Have been going here for a month for Chiropractic care and I feel 100x better than before! It all started at the Women's Show - Oaktree had a booth and offered free assessments with a discounted rate for your first two visits. I got my assessment and decided to visit the clinic (for lack of a better word - its not very clinic feeling) on Lisgar Ave. near Metcalfe. Let me start out by saying that Dr Emilie and her husband Martin are the sweetest people and run the clinic themselves with the help of a few other specialists. Dr Emilie is the Chiropractor and Martin is the Acupuncturist - they live in the house where the clinic is with their three kids which makes the clinic a very comfortable place to be (although they live upstairs and I've never seen their kids, haha) My first visit was for Xrays and a medical questionnaire to ensure that my treatment would be created and tailored to my specific needs. The second visit was a group setting to get an idea of what chiropractic care does for your body. I'm obvs not a specialist, but the premise is that your spine controls everything about you because it houses all of your nerves and such in your spinal cord. She then takes you individually to give you the results of your xrays and then presents you with the course of action she wants to take for your care. Usually 3x/week for the first few months, then 2x/week a month or two, then down to 1x/week for the next few months. You are able to get an assessment right away after she gives you your results during your second visit to kick off the treatment. (definitely do this!) After my assessment, xrays and the results of my xray, and my first alignment, I started my course of treatment given the freaky posture I had (that I really didn't think was so bad, but the back pain I had for the last year prompted me to get xrayed and holy guacamole does the xray ever speak for itself). EXCITING THING HAPPENED TO ME: After my FIRST treatment the back pain that I have been dealing with for the last year and a half was GONE! I obvs didn't think it would last, yes, I've gone to massage therapists and physiotherapists MANY times for the EXACT same issue, and it helped, but was never fixed. But it's been a month, I have been going regularly, I have yet to be in any kind of pain. I am so thrilled with the treatment I've gotten. I am still on my course of treatment and am loving it. The alignment room is right off of the reception and there are two waiting areas; one in the reception room for everyone (chiro and acupuncture clients (and whoever else is in the house)) and one just behind a frosted window from the chiro tables (2). She is licensed to treat everyone; men, women and children, from small babies to the elderly, pregnant and otherwise. She is not the only chiropractor in the office though - on Monday's and some sporadic days when Dr Emilie has training or seminars - Dr Vanessa takes care of the adjustments in the clinic. Dr Vanessa is just as wonderful as Dr Emilie and they really try to connect with their clients in the short time you're together. Chiropractic care has specific hours given all of the patients they sees, and the fact that Dr Emilie is inviting her clients into her home, so they will treat people for a few hours mid-late morning (I think 11-:12:30)and mid to late afternoon (3:30-5:30 ish) I'm assuming because most of their clients come from downtown - this lets them come in on their lunch hours and on their way home from work. You clearly have the sense that everyone enjoys their work there. You start with an assessment, which includes x-rays, and will get many more afterwards to follow your progress. It's great to have a way to follow your progress that includes x-rays and pictures that allows you to actually see the changes in your body. People that know me well have also noticed the results and I personally feel so much better. They also have group presentations which are great to remind you what are the benefits from the chiropractic care that you receive and why it's important to keep doing the home exercices and to keep getting adjusted. The living social deal is 29 for three Acupuncture or Chiropractic Sessions with Initial Consultation. Turns out you would have to make FOUR appts : 1 for the consultation which is a HOUR and you CAN NOT get treatment the same time, you would have to reschedule an appt for the actual session (acupuncture is 30 min each session) if you are busy like me, have limited access for transportation, and is currently in pain there is no way I want to spend a hour talking to a dr and NOT get treatment the same day and have to be sent home in pain and then wait to book another appt to actually get treatment. I have to agree with Vera D. on the business side of things, she is right on. I also have to say that after consulting with many other acupunturists, the yearly plan is NOT the way to go (3x/week for X weeks, 2X/week for X weeks, then 1X/week for the rest of the year). Going once a week for acute problems is enough. The rest is useless overpricing and overkill. (talking roughly 3500$ for the year, or 50$/treatment) Another thing I do not agree with: you do not get a private room in which you get your treatment ie you are in a room with 3 chairs and chances are you are getting your treatment at the same time as others. No privacy. The treatments are solely done in chairs, which means no needles in the back or the middle section. Only arms, lower legs and head. I've had needles in the lower abdomen and back and those helped me a great deal on my FIRST treatment in another clinic, whereas it doesn't seem like I am going to get at this place. Not only that... I was going there for a specific issue. The lady sitting beside me was coming in for a completely different issue and and checked where she got her needles. It was very similar to where I got mine. ... Acupuncture treatment shouldn't be a one treatment treats all type of thing. I really didn't understand why our treatments looked so alike, so... generic. Many of my punctures ended up bleeding a bit, that was a first. And as I said, I've had acupuncture before. I don't think that is supposed to happen. 1 needle in the lady beside me bleed even more than mine and I was a bit shocked. They also talked about a double treatment. 1 treatment is usually about 20 minutes. A double is 40, but after 20 minutes, they would take out the needles and use the same one in different locations. It as been proven that needles should be used only once, as the tip is slightly blunt after the first insertion, which could cause more pain on the second insertion. I personnaly think that this practice is unaceptable, but that is me. Staff is nice, warm and very welcoming, but I will not be going back, as I do not agree with many of their practices. read more

New clients are refused treatment if they do not agree to bring their spouses to a "education session" that presents their methods and promotes their business, at 7:00 p.m. The chiropractic sessions are done in a room with two beds and a bench where other people are waiting while looking at the doctor and the patients she treats. The acupuncture sessions are done only on arms, lower part of legs, and face, in a room with many other clients. My understanding is that acupuncture is done on the whole body and in an environment that is more private. The screens in the waiting room mention "God's power of healing" and prayers for clients. From a business point of view, this clinic is not keeping in mind their clients, as they do not care to provide services to clients who do not want to listen to their pitch. I have nothing but great things to say about this clinic. The staff are extremely friendly, professional, and informative. I've been going here on several occasions, specifically for acupuncture. First time I came was 5 years ago, and to be honest, I was skeptical since I had no experience with acupuncture, but I had heard good things. After having suffered a traumatic brain injury, I was going through some neurological and physical issues that needed to be addressed, and was running out of solutions and resources, so I decided to give it a shot. I chose this clinic because it was recommended to me by a friend, who is also a patient. I could not be more pleased with the outcome. Almost magical, and I'm not even exaggerating. With the help of acupuncture, and Chinese herbs, and Martin's knowledge, I was able to quickly overcome what I had been trying to overcome for years. I have since lately gone again, but this time for anxiety and depression, and it has also helped me tremendously with this as well. So much that I've stopped taking medication that I've been taking for years. I don't know if it's this efficient for everyone, but it certainly was for me, and it is absolutely worth a try. I've been hard on my body all my adult life and have had many injuries, seen many physiotherapists, chiropractors, and even a couple of other acupuncturists. The staff at Oaktree are at the top of my list now. I started getting acupuncture to help with what I was told was tendonitis in my left arm and my right hamstring. Both from old repeated injuries and both getting worse over the years. Both unsuccessfully treated elsewhere. My arm was at the point where picking up a cup of coffee hurt. My leg would complain from just walking to the end of my drive way to get the mail. After a few weeks of twice a week acupuncture treatments my arm is completely back to normal again. Zero pain and as a side bonus my left wrist has got full mobility back too. (Something I had lost after the second time I broke that wrist.) Recently I helped move a full size fridge down three flights of stairs, and then up two, without a dolly and without pain. The arm is 100%. As for my leg, I ran 9.5km today. No pain at all while running. The leg is just a little stiff now. I'd say about 90% healed now. I'm sure within a few more treatments it'll be good as new too. I started seeing Dr Emilie after I was suffering with many sports injuries. I had chronic migraines that I would have to take about 2-4 painkillers each day to get through the day. I had major lower back problems and I was just 25 years old. These problems had been persisting from sports injuries for over 5 years. I had been to physio and massage therapy which helped some but was not targeting the real issue. I stumbled upon Oaktree and decided to give chiro a try as I was really at my wit's end. Thank God as it was exactly what my body needed. After my x rays, Dr Emilie showed me where my spine was and where it should be. No other sports doctor or any other doctor I had been to over the years had ever made it so simple nor had gone over x rays with me. It was a little scary seeing how poorly misaligned I was. We went through the treatment and payment plan in addition to the little group meeting where I had to bring my spouse. I am seeing some negative reviews where people think this was a scam or thought it was a 'scare tactic'. I just want to point out that though I was a little confused at the non-traditional business model, I decided to give it a chance to see why this was the case. Though the payment plan for the year seemed steep, when it was broken down for me, it made complete sense. They allowed me to pay monthly and they were open to customized payment plans based on what I was able to pay. The reason they do the 'group' session at the beginning makes complete sense in a business way. Dr Emilie explains the importance of keeping your spine aligned as it protects your nervous system, which in turn, controls your body (ie organ function etc). It makes more sense for her to do a group session than to have to repeat this to each person individually. What I like about her practice is that she specializes in reconstructive chiropractic. This means that the treatment actually fixes the problems rather than just pain relief which is temporary. As this is a longer-term plan (depending on your issues), it is important for your spouse to understand what treatment you need and the importance of it. It made a huge difference with Dr Emilie explained it to my husband than when I did, and he could then ask her questions about it too. Though it is more unconventional than other practices I had been to, it actually works, plain and simple. I am in and out pretty quickly which makes it really easy to fit in my schedule. If privacy is needed, they will keep the room vacant. There is also now a wall between the waiting room and the 2 chiro tables for extra privacy. And we also do progress reports/x rays (which are done privately) to go over your progress and next steps. As weird as this sounds, chiropractic literally saved my life...the quality of my life. I was in such pain and discomfort, I couldn't do normal things, like hike, or sleep comfortably, or play sports anymore or barely workout. I was even worried if I ever had kids, how I would manage to handle pregnancy or motherhood if I was in such chronic pain. From the first few sessions, my migraines went away. Turns out my neck was so misaligned, that was the source of my migraines. Dr Emilie worked on my neck first and as i started getting treated, she continued down my back and treated my lower back. I cannot believe what wonders it has done. My husband was also suffering from other issues such as indigestion etc. Turns out it was an area in his spine that was misaligned. The nerves could not properly signal to his organs to properly break down food etc, so he was constantly sick or with stomach pain. He too fought me on getting treated but finally, he decided to give it a try and he is since pain free and realizes the importance of getting treated. Dr Emilie is incredibly understanding, friendly and knowledgeable. She has fixed all of my issues and pain, I didn't think I would ever get better. I am literally in shock and am so thankful that I found this place as chiropractic was never something I though about or intended on trying. I have been going to Oaktree for several months now. At first I was going for acupuncture, and recently I just started chiropractic as well. I first started going to Oaktree because I suffer from chronic pain in my neck, shoulders and, more recently, my hip. Martin (acupuncturist), Emilie (chiropractor) and the Oaktree staff are fantastic. They start off your treatment with a simple explanation of what they do and how their treatments work, they conduct a thorough assessment of you and your issue, and they make sure to follow your progress. Since I have started going to Oaktree, I have improved quite a bit. Although I am still a "work-in-progress", my pain has reduced a lot, I sleep better, my digestion is better and I am also doing better emotionally. My progress has been slow, but steady. I now look forward to seeing how chiropractic care will assist me. I have tried 2 other chiropractors in the past, to no avail. I had lost confidence in chiropractic care, partly because I felt that my progress wasn't being followed, partly because I was just a dollar sign on a table for a "cookie-cutter" treatment that lasted a few seconds, but most of all because I wasn't getting better at all. And, when you have to attend so many sessions in order to make progress, it's easy to feel that your money is going nowhere fast. However, so far, I can tell that Emilie is much different than your usual chiropractor. Emilie always spends the time required to answer your questions and address your pain/problem. Her adjustments are not "cookie-cutter" adjustments: everyone gets something different depending on what their issues are. She appears to know her clients very well and conducts a quick assessment before each adjustment. Your adjustment is not necessarily the same each time you go. She takes the time to respond to your body's needs on that particular day. Martin's approach to acupuncture treatments is quite similar: he can respond to how you're feeling that day (e.g. where your pain is), and his treatments are not always the same. When I first started going to him, I was so amazed at how acupuncture can quickly eliminate or decrease your pain. In my first treatment, I felt no pain at all in my neck and shoulders, and that was amazing. It was the first time that I had felt pain-free since early 2008. Furthermore, if you find that you are not quite ready financially to commit to a treatment program, you can find several ways to deal with those financial hurdles with Oaktree. In my case, doing both acupuncture and chiropractic care was a big financial investment, but Oaktree has several payment plan options available to their clients in order to make things work. I feel very confident that my progress with continue and that I will be pain-free in the near future. My only reservation is that it would be great if they were open on Fridays and the weekends in order to allow a more flexible schedule. Otherwise, the location itself is very convenient, particularly if you are a public servant working in centretown/downtown. You can get there in the early morning, at lunch or after work. The clinic staff keep the place moving and working efficiently and effectively. You can tell that the staff enjoy what they do and are pleased working there. When I bought my Oaktree Health Acupuncture Groupon, I didn't have much expectations that my problem could be solved. Having been on several antibiotics and having seen numerous specialists, nobody could fix my body spread eczema. Within two weeks I noticed a HUGE DIFFERENCE. I have been a patient with Oaktree for over 2 years now. I have also been MIGRAINE FREE for 2 years now! Before I came to Oaktree, I was suffering with migraines regularly (1-2 times a month) for a couple of years, which could not be solved by just taking medication (ie. Advil), limiting my caffeine intake (I do not drink coffee or pop), or increasing my water intake; some of the solutions I was suggested. It took about a month of treatment at Oaktree to eliminate the regular occurrence of my migraines. On top of that, I have had other issues, including a lower back injury where the healing process was sped up and long term damage decreased by regular visits to Oaktree. Plus, not only did Oaktree make me feel much better, but my experience there has always been welcoming and accommodating.
