I booked this house for myself & some friends for a long weekend in May 2007. First impressions are…read morethat it is huge with plenty of space for a large group but it could do with a bit of TLC. There are 7 bedrooms over the first and second floors - one being a bunk room but all the others are doubles/twins with plenty of room. Our party comprised of 7 adults, 1 child and 2 infants and the house had rooms to spare. The property is available for smaller groups who do not occupy the second floor but even though we did take the whole property it was still well priced when split between 7 adults. This property was booked directly with the owner (presumed) who lives elsewhere. The website is comprehensive and is a good representation of the house. The house is located in the little village of Morthoe on the outskirts of Woolacombe. There is just one parking space infront of the property and the rest of us parked in the public car park - approx 5 min walk and very reasonably priced. The village has some pubs and shops that provide the essentials. Woolacombe is a short drive away - you could probably walk it but if you have kids and beach equipment driving is the better option. The house is well layed out with a huge lounge/diner that includes a full sized pool table and piano. There is a utility/boot room, which contains lots of useful beach equipment and a wc to the rear. The kitchen is almost industrial with plenty of crockery, pans, etc - it easily caters for the occupants even if full of adults. There is also a games room on the top floor with table football and air hockey. It is well situated for coastal walks and we played a local golf course which is just a 5 minute drive away (also reviewed). Overall, this place feels a bit like a hostel rather than home. However, it is very well priced for a nice break close to the large fantastic beach in Woolacombe.

Unfortunately, I was assigned a room overlooking the parking lot dumpsters with a non-functional heater. Despite reporting the cold radiator, the staff simply told me to turn the dial up--which I had already done to no avail. The dining experience was also a letdown. While the presentation was an attempt at "Michelin-style," the £10 mullet portion was tiny and swimming in excessive herb oil, which was difficult to stomach after a long day of travel. On a positive note, the breakfasts were good, the location is convenient, and it served as a helpful meeting point for my family. If you stay here, I recommend double-checking that any special requests are actually communicated to the staff.

Lovely outside eating area in nice weather, almost on the edge of the cliff. Bar and cafe open to non residents. Limited menu but adequate. Serving stuff decorated with a small pile of salad on large wood platters with chips in a little bucket is a bit weird. I felt like asking for a plate! No wonder there are so many birds hanging about watching closely! Anyway, it was quite nice and reasonably priced and the view is lovely.

When they told me what room I was going in and it was all male....I was like nah! The were prompt to change and gave me an all female room. The did say keep bedrooms clean, so you knew you wasn't going to get a cleaner every day to change your bedding hence why I saw long stringy hair in my bunk bed that I had to pick off. I enjoyed the breakfast especially a paticular Peanut Butter I was raving to the owner about. It was from Costco! Obviously you get all sort of people- but mainly a young crowd. The have a cute small living room with plenty of choice if you wanted to watch a DVD! Also coming into the entrance of Riverhouse their are lots of information on what to do in Cardiff and the rest of Wales. I love the fact Riverhouse is near the River Taff and really close to the city centre . It was a pleasent stay overall.

Because it is hands down the cleanest hostel I've ever experienced. It feels like you're staying in someone's family home, only you are an incredibly welcome guest, rather than a paying customer. The fact that it's run by a brother and sister team may have something to do with it. The building is warm with modern bathrooms and showers, and plenty of them. The rooms have comfy beds, block out curtains and proper doonas, so there's no shivering under a sheet. There's free breakfast each day and it's an excellent spread; toast with every topping you could wish for, cereal, pastries, yoghurt, juice, and endless cups of tea and coffee. And the location couldn't be better. Right on the water, each window looks out at Millennium Stadium, so the city centre is just over the bridge.

Luckily, they had a private room left, which my boyfriend and I slept in and I have to say, I was quite impressed! The guy who let us in and showed us to our room was really friendly and the room itself was bright and spacious, with an exceptionally comfortable four poster double bed. There is no curfew, so you can wander in and out as you please, and you can park your car just outside for a couple of quid. I didn't get the chance to meet many people, but that's because we only spent the one night here and didn't make much of an effort to socialise, as we arrived late and were knackered. Would recommend staying here though, as it's great value for money.

The staff is extremely friendly and very willing to make enquiries/bookings for you. The rooms are small, but clean. Food is good, and there's a nice common area to relax in. Perfect for a rainy Welsh day. If you're into hiking, there are a bunch of tracks that start right from the hostel. If you have a car, that's no issue as there is a lot right on site. Definitely one of the better hostels I've stayed at.
