Seasoned Oak, a restaurant that is part of the Culinary Studies in Royal Oak. A very nice environment with tables, high tops and a bar. It's bright and airy with a view of Royal Oak. The menu changes weekly. We had the chili, tomato bisque soup with grilled cheese croutons. Our main entree was the salmon BTL sandwich and winter salad. Very good portion sizes and reasonable prices. Credit cards are accepted but only cash for tips. The service from Abigail was excellent. She was knowledgeable about the menu, friendly and efficient. The entire staff was wonderful filling our water and taking away our plates. Reservations are highly recommended if you want to be sure to get a table. Hours are limited. So, I'm in the process of completing my Bachelor's Degree through Eastern Michigan University. I decided it was time to finish, and after speaking with my adviser, I had a short list of classes to go through in order to obtain my degree. One of these classes was a basic level art class that I never took as a Freshman many years ago. My adviser said, to save time and money commuting to Eastern, it would be easier to take it through OCC at one of their campuses during the summer break. So, I started the process of enrolling back in March. It was relatively easy since I would be attending as a guest student from Eastern. I had to drop off paperwork at Eastern for them to deal with so my credits would transfer correctly. I also started by meeting with an OCC adviser at the Auburn hills campus, which is their main location. Once I had the appropriate paperwork complete, (which was easy) I was able to register for class. Fortunately, even if you aren't a guest student at OCC like I was, it seems like an easy process to do to get the ball rolling. I found that the only evening art class was located from 6 to 9:30 PM at the Royal Oak campus, which I wasn't familiar with. It filled up quickly since it's an entry level class and goes towards several different degrees. My tuition was about $400 total for a 3 credit hour class. Quite a bit less since I am used to paying $400 a credit hour at EMU. If I had taken the same class at EMU, it would have been at least $1600, and I would have had to commute to Ypsilanti. Paying one third of the price and driving 10 miles to and from Royal Oak is a lot easier for me! Class was 12 weeks long and started on May 6th, meeting every Monday though July 29th from 6PM until 9:30. The campus is super easy to navigate and they have a free parking garage right there near campus that makes going in and out of the school easy as pie. Police are around, and they patrol regularly. My teacher has a masters degree in fine art, and seems to know his stuff. But, he was kind of a dick the first 6 weeks of class. I loathed going, and bombed my first test. So did most of the class! Teacher was dam near unapproachable and there was literally a screaming match in class over this. One girl cried and left, the other got into it with the professor. It was awful. After this happened, half the class dropped. Eventually, the teacher offered extra credit and became less of a dickhead. Even though the class was way tougher then I had imagined for OCC, I was impressed and frustrated at the same time with the amount of information we covered. I would go here again as a student, but not for a while since I am starting to get burned out on school. I like OCC because it's really easy to register, they have multiple campuses, and are extremely affordable compared to 4 year schools. Parking is free and convenient, and they have a great variety of programs. But, the reason for 3 stars and not 5 was due to the crass nature of my professor, and I sense that different campuses offer different types of programs. Want to major in being an automotive mechanic? Go to Auburn Hills. Want to take an evening class for a requirement over the summer? You may be commuting to highland or the Farmington Hills campus. Oh and in case you are wondering, I survived all 12 weeks without missing a single class. Sat there until 9 PM every Monday. I got an A- in the class. I need several drinks of booze now. read more

I'm a returning student. An alumni took me to visit campus during evening hours (winter semester). The campus was quiet and clean. We checked out the photography and ceramics rooms. There are lockers near them to store your goods. The bookstore was clean and organized. I'm looking forward to attending class there next semester. read more

I dropped out of high school and was Candy (see Strangers with Candy). Got tired of being a "loser user and a boozer" lol.... so I went back to school to get my high school diploma. Continued on at OCC where I received a Surgical Technology degree (only took me a few decades, oh well). I have great memories from ALL the campuses. But Auburn Hills is where I took math requirements. Dr. Gladys Rockind (who is the head of the math department) brings tears to my eyes. I was dumb as a box of rocks in her class but she got me up to trigonometry. She will absolutely not let you fail. If you struggle you meet with her privately, how many times I saw her checking in on her (slower) students in the math lab. You don't get that attention at the big U. I then transferred to the University where I obtained a soc/criminology undergrad degree. At the big U,,,,,,,,, I looked back at OCC and boy was it easier not to mention way way cheaper. So, transferring from a 4 year university to a small community college to take Chemistry and other "right brained" classes I was a bit skeptical at first. But within my first weeks as a student at Oakland Community College in Royal Oak I was hooked .I actually ended up completing enough credits to get an Associates and continually have gone back since receiving my B.A. in English from Wayne State University. With the cost of college rising, community colleges are becoming a more feasible option for those wanting to continue their education and Michigan's Oakland Community College is a fantastic avenue to higher learning in the Metro Detroit area. It was a treat to be more than a number or a face in an enormous lecture hall. The professor's not only knew my name, but knew a good chunk of personal information about me. Oakland Community College has phenomenal art classes, especially their photography department headed by Professor Kangas. The student services like registration, counseling and what not are phenomenal and quite a relief having to deal with that headache at a much larger university. Oakland Community College has convinced me that good things come in smaller packages. read more

You need to pick up a new skill, or a transition from High School to University? Then OCC is your place. I have taken academics, technical, arts, and science classes here and the other campuses and have always been happy with the result. On a personal note, the ceramics lab at Royal Oak is OUTSTANDING. Simply the best photography program in the Detroit area. Rob Kangas runs the Photo lab--black and white and color-- he is a teacher in the true sense of the word--knowledgeable, informative, available, never too busy to help. Kangas encourages creativity and his photo lab is a true microcosm of society. People of all ages, races, cultures, religions, ethnicities are to be found here sharing ideas and learning from each other. The lab is well equipped and well run. Open M-F 9:00-9:00. You will need your own camera. The digital program is also excellent. Great lab and many good instructors. read more

Attending as a transfer while I take some family time in MI. I think the teachers are great and many of the students are friendly however the administrative staff is beyond horrible. I sincerely hope they didn't get their education from OCC. A woman in the evaluations office told me credits from my previous school (3 years worth) would not transfer over and I would have to restart my higher education program (from scratch!). I than registered for foundation classes I had already taken. In the mean time I spoke to a couple accreditation associations who said there shouldn't be an issue. I then tried calling said evaluator to have her recheck. She admitted to being wrong and knowing for sometime before I was able to connect with her. Because she failed to get in touch with me, I could not withdraw from classes at OCC I previously had taken at my other university. Skip forward to present day and a new registration looming. My transcripts which have been awaiting proper evaluation since the beginning of september remain unchecked. After speaking with the same woman at the Evaluations Office about my inability to register properly for a SECONG TIME without my previous credits, she made no apologizes nor offered any amends. She instead told me to "accept human error." Why do I have to pay for someone else's ineptness and incompetence? One if not two semesters in time, effort, and a couple thousand dollars worth wasted because of this employee. MOST INFURIATING OF ALL IS THAT THERE ISN'T ANY EFFICIENT WAY TO MAKE A COMPLAINT AT OCC, WHETHER IT BE FOR AN ISSUE LIKE MINE OR SOMETHING INFINITELY MORE GRAVE LIKE HARASSMENT. UPDATE: after multiple calls to the various campuses I was able to get ahold of someone who resolved my issue (for the most part). It shouldn't have to take so much effort and time to get administration to do what there job required of them. read more

The only good thing about this college is the price. Everything else is a joke! No one helps you or gets back to you..... no one cares. They just send you to some one else who doesn't care either. They treat you like scum and constantly roll their eyes at you. No one is helpful. Its the biggest joke ever. read more

I went into OCC on Washington Street to inquire as to someone I could talk to, to sign up for writing courses. When I got to the window and inquired I was told to come back at 11:30. It was my only day off for the week and I had numerous errands to try and get done in one day. I said I couldn't make it and asked if there was any one person that I could speak to. I know the deadline for fall classes is coming to a close and wanted to get in beofre the deadline. I was told there was no one to speak to. I couldn't believe that as big a school as OCC and they have no one that walks in from off the street can talk to. I find OCC to be not accomodating to potential students. I will never look into attending school there and will recommend friends to do likewise. If I could do negative stars OCC in Royal Oak would get -5 stars! read more

Very unprofessional school. I made the Dean's List 4 times in a row after averaging a 1.8gpa. I graduated with honors. They left my name out of the graduation book and all they had to say was "sorry" and "there is nothing we can do about it". Faculty/Administration are very ghetto at specefic campuses. Do not attend to those campuses. read more

I will start by saying this college have some very good teachers. I actually learn just not a face in the crowd. The students are nice. Now let's get to the ISSUE when I first register for this school I didn't know I was getting charged Out of District rates because of what my ID address had. NO ONE mention it to me. This was my first year in college right out of high school. I had a grant that covered my tuition. So I'm guessing they were thinking well it's not coming out of her pocket! Wrong my grant scholarship only pay "in district" rates I got charged 1,119 dollars extra. I had to pay out of pocket for all my books because I was told 4-6 weeks for my financial aid to kick in! I called about a week later to check the status someone told me 6-8 weeks now! They both was wrong came in 3 weeks! Also from my pervious school I had a 500 dollar check it was said when I apply it to my account I would get the money back for my Books they took me threw a long process. The Check was apply to my Out of district balance. No one told me I was broke and hurt. Plus the lady at the Financial office was RUDE and stuck up, she acted like the questions I was asking where stupid. Then she said she was looking up my account I said you don't even have my ID number she said oh yeah and laughed. The people that Work in the Office are unprofessional and need to be replaced! read more
