But Oberlin really does it hella-cheap-style by combining the two and turning Oberlin (the town) instantaneously into the craziest, most overstuffed sausage of a quiet Ohio town. That said, I enjoyed Commencement/Alumni Weekend FAR more as a student rather than a graduating student, when you can enjoy Illumination, BBQs, and other beginning-of-summer-but-still-at-school activities without the mental weight of knowing your parents (and step-parents and grandparents ad nauseum) are either in tow or desperately seeking you out. I realized this when I found Illumination to be positively breathtaking when I first saw it (see Kevin S.'s description) and just sort of a blur the next. Side note: Nothing like watching Obies age. The ten-year-reunion dance at the 'Sco, with its herd of 42-year-old aging hippies and nerds (at one point I had written "38-year-old"-- bad math!) dancing spasmodically to the tunes of the early nineties both warmed my heart and put me on notice.

If you're an underclassperson staying behind, it's a chance to pre-savor the bittersweet. If you're an alum, it's an awkward dance of avoidance and quest, finding the ones you miss and love, or missed loving, while avoiding the pretentious, the too painful to talk to, or the insufferable. If you're on staff or a townie it's an extra ritual to kick off your summer, a vivid resetting of the clock and a harbinger of quiet warm weeks without all those damn students. Winding the night on the steps of Finney to the tentative funkiness of the steel drum band will always be there in the back of your mind when you hear or say that word, Oberlin.

He has already taken 3 courses remotely and has had…read morean awesome experience and made some really wonderful connections with students, faculty, and the very helpful admissions and financial aid teams. Oberlin College has a proud history of being the first college in America to enroll Black students. It is socially progressive and rigorously academic! The perfect fit for my kid who is pursuing international politics, sociology, and languages. Due to COVID, all students are upgraded to single rooms made out of doubles, so there is a lot of space to live and study. We feel confident with the COVID precautions that Oberlin College is taking this fall. My kid will have 2 in-person classes and 2 remote classes this semester, and we are just hoping for a safe experience. If he has to come home and participate fully remotely, that's fine too. But he is staring this semester on campus and is loving it already! The town of Oberlin is small, tidy, and friendly. There are some shops and restaurants in Oberlin, and many more within an 8-10 mile drive. There is a hospital very near campus, which is vital for us as my kid has a medical condition that occasionally necessitates an ER visit. Greyhound bus goes through a nearby town, making trips home cheap and convenient. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. My kid is looking forward to a great year ahead.

I have attended several workshops and also completed the Coach Certification and Gestalt Training programs. I have been blown away by the ethics, commitment, and quality of the GIC staff and faculty. The GIC I know is one of the most open and supportive learning environments I have encountered. Actually, I value what I've learned there more than what I learned in my MBA program. The dozens of fellow students I have connected with at GIC have expressed the same sentiment. We all have been amazed at the personal growth and professional development that have been transformative for us. My only regret about the GIC is that I did not discover it earlier in my career (and life). If you are thinking about studying at GIC try an introductory workshop and/or talk to former students to decide for yourself.

I have been to two…read moreworkshops at the Gestalt Institute and I am about to graduate from the 20 month Gestalt training program. My experiences at Gestalt have been very powerful catalysts of positive change for me, in an extraordinary variety of ways - my coaching, my teaching, my writing and my personal life. I see there is a very negative review here. It appears the individual concerned had an unsually painful experience. It is important to know that while this does happen it is very rare. Group work is powerful and can stir up a lot of feelings. It is advisable to be in individual therapy alongside group work. In my experience at the institute, faculty are very careful to respect boundaries and not to push participants beyond their comfort. It is true that historically some Gestalt therapists, including Fritz Perls, were not so careful about respecting client resistances. Today, the culture at the institute is much more careful. Faculty will often step in to check with participants about their level of comfort and need for support and whether they wish to proceed. On rare occasions, where needed, I have also seen them step in to protect people if others are pushing too far or projecting onto them. However, it is obviously impossible for faculty to police everything that participants say to each other in group. Also, the work is often deeply personal and so can be painful or create feelings of vulnerability. For instance, some individuals may feel injured when their need to project onto others is interrupted by faculty who need to balance their need with the need of other participants to feel safe. Gestalt faculty have varied backgrounds - they may be psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, coaches, phd's, professors or work primarily with organizations. All have, in addition, gone through extensive Gestalt training. Faculty at the institute bring broad and deep training and experience in many areas. I have a PhD in psychology, twenty years of experience doing psychology and neuroscience research, I am a board certified coach with training from another coaching center, and I am a tenured professor who gets very good teaching reviews. I have a great deal of respect for Gestalt Institute faculty from what I have seen about how they operate. I know many other professionals feel the same way about the institute. It is an internationally recognized center - people come to it from across the USA and even abroad. It is a wonderful local resource for Cleveland. I strongly recommend that you take the opportunity to try out a workshop. It isn't for everyone, but it is absolutely transformative for many. Who would want to pass up on the chance to positively transform their life and relationships?

Today 3-28-26 it's my…read morewife's birthday so I have a eventful day planned and starting with a couple's massage. 11:00 appointment and I'm there ten minutes before my appointment. Jay the manager didn't handle our situation professionally. One of the masseuse didn't show up but her fault but they knew this prior to us arriving. They let us sit and wait without telling us, we over heard the my people talking then about fifteen minutes past they tell us she's a no call no show. This really messing up my plans. The manager Jay should have said that coming through the door. She only suggested one of us get a massage. She being a manger I sure this isn't the first time happening. You always have a back up on deck to cover a no call no show. I'm a manager myself. So she should have stepped in and did the massage herself but she said she couldn't. A new student walked in for her first day. Today would have been a great day for Jay to put her to work and assist her day one. I bought the package deal she could have offered an certificate the there's nothing I can do was unacceptable!!! I'm upset because this messed up the surprise I had planned.
