Brayton Cemetery is also known as RI Historical Cemetery No. 34. It's a large graveyard with over 3,000 graves, some as early as the mid 1700s. Over a hundred Civil War veterans are buried here and most of their graves are marked. Several old family cemeteries from around the area have been moved here over the years and the cemetery is surrounded by a lovely stone wall. There are distant views of Apponaug Cove from the east side. The cemetery has lots of unique and very distinctive graves. Many have odd and interesting patterns and designs of stones placed around them. Not many very elaborate or huge memorials, most tend to be simple and some are just wooden crosses or plain stones. A historically important and fascinating old graveyard that contains a wonderful peek into the city of Warwick's past.

This is the second time I've visited the memorial: I stopped by here briefly in 2021 as well. I personally had no connections to the victims of the tragedy, as I was a high school senior in Pennsylvania in February 2003 - and I also didn't hear about the fire until after it occurred. Nonetheless, I've always been fascinated at the terrible event which took place on that fatal night in 2003, and wanted to visit the aftermath myself. The park is very simple in its appearance: upon entering the threshold, you're given multiple paths to walk upon, which have markers on the ground to commemorate the victims of the fire. In the center of each module of markers are circular concrete tables embossed with designs of 45 record spindle inserts. At the back of the memorial is a small pavilion with a full timeline of the tragedy, as well as key facts about similar nightclub tragedies such as Cocoanut Grove in Massachusetts. During my visit, I spoke with a man who informed me that he was an emergency room worker on the night of the disaster, and that his hospital was overwhelmed with injured patients to the surprise of the other hospital workers. Even if you have no immediate friends or family involved with the disaster, I recommend you stop by and pay respects. The park is usually quiet during the day, and is located off a main road which is relatively near Interstate 95.

This light is on a timer, so if it goes off, you will need to walk through the entrance again to turn it back on. People around the world know of the Station Night Club Fire. It's lessons are taught in fire districts throughout the U.S. For years family members have been working to create a memorial to those who lost their lives. Finally the park is completed and I believe it is a fitting tribute. There were many considerations that had to be taken into account when creating this park, not the least of which is the requirements by the state that the park be easily maintained. This park truly gives the aura of a holy place. A place of remembrance. It memorializes each person who lost their lives while out for an evening of enjoyment with friends. Every person has a head stone. Most with a photo, making the loss, of all their futures held, poignant. The pavilion at the back includes a time line. Reading top to bottom, left to right, it describes the history of the building - for example how originally the capacity of the building was about 50 people, and over time how that changed. The events of the fire are recounted starting before the band began to play. It recounts how some people made it out safely, couldn't find their friends, and returned to help them out, never to make it out again. So much heroism. Such sadness. I hope you will visit this memorial. Pay your respects to the departed. Appreciate how one moment can change your life and remember to be thankful for every small thing. No matter how small.

The first light on this site was built in 1827 and stands on Warwick Point at the southern tip of…read moreWarwick Neck. It is near the entrance of the port of Providence at the mouth of the Providence River. The original stone tower stood thirty feet tall with a small, 120-square-foot stone house attached and was described as an odd-looking structure, more like a windmill than a lighthouse. In 1833, a three-room wooden addition was added to the keeper's dwelling. Two years later, a lime and pebble covering was applied to the structure. The original beacon was a collection of eight lamps and nine-inch reflectors arranged around three-fourths of the circumference of a circular table. The cast iron structure was moved to its current location in 1939. It was placed on an eight-foot-tall concrete base so that ships could see its beacon over the top of the keeper's house. The tower is 51 feet tall and has a focal height of 66 feet. It is on Coast Guard property, behind a gate that was secured when I visited. I'm not sure if it is ever open for tours. There was a spot to stop my car and enjoy the view I posted. Three stars because it's pretty but secured from visitation. A whole lot of…read morewater Gainer Memorial Dam is a big dam. That's pretty obvious to even the most casual observer. It's 3,000 feet long, 110 feet high, and holds back almost 40 billion gallons of water. The reservoir behind the damn contains over 60% of the state's water supply. It the dam decided to break, the ground would be flooded for over twenty miles in all directions. Yep, it's a big dam that has impressive views of the reservoir and woods around it. There's some hiking trails around the reservoir but many are unmarked and go off into all directions. Still a fun place to get lost, although in the snowy weather finding a place to park is really hard because most of the parking areas aren't plowed. When the dam was completed in 1925 it was considered an engineering marvel. It has been inspected many times over the years and although modern construction methods weren't used when it was built, it is said to be able to withstand a direct hit by an earthquake up to magnitude 5.0. I guess the towns around the massive old dam just have to hope a magnitude 5.1 doesn't hit the area.

Wayne, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and he said that many times, people with specific interests come to the museum to learn more about certain pieces (people come to learn about clocks, rugs, paintings, wood furniture, Asian pieces, bathrooms, etc). The museum has been used in several TV shows like The Gilded Age and Treasures Inside The Museum. General entrance is $12 per adult and the best thing is to call them to schedule a tour. This is a cool old house build in 1786 and restored and repaired by the society over the years. It has a beehive oven, winding staircases and is filled with period artifacts. It also contains a room with old maps and genealogy records that can be used for personal and family research. The society has open houses at various times throughout the year and members in the society are available to answer any questions about the house or about the town of Warwick. Some of the people have been living here for decades and can trace their ancestors to some of the original settlers of the town. A fabulous wealth of information, they can answer or will find the answer to any possible questions about Warwick and the surrounding area. They have great books and brochures for sale that were written by some of the older members that contain great pictures and maps of the past history. A relatively small society but one with dedicated and knowledgeable individuals. If you have any questions or just an interest in Warwick or history in general, this is the place to visit.
