One instructor consistently created an environment where white students were treated more harshly than others. Several white students, including myself, experienced condescending remarks, biased assumptions, and grading patterns that felt punitive rather than educational. I personally witnessed multiple white students being failed or pushed out of the program under this instructor, while students of other backgrounds were not held to the same standard. This pattern raised serious concerns about fairness, professionalism, and the school's commitment to equal treatment. Many of the students behaved more like freshmen than graduate students, and at times the atmosphere felt like being back in high school. As a white woman, I often felt dismissed or talked down to, which affected how I was treated in group settings. One instructor also delivered strong messages about oppression while living a very comfortable lifestyle, which made the content feel more performative than genuine. This kind of contradiction contributes to why the program feels like a revolving door in 2026 with open conversation to be discouraged unless you repeat the approved narrative. I do want to acknowledge that one older Black male instructor was excellent. He was fair, respectful, and created a space where everyone could participate without judgment. He was a true bright spot in the program. Political comments targeting conservatives, Republicans, MAGA supporters, ICE, and law‑and‑order viewpoints were common, and students with different perspectives didn't feel safe speaking up. A psychology program should promote neutrality and psychological safety, but that was not my experience here. My recommendation from one vet to another do not go here if you are a veteran.

Opened over a decade ago by Denise Darcel Davis, this premiere public school offers students studies in dance, television communications, theater, visual arts and more on top of math, science, English, etc. Students are accepted only on an audition/portfolio basis, so the stakes are high, but definitely worth it. The school moved in early 2000 to its multi-million dollar facility off of Cass Ave in Midtown. For those seeking a one up in the field of art this is the Detroit school to do it in. As an alumni myself I would first recommend attending for the brilliant art teachers and the advantage students receive in their field of study. The school days are a bit longer, but students of DSA receive the advantage, DSA students consistently score higher on Michigan standardized test than any local public school.

Some of the pluses: 1) It's a beautiful campus. The building is new. It's bright and airy. It's very clean. There's a huge stage for preformances. 2) The counseling staff really seem to care about the students. Our student made a lot of adjustments on her class schedule and they were always willing to work with her. 3) The art-related classes are very good and they have a wide variety of options. On the downside: 1) Despite being given such a good opportunity, some of the students just aren't that serious about their art or their academic classes. There was a lot of skipping school to hang out at Wayne State or Starbucks. 2) The building itself is very tall with lots of stairs. If I was a student there I would not be happy about going up and down five or six flights 8-10 times a day. The elevator is only for students with medical disabilities that prevent them from taking the stairs. 3) I got a real shock when the first report card arrived and I saw that our student had a number of skipped classes and more than a dozen tardies. Frankly, I think the school should call you the first time your student misses class or is unually late with no reasonable excuse. I would have liked significantly more communication rather than having to hear about things way after the fact.

And while it's not quite the same as the bar hopping, house partying, beer bonging, roomate arguing, cold pizza for breakfast days as my undergrad - I really have no complaints about the Troy center! Located on Maple between John R & Stephenson Highway, it's pretty easy to get to - just a couple miles off of I-75. Clear sign from the road, and one main entrance to get inside. It houses only a small collection of classrooms, but even if you ignored your professor emails before the first day of class, there is an electronic screen scrolling the various courses and which room they are located in. There is a large kitchen with a number of tables and chairs, a few vending machines that are always well stocked, and a refrigerator and microwave for community use. In the lobby of the building is also the "Maple Street Deli", which is a small store run by the tiniest, most delightful Asian woman. She will make a small selection of sandwiches and salads fresh for you, and also sell you any number of chips, candy, beverages, and granola bars. She'll always greet you with a smile and remind you to wash that apple you just bought before you eat it. She keeps the Maple Street Deli open even on weekends, so us folks in a Saturday class aer still able to get a quick lunch without leaving the premesis. The bathrooms are large and impeccably clean at all times. I don't know how often the cleaning staff is in there (or maybe we are just a neat and tidy group that doesn't dirty it?) but there is never so much as a paper towel on the floor or splash of water on the sink. Classrooms are set up with large tables and plush rolling desk chairs. They're not stingy with the AC, to the point that I usually make sure to bring an extra hoody or sweater to keep from being chilled. Another great asset to this center is the student work room, stocked with a handful of computers and the crown jewel - a beautiful, new copier/printer that is always fully stacked with paper, can collate AND staple as it copies...never jams or runs out of toner it seems. You may be thinking, "so? big deal - seems like something that would be standard." But ooooh no. I have spent much time in educational facilities and this is not always the case. Facilities aside, any emails I send to the folks in the student services offices here are responded to promptly - like, within the half hour. So thanks CMU Troy for making graduate degrees as convienent and pleasant as possible. (Until I think about the thousands of dollars in tuition floating out of my pocket each semester.)

The others had been cleaned and locked since the venue was being prepped for the next day. The lines grew long, and with kids needing to go urgently, I approached one of the custodial staff to ask if any other restrooms were available. That's when I met Ana. She gently explained that everything else was closed but then took it upon herself to help. She contacted someone with the keys, walked all the way to another restroom, opened it up for us, and let in a few others as well. I knew it meant extra work and more cleaning, but she didn't hesitate. When I thanked her, she was so humble and simply said she was glad to help. These 5 stars are for you, Ana! You didn't expect anything in return, and you had no idea I'd write this review. If you want to get a certificate and don't know what your doing this is the school for you. If you want to get a job & mess up someone's health because you were trained improperly this is the school for you. There are no internships, tours nor speakers. No machines, no learning of instruments, or set ups.. just a bunch of no nothing! This place is very hard on attendance they want you to come every day to be taught nothing. If you're late they want to write you up. ( like they paying you to be there.) If you miss three days you're out. We had three people to drop from the class because they couldn't handle the way we were being taught. At the end of this five week alleged advance SPT course (which by the means you have to be a advance reader but this is the kicker.. how can it be advanced when the instructor is not advanced in reading & will not try to pronounce any medical terminology). This course is not worth the money especially if you're paying for it out of your pocket. You will be better off by your self learning on your own at your pace. Take the course on line if you just have too, or find a better school than Michigan Healthcare Academy. You really can use youtube & quizlet, order your HSPA books from amazon and you will do just fine. All ways be Great on Purpose.

The school was consistently disorganized. The principal seemed disengaged and unhappy in his role, while the assistant principal was unapproachable. Even their newsletters were full of grammatical errors--alarming for an academic institution. Most concerning was the school's push to hold back pre-K students. Even when classroom teachers said children were ready for kindergarten, administration insisted otherwise (this is the case for 3 different families we have spoken to). In our case, they repeatedly claimed our 4 y/o May-born daughter was "too young for Kindergarten," which is simply not true. We later learned this was likely due to a lack of kindergarten space, making the decision feel misleading and financially motivated. The one bright spot was our daughter's teacher, who was kind and capable, but strong classroom teaching cannot make up for weak leadership. Now that our daughter is at a new school, the difference in organization, communication, and overall educational environment is striking. I fear for Shrine's future if leadership and priorities do not change.
