We had a really nice stay four times at what we think is a very nice campground (Oakwood Campground, Clear Lake, Iowa) with great pull through sites with full hookup. We thought we were getting along fine with the management and they had not informed us of any issues. Mind you this was the first that we knew of any problem after staying 4 times in one summer. We are, basicly, rule followers and have never had a problem over many decades of camping. We respect that it entails a lot of hard work to run a campground well. We acknowledge that we were wrong and made a mistake. We overstayed past noon without asking for an extension. Management approached us very agitated, accused us of overstaying and planning to winterize. She did not accept our apology, our explanation that we were not winterizing on the campground property or our offer to pay. The other half of the management then stopped in his pickup truck and yelled. "This better not ever happen again." I went to visit with him to tell him we were sorry and did not mean to intentionally frustrate or anger them. I apologized again as my husband and daughter had. I shared that we really enjoyed the campground. He did not want to visit with me and kept saying, "We are not going to talk about this."He blamed us for coming in too close to closing time twice. Apparently, 15 minutes prior to closing is too late. Blamed us for not reading the rules (we had). Blamed us for planning to winterize (he would not listen to find out we were not planning to winterize). We have never winterized in a campground. We sent a check for more than our over stay and they sent it back voided. Mind you we had had no unkind words with this couple previous to this situation. We were the ones being yelled at and unable to visit civilly with them. We tried. We did not yell or act belligerently towards either of them. I expect management to be able to inform us of a mistake we made in a civil manner not in a belligerent or threatening manner. I also expect to be able to do the right thing to make amends if we are wrong and have made a mistake. read more

I love this campground! It's our 3rd time staying here. The sights are very spacious. Last time staying the weather turned scary and the campground host knocked on every door to tell each guest about the weather warning and told us where to go in the campground for safety. read more

Note that if you have a big rig, this may be a better place for you than it was for us. We have a tent camper and prefer a more wilderness setting. We stayed here with family who lived in the area to celebrate the 4th of July. The weekend was busy. (July 2-5) There are LOTS of rules at this campground and if you don't follow them, they will let you know. Some workers in a nice way, other workers weren't so nice. Upon check-in, the woman was very condescending to me as we pulled in to check in. I guess we pulled ahead too far past the check in stop, and she thought we should have known that. She made me feel like I was an idiot for something I did not know about. Our two families had sites #2 and #3 (I think). We were RIGHT at the entrance of the campground. I would not recommend this location for a tent camper especially as there is a bright light that is on all night to light the road and it shined right into our trailer. Also, the road is gravel so every time someone drove in it woke me up. There was no grass between our two campers. just a nice concrete "porch" and lots of class 5 gravel. The campers are PACKED IN. My husband joked that our daughter on her end of the camper was sleeping closer to strangers than us. Fire rings are tiny and they bring them to you if you want a fire. We set up our fire area nestled between 3 big rigs and our campers. Wood was $10 for two wheel barrel loads which I thought was kind of expensive; and you couldn't just get one. The pleasant surprises were swings for the kids, and chickens roaming around which the kids found amusing until they were told to not go by them any more; The chickens are not officially part of the campground. The bathrooms nothing fancy but were cleaned a few times a day which was really nice. The laundry/game room building looked scary on the outside, but the laundry had lots of new looking machines and was very clean on the inside. The "Game Room" was where old card table and chairs go to die, and people leave their old musty faded games to feel better about getting rid of them. For being the 4th of July weekend we thought it was incredibly quiet for being packed. The wifi was spotty. read more

We checked in to this place at the end of May (or around there). At first, things were great. The owners left us to ourselves. My husband is a travel nurse so we are in a different RV park every 3 months or so. We picked (what we thought) a perfect spot. It was located right in front of the bathrooms & across from the laundry and swing set. Toward the end of our stay (August), My two boys (8&3) had an incident in the boys bathroom with two older gentlemen being naked & asking them if they wanted to go in the shower and take a look at them. My husband works nights. He had just left for work and I thought the boys could just run in and take a shower really quick. That was MY MISTAKE & NEVER AGAIN will I make that mistake again...I do the best I can with small children on the road when my husband works a ton of hours. My issue is that after this incident happened, my 8 year old was mortified. He was scared. I immediately went to the owners but couldn't tell them the older mens campsite, only the direction they had gone. Mike didn't seem too concerned (the owner). After I reported it to the owner, I called the police to report it. The police officer went ABOVE & BEYOND to try to help us. He was so friendly and tried to help us find the guys. Mike walked over in the middle of me talking to the police & told us not to turn this into a "witch hunt". The officer then explained that this wasn't a matter they take lightly & neither should he. Mike didn't care. He was more worried about how other people in the community would feel about a police officer being there than trying to find a pedophile staying on his property. The officer then explained after he walked away that Mike is always like that when they have to come out and he "never cooperates". I no longer felt safe, so me and my children packed up and left that same night. My husband went to get our camper at 7 am the next morning. When he did Mike came over to talk to him and he asked if we found another place to go to (which we did) & his response to where he thought we were going was that stuff like that happens all the time at the other place. No apology for how he handled the situation. I 100% DO NOT recommend this place to ANYBODY. I understand that they sometimes are unsure of who they are letting in their RV parks...i truly do get that, but I don't and will never understand why they didn't help me handle the situation when it happened. We were loyal customers. We tried to support them and only them. (we are all about supporting local when we can, especially during these times) My children were RIGHT THERE. If they screamed, I would have heard them. Those men were pointing at my camper when they walked out of the bathroom...which means they knew exactly where my kids came from & were staying. How long had they been watching us? While the police were at my campsite another guest came over and said that one of the residents made them uncomfortable (they had a young boy with them also) & that they weren't sure if it was the same person but they at least tried to help. (Keep in mind, they had no idea why the police were visiting my site). Lesson learned for us. & thankfully the next RV owners at our new place were completely shocked by the previous places response and reassured us that if anything like that ever happened they would not ever allow it and they would make sure the people left immediately. Never again will we stay next to a common area. (The bathrooms, playground, laundry) & my children will only be using our bathroom in our camper. read more

This is a very quiet, peaceful campground, close enough to town for shopping and dining, but far enough away to give a country feel. The pull-through sites are long and level. The only negative is the television reception. Very limited channels. read more

Excellent park! Very large pull through sites, level, and shady. We had no trouble with our satellite reception. The owners are what really puts this park over the top. We were broke down here, and our tow vehicle was as well. We were also sick with major head colds. Rough week to say the least. They checked on us everyday, gave us their car to use to grocery shop, and refused payment for the last 5 days we were here. We travel 6 months out of each year and have never been treated this well. Clear Lake is a beautiful little town with a gorgeous lake. Well worth the short trip off I-35. Also, we had our big rig and tow fixed here, on site, by Graham Tire. read more
